Color boundaries overlap, and lighting can change how an eye appears. A kitten’s eyes may also change as pigment develops; a new change in an adult cat’s eyes is different and warrants veterinary attention.
Are there exactly seven cat eye colors?
No universally accepted list establishes exactly seven eye-color categories for every cat. The names below group common descriptions into a useful visual guide. Some sources treat yellow and gold as separate colors; others use them interchangeably. Hazel and blue-green also appear in descriptions, while breed registries may use color terms in specific breed or genetic contexts rather than as a general palette for all cats. The International Cat Association’s Uniform Color Descriptions, Version B is registry terminology, not a universal seven-color chart.

Color depends partly on the amount and type of melanin in the iris. Blue eyes do not have blue pigment: limited pigment and the way light scatters through the eye make them look blue. Lighting and viewing angle can also affect how a shade appears.

Seven common ways to describe a cat’s eyes
-
Blue
A cool-looking eye color associated with relatively little iris pigment. Its blue appearance comes from light scattering, not blue pigment in the iris.

Why do kittens’ eyes change color?
Young kittens often appear to have blue eyes because there is little pigment in the iris early in development. As melanin develops and becomes distributed through the iris, the eyes may shift toward their later color. A veterinarian-reviewed Catster article says this change is usually complete by about three months of age; that is an approximate guide, not a deadline or guarantee for every kitten. See Catster’s explanation of kitten and adult eye-color changes.
What does it mean if a cat has two different eye colors?
Different-colored irises are called complete heterochromia; “odd-eyed” is a common everyday term. Sectoral heterochromia describes one iris with distinct differently colored regions. A naturally present difference in eye color does not, by itself, show that a cat has impaired sight. Cats Protection describes these forms of heterochromia in its guide to why cats have different-colored eyes.

White cats with blue eyes have a higher risk of congenital deafness, but eye color does not determine whether an individual cat can hear. Not every blue-eyed or odd-eyed white cat is deaf. If you have concerns about a cat’s hearing, a veterinarian can assess them.
When should an eye-color change concern you?
A kitten’s gradual color development is different from a new change in a mature cat. Contact a veterinarian promptly if an adult cat’s eye changes suddenly or if you notice an accompanying sign such as cloudiness, redness, squinting, discomfort, sensitivity to light, rubbing, an unusual pupil shape, or a protruding third eyelid. Eye color alone cannot identify the cause, so seek professional assessment rather than trying to diagnose the problem from a color chart. Cats Protection advises veterinary attention for sudden or later eye-color changes; Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article also lists signs that may accompany eye problems.
