If your cat may have eaten something hazardous, call a veterinarian promptly with the product label or a sample, the amount involved, and when it happened. Do not try to make your cat vomit or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional directs you.
What “food poisoning” can mean in cats
“Food poisoning” is a broad, everyday term, not a single diagnosis. It can refer to a toxic ingredient, an infection from contaminated food, or—less precisely—a stomach upset whose cause is still unknown. A veterinarian needs the suspected exposure and the cat’s condition to assess what is happening.

| Type of hazard | Examples | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Toxic ingredient | Grapes, raisins, onions, avocados, products containing xylitol, or chocolate | These foods or ingredients are identified as hazards for cats; the risk depends on the substance and exposure. Do not assume they have equal toxicity or that a symptom identifies which one was eaten. Cornell Feline Health Center |
| Foodborne pathogen | Raw or undercooked meat or eggs; raw pet food can carry bacteria such as Salmonella and Listeria | Contaminated food can cause infection. ASPCA also identifies Salmonella and E. coli as possible bacterial hazards in raw or undercooked meat and eggs. ASPCA · FDA |
| Physical hazard | Bones | Bones can injure or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. This is a physical injury risk, not poisoning or infection. ASPCA |
Signs to watch for—and when it is an emergency
Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhea, reduced appetite, lethargy, drooling, unsteady gait, difficulty breathing, seizures, and blood in the stool or urine. Other reported signs include bruising, nosebleeds, irregular heartbeat, or inability to urinate. Salmonella illness may involve fever, reduced activity, and sometimes bloody diarrhea. These signs are warnings, not a way to identify the cause; many illnesses can look similar. An infected pet may also shed Salmonella without obvious signs. Cornell on feline poisons · FDA on Salmonella
If your cat is struggling to breathe, having seizures, collapsing, very weak, or passing blood in stool or urine, seek emergency veterinary care now. Call a veterinary professional promptly for any suspected hazardous ingestion, even if your cat seems well: the time to illness varies by substance, and a serious problem may not be obvious at first. #1 Best Overall
- KILLS & REPELS ON CONTACT: Knock down an active flea and tick problem fast — this plant-powered spray kills fleas and ticks on contact and keeps repelling them on dogs, so you’re not waiting days for a pill or drop to take effect.
- PLANT-POWERED ESSENTIAL OILS: A working blend of cedarwood, rosemary, geranium, lemongrass, and thyme oils — a plant-powered alternative to harsh chemical collars, pills, and drops when used as directed.
- SAFE FOR PETS & FAMILY WHEN USED AS DIRECTED: Formulated without permethrin, and gentle enough for dogs, puppies, and senior dogs when diluted and used as directed. Always read the full label and spot-test a small area before full-body application.
- TREAT THE WHOLE HOME, NOT JUST YOUR PET: Fleas live in your carpets, not only on your animal — spray it on carpets, rugs, pet beds, furniture, floors, baseboards, and kennels to treat the environment, indoors and out, when used as directed.
- COMPLETE KIT, MAKES 32 OZ: Includes one 16 oz refillable spray bottle and two 3.7 oz concentrate bottles — just add water to make 32 oz of plant-powered flea and tick spray for dogs and home. Refill instead of rebuying, so a little goes a long way.
What to do if your cat may have eaten something hazardous
- Prevent further access. Move the food or substance out of reach. Keep its packaging, ingredient list, or a sample.
- Record the details. Note what your cat may have eaten, about how much, and when. Have your cat’s weight and current signs ready if known.
- Call a veterinarian immediately. If your regular clinic is unavailable, contact an emergency veterinary clinic or an animal poison-control service. Cornell lists U.S. poison-control resources on its common cat hazards page.
- Do not try a home treatment. Do not induce vomiting or give medication, food, milk, charcoal, or another remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you. Cornell warns against unsupervised vomiting induction; Merck notes that decontamination depends on the substance and the patient. Merck Veterinary Manual
How a veterinarian may treat food poisoning or toxic exposure
Treatment depends on what was eaten, how much may have been consumed, when the exposure occurred, and the cat’s condition. Veterinary care may aim to limit further absorption, support affected body systems, or use a specific antidote if one exists. Supportive treatment may address problems such as breathing or neurological signs, shock, fluid and electrolyte loss, heart complications, or pain. There is no single home protocol that is appropriate for every exposure. Merck Veterinary Manual, “Principles of Toxicosis Treatment in Animals”

In a U.S. FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine study covering October 2010 through July 2012, 15 of 196 raw pet-food samples tested positive for Salmonella and 32 of 196 tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Those results describe the samples tested in that study; they are not a current prevalence estimate for all raw pet food. FDA says raw pet food is more likely than other tested pet-food types to be contaminated with disease-causing bacteria. FDA study summary
