Move quietly, never chase or restrain a cat, leave sleeping and eating animals alone, and follow the particular café’s instructions even when they differ from another venue’s rules.
Cat cafés are not governed by one universal etiquette code. Age limits, food policies, photography rules, access arrangements, and staff procedures vary. Check the café’s current information before booking, then treat the orientation and signs on arrival as the authority for that visit.

The essential rules at a glance
- Allow voluntary contact. A cat may approach for a stroke, or may prefer to watch from a distance. Both choices are normal.
- Never chase, corner, grab, pick up, pin down, or hold a cat in place. If it walks away, the interaction is over.
- Do not disturb basic activities. Leave cats that are sleeping, eating, drinking, grooming, or using a litter area alone.
- Keep the room calm. Walk rather than run, use a quiet voice, and avoid rough or startling play.
- Ask before feeding or bringing anything in. Treats, supplements, outside food, and toys may be prohibited.
- Use photography sparingly. Do not use flash or interfere with cats, staff, or other visitors.
- Follow staff directions immediately. Staff can ask you to stop touching a particular cat or leave an area for welfare or safety reasons.
Before you book: learn that café’s rules
Do not assume a second location, a different branch, or a café in another country follows the same policy. Read the current visitor information and booking conditions for the exact venue and session. Look for:

- minimum ages, age-banded sessions, and whether an adult must accompany children;
- how the cat room is accessed, including timed entry, queues, stairs, or other accessibility details;
- whether food and drinks are allowed in the cat area or only in a separate human dining space;
- rules for treats, supplements, toys, and other objects brought from outside;
- photography, video, livestreaming, and professional-content restrictions;
- what happens if a visitor is scratched, bitten, falls, or cannot follow the rules; and
- cancellation, late-arrival, and other booking conditions.
Cat Cafe UK, for example, publishes age-specific sessions and branch-specific access information. Cat Café Melbourne requires guests to comply with staff instructions. Those examples demonstrate why a rule from one venue cannot be presented as a universal standard.

Entering the cat room
Listen to the briefing
Pay attention to the orientation, read signs, and ask a staff member about anything unclear before you touch a cat. The briefing may identify cats that need space, restricted rooms, permitted seating, hand-washing arrangements, or a temporary change in routine. A rule that seems inconvenient is usually easier to follow than to undo after a cat or visitor has been frightened.
Keep entrances and restricted areas clear
Enter and close doors as instructed so cats cannot slip through. Do not open gates, cupboards, carriers, or doors marked staff-only. At Cat Café Melbourne, guests are told to keep out of closed or staff-only areas and to keep outside food and drinks out of the cat space. Other cafés may have different arrangements, so use the local signs and staff directions rather than copying a remembered policy.
Settle your own behavior first
Put bags, coats, drinks, and phones where the café permits. Walk slowly, keep your voice low, and make space at doorways and narrow paths. A crowded entrance can be stressful even before anyone attempts to pet a cat.

How to approach a cat without taking control
Let the cat close the distance
Stand or sit quietly and allow the cat to investigate. You can offer a relaxed hand at the cat’s level, without reaching over its head or blocking its route, and wait. If it sniffs and remains nearby, a brief stroke may be welcome. If it turns away, hides, freezes, or walks off, let it go.
The EU Platform on Animal Welfare’s Responsible Cat Breeding Guidelines, endorsed 3 November 2020, states: “Do not force cats to interact; they should be able to move away from people if they choose to do so.” The document is breeding guidance rather than café regulation, but its principle is directly useful to visitors: interaction should be friendly, predictable, and under the cat’s control.
Use short, low-pressure contact
Begin with one or two gentle strokes in areas the cat accepts, commonly the cheeks, chin, or shoulders. Pause and see whether the cat remains engaged. Do not assume that a cat’s approach grants permission to touch every part of its body. Keep your hand away from the tail, paws, belly, and ears unless the cat clearly invites contact and staff say it is appropriate.

Stop at the first clear request for space
Turning the head away, moving away, hiding, crouching, flattening the ears, rapid tail movement, hissing, growling, swatting, or sudden tension are reasons to stop and give distance. Cats can show stress subtly, and a quiet or apparently sleepy cat is not automatically inviting touch. SPCA New Zealand cautions that stress can be masked by behavior that looks like sleep. Do not try to diagnose an individual cat from one sign; simply respect distance and ask staff if you are uncertain.
When not to touch
Leave a cat completely undisturbed when it is:
- sleeping or resting in a retreat;
- eating or drinking;
- using, approaching, or leaving a litter area;
- being handled by staff or receiving care;
- hiding, avoiding people, or showing signs of tension; or
- in a space marked unavailable.
Never follow a cat into a hiding place, reach under furniture, block an exit, or recruit another visitor to surround it. A retreat is a safety resource, not an invitation to coax the cat out for a photograph.
Handling: petting is not permission to pick up
Most visitor injuries and frightened-cat encounters are easier to prevent than to resolve. Do not lift, carry, restrain, hug, sit on, hold down, or pass a cat between people. Do not wake a cat for a cuddle or pose it for a picture. Even a cat that enjoys stroking may dislike being lifted, and café staff may have medical, behavioral, or welfare reasons for prohibiting handling.
If a cat climbs onto your lap, stay still and let it leave on its own. Do not trap it with your arms or prevent it from jumping down. If staff ask you to end contact, do so immediately, even if the cat appears relaxed.
Keeping the room calm
Move and speak gently
Running, shouting, squealing, rough play, and sudden gestures can frighten cats and other visitors. Keep walkways clear, avoid waving objects near faces, and do not clap or make noises to attract a cat. If you are excited, lower your voice rather than asking the cat to tolerate louder behavior.

Play is appropriate only when the café provides an approved toy and the cat is willing to participate. Move the toy away from the cat rather than chasing the cat itself. Stop when the cat loses interest, becomes overstimulated, or leaves. Never use fingers, clothing, visitors’ belongings, or food as improvised toys.

Food, treats, supplements, and toys
Ask before bringing or offering anything. A visitor’s treat can conflict with a cat’s diet, medication, allergy management, feeding schedule, or training plan. Outside items can also create competition or arguments between cats.
Cat Café Melbourne prohibits outside cat food, treats, supplements, and toys. Cat Café Budapest’s guidance says not to feed the cats. These are venue-specific examples, not a universal rule in the opposite direction: another café may provide approved treats under staff supervision. Unless a staff member gives explicit permission and instructions, keep food and toys out of the cat area and do not share anything from your own meal.
Never leave an item behind for cats to find. If a permitted toy breaks, becomes wet, or is taken into a restricted area, tell staff rather than retrieving it yourself.
Photography, video, and phones
Turn off flash. Bright bursts can startle cats, especially in a confined room, and a cat’s welfare takes priority over a better-lit image. Hold the phone quietly, avoid chasing a subject from one corner to another, and stop if the cat moves away.
Check the café’s policy before recording video, livestreaming, using a tripod, or creating professional or commercial content. Do not film other visitors without their permission, block staff, occupy a popular perch, or continue recording after staff ask you to stop. Some venues may limit photography more tightly than others; their current policy controls.
Children and family visits
Check the exact age and supervision requirements
There is no single café-wide minimum age. Cat Cafe UK uses age-banded sessions, while Cat Café Melbourne requires close adult supervision for admitted children. Confirm the rule for the venue and time you are booking, including whether every child needs an accompanying adult and whether younger children are admitted at all.

Prepare children before arrival
Explain that cats are living animals, not toys or photo props. Practice the key rules beforehand: walk, use a quiet voice, wait for a cat to approach, stroke gently, and stop when the cat moves away. Make clear that chasing, grabbing, yelling, waking, feeding, and forcing contact are never acceptable.

Supervise continuously
An adult should remain close enough to intervene immediately, not watch from a distant table. If a child cannot follow the rules, take the child out of the cat room and ask staff what to do. Do not expect a cat to teach a child through a scratch or bite.
Hygiene and health-conscious behavior
Use the hand-washing or sanitizing stations as directed, especially before and after visiting the cat area or handling food. Keep personal food and drinks in permitted zones, and do not share human food with cats. Avoid touching your face after petting until you have cleaned your hands.
The APHA Cat Group’s November 2025 guidance identifies unfamiliar handling, social dynamics, competition for resources, and disease transmission as risks in public group housing. It discusses measures such as biosecurity, vaccination protocols, and veterinary screening. A visitor usually cannot assess clinical standards during a short visit, so follow the venue’s hygiene instructions and do not enter restricted care areas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.If a cat appears distressed
Stop touching, create space, and alert staff rather than trying to solve the situation yourself. Do not corner the cat, punish it, or encourage other guests to watch. Staff may move the cat, close an area, or end an interaction.
SPCA New Zealand notes that many domestic cats may not cope well with confined spaces and groups. It says changing populations can increase stress and infectious-disease risk and that cafés should provide places where cats can escape people and other environmental stressors. Stress can be subtle and overlooked, so a visitor’s most helpful response is restraint: allow retreat and defer to trained staff.

If a visitor is scratched, bitten, or injured
Move away calmly and notify staff immediately. Do not conceal an injury, attempt to restrain the cat, or provide your own treatment in the cat room. Follow the café’s incident instructions and seek medical advice when appropriate.
Cat Café Melbourne’s house rules ask guests to report bites, scratches, falls, and other incidents at once and give staff authority to end an interaction or visit for welfare or safety reasons. That is Melbourne’s stated procedure, not a universal protocol; other venues may direct you differently. In every café, prompt reporting gives staff the best chance to protect the person, the cat, and other guests.
How to judge a café’s visitor-facing welfare practices
A pleasant interior or friendly visit does not prove that every welfare concern has been addressed. If you are choosing between venues, use observable questions rather than rating a café from photographs or marketing copy alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| What to check | Why it matters | What evidence may be visible |
|---|---|---|
| Retreat and escape options | Cats need ways to move away from people and environmental pressure. | Elevated spaces, separate rooms, covered retreats, or staff-enforced no-entry areas. |
| Interaction enforcement | Rules help only when someone protects a cat that needs space. | Clear orientation, visible signs, and staff who interrupt chasing or unwanted handling. |
| Food and toy controls | Unplanned feeding and objects can create dietary, behavioral, or conflict risks. | Designated feeding procedures and a clear policy on outside treats and toys. |
| Health and hygiene information | Group environments require attention to infection control and routine care. | Published hygiene instructions and accessible information about relevant health procedures; do not infer clinical quality from a brief visit. |
| Age, access, and photo rules | Predictable visitor behavior reduces disruption and improves safety. | Current, branch-specific details before booking. |
The APHA Cat Group and SPCA New Zealand describe welfare and health challenges that can arise in group café environments; they do not establish that every café has the same problems. If a venue offers no meaningful retreat, tolerates repeated forced handling, or cannot explain basic visitor controls, you can choose not to enter and raise your concerns with management or an appropriate animal-welfare authority.
Why welfare concerns deserve proportionate attention
Cat cafés can give people an opportunity to observe cats, but the setting also combines unfamiliar people, repeated handling, changing groups, limited space, and shared resources. SPCA New Zealand says many cats may not cope well with confinement and groups and emphasizes escape areas. The APHA Cat Group’s November 2025 guidance discusses stress from unfamiliar people and handling, social competition, and disease transmission, alongside management measures such as biosecurity, vaccination, and veterinary screening.
These concerns do not justify claiming that all cat cafés are harmful, nor does one pleasant visit establish that a venue’s welfare program is comprehensive. Visitors can make a real difference by reducing pressure on individual cats, following staff directions, and supporting cafés that make retreat, health, and responsible handling visible priorities.
A simple visit sequence
- Before booking: read the exact venue’s age, access, food, toy, photo, and incident rules.
- On arrival: listen to staff, wash or sanitize as directed, and keep food and drinks in permitted areas.
- In the room: walk, speak softly, and observe before approaching any cat.
- During contact: let the cat close the distance, use gentle brief strokes, and pause often.
- When the cat leaves: stop immediately and do not follow, call, or block its route.
- At any warning sign: create space and ask staff for help.
- Before leaving: report any injury, damaged item, or welfare concern and follow the café’s exit instructions.
Good etiquette is not about making every cat available for petting. It is about making the cat’s choice easy, keeping the environment predictable, and accepting that observation from a respectful distance may be the best interaction of the day.
