What a long-line lead is for
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home defines a long-line as “a long rope with a clip at the end that you can attach to your dog’s harness like you would a normal lead.” It provides more room to practise recall than a short lead while keeping a physical connection to your dog. Battersea’s guide describes it as a way to practise before off-lead freedom.

Choose a line you can manage
Battersea lists long-lines from 3 to 30 metres, but does not prescribe a universal starting length. Choose a length you can handle in the space available and a material and weight suited to your dog. Lighter fabric may suit smaller dogs; grippy material or heavy-duty webbing may be more appropriate for larger dogs. Consider whether a handle improves your grip and comfort. No single length or material is established as best for every dog.
Attach it to a harness
Clip the line to your dog’s harness rather than its collar. If the harness has both front and back attachment points, use the back point: Battersea and Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home’s recall guidance recommend it to help keep the line away from the dog’s feet and reduce tangling. Harness attachment is a safety measure, not a guarantee against injury if your dog reaches the end of the line.

How to handle the line
- Check and untangle it. Unravel the line and remove knots before clipping it on.
- Hold it in two hands. Use the hand nearer your dog to manage slack and the other to hold and gather the remaining line. Let line out or bring it in smoothly as needed.
- Keep slack loose and controlled. Do not wind the line around your hand. Gather excess loosely so it does not drag into a tangle or become difficult to manage.
- Slow your dog gradually. If you need to check their movement, grip and release the line near the dog rather than abruptly yanking its end.
- Watch the surroundings. Keep track of where the line is, how much slack is out, and whether it could catch on people or objects.
Build freedom gradually
Start by holding the line while you practise recall. As your dog becomes more responsive, allow more distance while continuing to manage the slack. Letting the line trail is a later step, for a suitable open area where it is less likely to catch or trip someone. Remove the line only when you are confident in your dog’s recall and the setting is appropriate. Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home also recommends gradual progression from a held line toward a trailing one.
Prevent tangles and hand injuries
A long-line can trip other people or catch on the environment. Too much slack can tangle, and a dog running to the end of a line that is not held securely can pull it through your hands and injure them. Use only as much line as the surroundings allow, stay attentive, and avoid sudden stops. If a tangle begins, try to stop your dog moving before you untangle the line. The guidance recommends a harness but does not establish that it eliminates risk.

If recall is not improving
If your dog’s recall progress stalls, Battersea recommends contacting a certified dog behaviourist. A long-line provides a way to practise; it does not replace tailored help when training is not progressing.
