Use a body condition score (BCS) chart as a screening guide—not a diagnosis. On the 9-point scale used in American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) feline guidance, 4–5 is ideal, 6–7 is overweight, and 8 or higher is obese. Look at your cat’s shape and gently feel the ribs; a veterinarian can confirm the score and advise on an appropriate target and plan.
How to check your cat against an obesity chart
A BCS assessment combines what you see with what you can feel. A number on the scale alone cannot show where fat is distributed or whether your cat has lost muscle.

- Look from above. An ideal-condition cat generally has a visible waist behind the ribs. A broad back or no visible waist can be a warning sign.
- Look from the side. Compare your cat’s outline with the chart. A rounded belly or obvious fat deposits may indicate excess body fat.
- Feel gently. You should generally be able to feel the ribs and spine without pressing hard. If they are difficult to feel, your cat may carry excess fat.
- Consider the whole body. A hanging abdominal fold by itself does not establish obesity. Combine the visual checks with what you feel over the ribs and other areas.
These observations help you decide whether to ask for an assessment; they do not diagnose obesity. AAHA recommends using the 9-point scale consistently to record and communicate body condition. AAHA’s 2021 nutrition and weight-management guidance includes both visual and tactile assessment.

On this scale, 1 is very thin and 9 is the highest score. The commonly used AAHA feline categories are:

The body-fat and “percent overweight” figures are population-level correspondences in AAHA’s 2021 chart, not a calculation of an individual cat’s ideal weight or a feeding prescription. In its 2026 communication guide, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) describes scores 8–9 as the obesity range and says to consider whether excess fat affects health before applying the obesity term. The terminology differs at the boundary; use the chart’s stated convention and let a veterinarian interpret your cat’s score. APOP’s communication guide discusses this terminology.
Why a chart cannot tell you your cat’s ideal weight
There is no universally applicable ideal weight in pounds or kilograms for cats. A chart score describes body condition; it does not by itself account for an individual cat’s build, muscle condition, health, or weight history. A veterinarian can assess BCS alongside those factors and determine whether weight change is appropriate.

If your cat appears to be in an overweight or obesity range, ask the veterinary team to record BCS, muscle condition, and weight, and to set an individualized target and monitoring schedule. AAHA discusses calorie estimates based on ideal weight, with adjustments for the animal’s response and lifestyle. Do not use a general formula to impose a calorie cut without veterinary guidance. A veterinary weight-management diet may be one option to discuss with the care team.
What to do if your cat’s weight changes
A home scale can help track weight between veterinary visits, but it measures weight—not body condition or health. Use it as one monitoring tool alongside BCS and professional assessment, not as a substitute.

- If your cat seems heavier, arrange a veterinary assessment rather than setting a target from a chart alone.
- If your cat loses weight suddenly, contact a veterinarian. Unplanned weight loss can signal illness and should not automatically be treated as progress.
- Ask how often to recheck weight and body condition after a plan is set; the appropriate schedule depends on the individual cat.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s consumer guidance also advises owners to ask whether a pet is at a healthy weight and what weight is appropriate for that animal. FDA guidance on recognizing and managing obesity in pets includes that advice.

Charts can differ in scale and terminology. Before comparing a score, check whether the chart uses a 5-point or 9-point scale, how it defines the upper categories, and whether it includes instructions for feeling the ribs as well as illustrations. A visual match alone may not capture what a hands-on assessment can reveal.
