In autumn, animals respond to shorter days, cooler weather and changing food supplies in different ways. Some move to warmer places, some gather food or find shelter, and others breed or spawn. There is no single autumn routine: what an animal does depends on its species and where it lives.

What do animals do in autumn?

Autumn can bring several kinds of change at once. Animals may travel, prepare food, seek shelter, remain active or reproduce. These behaviors are connected to the conditions in a particular habitat, not a checklist every animal follows.

  • Movement: Some animals migrate; others stay in their home range.
  • Food: Some cache food for later, while others rely on energy reserves or whatever remains available.
  • Winter conditions: Animals may keep moving, shelter, enter torpor or hibernate, depending on the species.
  • Reproduction: For some animals, autumn is a breeding or spawning season.

Examples below are from Britain, so the species and timing may differ elsewhere. BBC Earth’s Britain’s busiest autumn animals describes these seasonal behaviors.

How do animals get ready for winter?

Some migrate

Migration moves an animal away from a place where seasonal conditions have changed. Birds are among the familiar examples: some leave for areas with more favorable conditions, while other birds remain. Which species move, and when, varies by region.

Some store food

In Britain, grey squirrels bury nuts and jays cache acorns. Hiding food can help animals make use of food that is plentiful in autumn when it is harder to find later. These are examples of food caching, not a behavior shared by every animal.

Some shelter or slow down

Insects and butterflies may survive cold conditions by finding shelter or entering torpor, a period of reduced activity. Torpor is not another word for hibernation, and not every animal that becomes less active in winter is hibernating. The specific behavior depends on the species.

Some stay active

Autumn does not mean that all wildlife disappears or becomes inactive. Animals that remain in an area may continue to search for food or use sheltered places as conditions change. A species’ response depends on its needs and local habitat.

Why are some animals breeding in autumn?

Preparing for winter is not the only seasonal purpose. In Britain, BBC Earth describes red deer rutting, grey seals giving birth, and salmon and sea trout spawning in autumn. These examples show why autumn behavior cannot be reduced to migration or winter rest: for some animals, it is also a time for reproduction.

How to observe autumn wildlife with children

Watching from a respectful distance can help children notice seasonal changes without disturbing animals. Scholastic’s November 2025 Let’s Find Out issue on autumn animals lists squirrel-watching as a hands-on activity and focuses on how animals adapt to seasonal change.

  1. Choose a familiar outdoor place. A garden, park or nearby path makes it easier to return and compare what you see.
  2. Look and listen quietly. Notice which animals are present, what they are doing and where they find food or shelter.
  3. Record observations. A few notes or drawings can capture the date, weather, animal and behavior. Special equipment is not necessary.
  4. Compare visits. Ask whether the same animals are still around, whether food sources have changed and whether you can spot new signs of activity.
  5. Leave wildlife undisturbed. Watch from a distance and do not handle animals or interfere with nests, shelters or food stores.

Why autumn wildlife differs by place

“Autumn” describes a seasonal transition, but the weather, food supply and habitats an animal encounters are local. A British squirrel caching nuts is a useful example, not a rule for squirrels everywhere; the same is true of the British deer, seal and fish behaviors described above. For a child-friendly introduction to seasonal animal behavior, see National Geographic Kids’ Autumn Animals feature.
