Ear discharge in a cat is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can result from ear mites, inflammation, allergies, a foreign object, or a bacterial or yeast infection—and more than one problem can be present at once. Because the color or smell of the debris cannot reliably identify its cause, arrange a veterinary examination rather than trying drops or home remedies.
Why does a cat have ear discharge?
Discharge often accompanies otitis externa, inflammation of the outer ear canal. Causes can include parasites, foreign material, or allergies; bacteria and yeast may also contribute, sometimes as secondary infections. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance, last updated in February 2026, describes these potential causes and signs.

Ear mites are another possibility, particularly in kittens and outdoor cats, but they cannot be confirmed by appearance alone. Mites may occur alongside a secondary infection. Less common but important explanations include polyps, tumors, and other underlying disease. Persistent blockage in one ear may need further investigation.
What do the color and other symptoms mean?
Discharge may look black, brown, or yellow, and it may have an odor. None of those features, by itself, establishes whether the cause is mites, bacteria, yeast, or another problem. Ear-mite signs and infection signs overlap, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

Other signs can include:
- Head shaking or repeated scratching
- Redness, swelling, or scaly skin around the ear
- Itching, tenderness, or pain
- More discharge than usual
- An unpleasant odor
One or both ears may be affected. Signs can start suddenly or persist over time; a one-sided problem that does not resolve can point to an obstruction or another structural cause that needs evaluation.
When should you take your cat to the vet?
Arrange a veterinary visit when you notice discharge, particularly if it persists or comes with odor, pain, redness, swelling, head shaking, or repeated scratching. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat seems markedly unwell or develops a head tilt or changes in balance. Deeper or untreated ear disease can affect hearing or balance, and the urgency depends on the cat’s overall condition and symptoms.

How will a veterinarian find the cause?
The veterinarian will consider your cat’s history and examine the ear. They may use an otoscope to inspect the canal and eardrum, and examine a sample of debris under a microscope for mites, bacteria, or yeast. If pain, blockage, or difficulty handling the cat prevents a useful examination, sedation or anesthesia may be needed.
Checking the eardrum matters: some medications can cause hearing loss if it is ruptured, VCA notes. That is one reason a treatment that helped another cat—or an over-the-counter product—may be unsafe for yours.

How is ear discharge treated?
Treatment depends on the diagnosed cause, how far the disease extends, and whether the eardrum can be safely assessed. A veterinarian may prescribe topical medication, parasite treatment for mites, or oral or injectable medication for more chronic or deeper disease. Cleaning may also be appropriate, but the product and method should be selected or directed by the veterinarian.
Follow the prescribed course and attend recommended rechecks. A reduction in discharge or scratching does not by itself confirm that the underlying problem has resolved. Persistent or recurring signs may prompt further investigation for a foreign body, polyp, tumor, or underlying disease.

What should you avoid doing at home?
- Do not probe the ear canal. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises against probing an itchy cat’s ears; a visual check is safer. See Cornell’s guidance on feline ear disorders.
- Do not put hydrogen peroxide or vinegar in the ear. The MSD Veterinary Manual says these can irritate an inflamed canal and increase secretions.
- Do not use unapproved drops, cleaners, or mite treatments. Medication choice depends on the cause and eardrum status.
Healthy cats generally do not need routine ear cleaning unless a veterinarian advises it. For an affected ear, use only the cleaning product and method your veterinarian recommends.
