The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent. Native to South America, it is a social, plant-eating mammal whose life is closely tied to wetlands and other habitats with reliable access to water.

What is a capybara?

Capybaras are large rodents in the genus Hydrochoerus. Henry Vilas Zoo describes the species as the world’s largest rodent and places its range across much of South America. San Diego Zoo describes it as native to Central and South America. Henry Vilas Zoo’s capybara profile and San Diego Zoo’s animal profile provide these overview facts.

Where do capybaras live?

Capybaras are associated with wetlands and waterways. They use riverbanks, ponds, marshes, swamps, and humid grasslands, as well as some forested areas, provided water is accessible. Zoo Berlin describes habitats including humid grasslands, swamps, riverbanks, and forests in its capybara profile.

Water is more than a nearby feature of their habitat: capybaras swim, and San Diego Zoo describes water as a refuge from predators and a way to cool down. Zoo sources also discuss water’s role in skin health in managed care, but that husbandry context should not be mistaken for a complete description of wild behavior.

What do capybaras eat?

Capybaras are herbivores. Their diet is chiefly grasses and aquatic plants; Henry Vilas Zoo also mentions bark and fruit. What an individual eats varies with what is available in its habitat.

Zoo feeding details are specific to managed animals, not a home-feeding guide. For example, San Diego Zoo lists low-starch biscuits, greens, vegetables, and Bermuda grass hay as part of its own capybara diet. Those items describe that institution’s care and should not be generalized as a universal feeding prescription.

Are capybaras social?

Yes. Capybaras commonly live in groups, but reported group sizes are descriptions, not a single fixed rule. Henry Vilas Zoo gives 10 to 20 as a typical group size. San Diego Zoo describes groups of about 10 and notes that larger aggregations may form in the wet season. These figures are zoo summaries of social behavior, not population estimates.

San Diego Zoo reports a range of vocalizations, including barks, chirps, whistles, huffs, and purrs. Communication and group living are part of how these animals interact; neither means that an individual capybara is automatically suited to life as a household pet.

Are capybaras endangered?

The zoo sources consulted describe capybaras as not endangered or as least concern. Henry Vilas Zoo reports the species as least concern, while San Diego Zoo says it is not currently classified as endangered. These are zoo-page descriptions, not a substitute for checking a current assessment by the relevant conservation authority.

A broad status label does not mean the species faces no pressures. San Diego Zoo identifies deforestation, habitat destruction, and illegal poaching as threats; Taronga Zoo also names habitat loss as a major environmental threat. Conservation status and local pressures answer different questions: a species may not be classified as endangered while still facing threats in particular places.

Can you keep a capybara as a pet?

Whether private ownership is legal depends on the jurisdiction, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal answer. The AZA-associated 2021 Capybara Care Manual is professional animal-care guidance; it is not evidence that capybaras are suitable household pets or a do-it-yourself care plan. Anyone considering ownership would need to verify current local law and consult qualified specialists about welfare and veterinary requirements.
