Battersea adoption starts with online registration and matching, not an application for one specific dog. Find out what to expect, what it costs and how to prepare.

To adopt a dog from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, register online, share accurate details about your household and preferences, and wait for the rehoming team to identify a suitable match. Registration is not an application for a particular dog: Battersea assesses each dog individually and may suggest a different dog from one you first noticed online.

How Battersea’s dog adoption process works

Battersea describes adoption as a matching process rather than a first-come-first-served claim on a listed dog. It compares the information in your registration with what it has learned about each dog, including the kind of home that dog needs. Its rehoming process guide says registration is a way to express interest in rehoming, not to apply for a specific animal.

  1. Register online. Complete Battersea’s dog rehoming registration form with honest details about your circumstances, household and preferences. The team uses this information to look for possible matches.
  2. Wait for a match. Matching can take time. Battersea says it will contact you and offer guidance if it has not found a match within three months.
  3. Talk with the rehoming team. If a potential match is identified, a team member will arrange a conversation to discuss further details.
  4. Visit to meet the dog. Battersea will arrange a visit to a centre so you can meet the potential match. The registration form asks that you and your household be able to visit at short notice.

Your existing pets can affect which dogs may suit your home. Battersea notes that some dogs do best as the only pet, so a suitable match may take longer or may not be possible. Be open about the animals already in your household when you register.

Are you ready to register?

Battersea’s online registration form, accessed on 7 October 2026, asks prospective adopters to confirm several practical commitments. These are Battersea’s current stated expectations, not universal rules for every rescue organisation.

  • You have permission to keep a dog in your home.
  • You have considered the time, effort and cost of dog ownership.
  • The dog will not be left alone at home for more than eight hours a day.
  • You can welcome a dog within seven days of being matched.
  • All household members can visit a Battersea centre at a few days’ notice.
  • You do not expect a major change in the next three months, such as moving home, welcoming a child or taking a long holiday.

The form also says to be ready to rehome immediately from the date you submit it. Consider whether your schedule, home and household can meet those commitments before registering.

What does it cost to adopt a Battersea dog?

Battersea’s dog rehoming FAQ, accessed on 7 October 2026, lists these adoption fees:

Dog adopted Published fee
Dog over six months old £230
Puppy under six months old £275
Pair of dogs £350

The published fee includes microchipping, initial vaccinations, flea and worming treatment, neutering, a collar, identification tag and lead, plus a starter food pack, advice and special offers. Battersea also lists four weeks of free Petplan insurance while the dog settles in. Fees and package details can change; check the current dog rehoming FAQ before you register.

The adoption fee is only part of the cost of caring for a dog. Battersea advises prospective owners to budget for ongoing expenses such as food, insurance, grooming and local veterinary care.

Will Battersea check your home or rental permission?

Depending on your circumstances and the dog being considered, Battersea may ask you to provide photos or videos of your home or garden. For example, it may want to check whether a garden is suitable for an energetic dog. This is not described as a requirement in every case.

If you rent, Battersea may ask for written confirmation from your landlord or housing authority that pets are allowed. Check your tenancy or housing rules and be ready to provide permission if requested.

If you mean giving your own dog to Battersea

Giving up a dog is a separate process from adopting one. Owners should use Battersea’s guidance for giving up a dog, which directs them to an intake form asking for detailed information about the dog’s behaviour, health and circumstances. Give accurate information so the team can understand the dog’s needs.

Battersea says it is experiencing high demand and may put owners on a waiting list while it manages space and urgent cases. It advises contacting several rehoming centres for help as soon as possible; do not assume Battersea can take a dog immediately. The guidance also points owners dealing with behaviour problems to its behaviour advice contact. If behaviour changes suddenly, arrange a veterinary assessment to rule out a medical problem or pain.
