Yes, a betta may nibble or swallow duckweed, but that does not make duckweed a suitable staple food. Bettas are described as eating insects and other invertebrates in the wild and doing best on a varied diet in captivity. Whether regularly eating intact duckweed is safe or nutritionally adequate has not been established by the sources cited here.
Will a betta eat duckweed?
Some bettas may bite floating duckweed or swallow a piece, but the available sources do not establish how often pet bettas do this or whether it is a consistent behavior. If you see your fish take a bite, that observation alone does not show that duckweed is an important part of its diet.

It is useful to distinguish an occasional bite from a food plan. Aqueon’s care guide says bettas eat insects and other invertebrates in the wild and do best on a varied diet. That is husbandry guidance, not a controlled test of duckweed.
Is duckweed safe for bettas?
The sources reviewed do not settle whether repeated consumption of intact aquarium duckweed is safe, harmful, or nutritionally complete. A bite is not, by itself, evidence of poisoning, but there is also not enough evidence to say that unlimited or regular consumption is harmless. Do not rely on duckweed as your betta’s food source.

- BETTA FORMULATION: Nutritionally balanced diet is an ideal daily staple food for your Siamese fighting fish (betta splendens) and other top-water feeding tropical fish.
- FOR DAILY FEEDING: Premium diet high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids for energy and growth.
- COLOR ENHANCING: Includes natural color enhancers to promote the development of rich, beautiful coloration in your betta fish.
- FLOATING CRISPS: Blend of tiny, colorful floating crisps for top-water feeders.

If your betta appears ill or remains bloated, do not assume duckweed is the cause. The cited guidance does not provide a duckweed-specific diagnosis; seek advice from an aquatic veterinarian.
Why duckweed feed studies do not answer the aquarium question
| Use or study | What it involved | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Whole duckweed in an aquarium | Intact living plants floating in a home tank. | The cited sources do not provide a direct trial establishing how often bettas eat it, whether it is digestible, or whether it is safe or complete as a regular diet. |
| Wolffia arrhiza in formulated feed | A 2021 paper studied duckweed as a soybean-meal substitute in formulated Siamese fighting fish diets. | It shows that duckweed has been studied as a processed feed ingredient. It does not establish that bettas can thrive on intact leaves or how much live duckweed is safe. |
| Plankton and formulated diets | A 2016, 49-day open-pond study compared formulated food, plankton, and a mixed diet for Betta splendens. | The mixed-diet treatment had the highest reported specific growth rate, weight gain, and final weight among the tested diets, with 82% survival. It did not test intact duckweed and should not be generalized to home aquaria. |
The 2016 study also reported that gut contents in the mixed and plankton groups included Rotifera and Bacillariophyceae at high percentages—over 78% of total organisms. Those results describe that study’s fish, culture conditions, and diets; they are not a feeding recommendation for a household betta.

What to feed instead
Offer a suitable betta-specific prepared food as part of an appropriate, varied diet rather than expecting the fish to live on plants in its tank. Aqueon describes its betta food as a daily diet and floating pellet, but that is an example of a product category, not a required brand or an independently established best choice. Seriously Fish lists dried foods and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia, and chironomid larvae as options; this is a husbandry reference, not a controlled dietary trial.
