Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA cat making chewing motions with an apparently empty mouth while purring may be showing a brief, harmless behavior, but the motion and purring alone cannot identify its cause. Oral or dental discomfort is one possibility; persistent chewing can also involve stress, boredom, or pica if the cat is actually chewing and swallowing nonfood material. Watch for accompanying signs and arrange veterinary advice for new, recurring, or persistent behavior.
What does chewing on nothing while purring mean?
It is a sign, not a diagnosis. Purring does not by itself prove that a cat is comfortable, and jaw movements alone cannot distinguish a benign habit from mouth discomfort or another problem.

A brief episode while a cat watches a bird or other potential prey may be chattering; a vet-reviewed Catster article also mentions short-lived habitual behavior as a possible explanation. Context can help a veterinarian interpret what you see, but it cannot confirm the cause. Catster’s discussion of the behavior presents these as possibilities, not a diagnosis.

Could a mouth or tooth problem cause the motion?
Yes. Oral inflammation, injuries, foreign objects, and tumors are among the problems that can affect a cat’s mouth, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual. A cat with oral disease may drool, have bad breath, paw at the mouth, resist an examination, or lose interest in food. Some oral pain is not obvious at home.

Tooth resorption can be hard to spot
Tooth resorption is a painful condition that may change the way a cat chews. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine estimates it affects 20% to 60% of all cats and close to three-quarters of cats five years of age and older; the publication year is not stated on its page. These population estimates do not indicate whether an individual cat has the condition.
Affected cats may tilt their head or chew on one side, and they may continue eating despite the problem. As Cornell’s former chief of dentistry and oral surgery Jennifer Rawlinson, DVM, explains: “The owner may notice that the animal’s appetite appears to be normal but that it tilts its head and tries to chew on just one side of its mouth.” An intraoral full-mouth radiograph is the best confirmation method described by Cornell’s tooth-resorption guide; a veterinarian can decide whether an oral exam or further assessment is appropriate.

Is it pica, or only an empty-mouth motion?
Those are different observations. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine defines pica as persistent chewing and consumption of nonnutritional substances that provide no physical benefit. A cat that appears to chew air, without chewing or swallowing anything, does not meet that definition based on the motion alone.

When a cat does eat nonfood material, possible contributors include anxiety, boredom or inadequate enrichment, compulsive behavior, early weaning, nutritional deficiency, and other medical problems. An indigestible object can injure the mouth, cause poisoning, or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. VCA’s pica guidance describes the risks and the need to consider medical causes.

What should you observe at home?
Make a short record of the episodes to help your veterinarian assess the pattern:
- When the behavior started, how often it occurs, and how long each episode lasts.
- What happened just beforehand, such as seeing a bird, eating, or playing.
- Whether the cat is chewing or swallowing an actual object, and what the object is.
- Any accompanying changes, including drooling, bad breath, appetite changes, vomiting, or unusual weakness.
UC Davis recommends careful observation and notes that video can capture behavior. If it is safe to do so, record an episode to show the veterinarian; do not delay care to get a video if your cat seems unwell.

When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange an assessment if the behavior is new, recurring, or persistent, particularly if your cat drools, has bad breath, paws at the mouth, resists having the mouth examined, chews on one side, drops food, avoids food, or has difficulty swallowing. Vomiting, weakness, or other signs of illness also warrant prompt veterinary advice. There is no universal time threshold established for this specific behavior.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you suspect your cat swallowed string or another foreign object, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than waiting to see whether the motion stops. Keep string, thread, plastic, and other dangerous items out of reach. Oral disease may be difficult to assess at home, and Merck notes that pain can make examination difficult; sedation may be needed for a complete oral exam.

Can enrichment help?
When a veterinarian has considered medical causes, appropriate toys, stimulation, and exercise may be part of managing persistent nonfood chewing. UC Davis describes enrichment as a possible outlet for abnormal eating behavior, not a treatment for unexplained empty-mouth jaw movements. A toy should not substitute for an oral examination when pain or illness is possible.
