A cat may purr after giving birth while licking and nuzzling her kittens or settling with them in the nest. Purring alone does not show whether she is content, stressed, in pain, or ill. Check her appetite, energy, nursing, movement, breathing, discharge, and mammary glands; contact a veterinarian promptly if warning signs appear.
What purring after birth can mean
There is no reliable way to identify a queen’s state from purring alone. Cats Protection describes a mother cat “licking her newborn kittens, nuzzling them and purring” as normal maternal behavior in its After Birth guidance. A veterinary reproductive medicine reference also describes queens purring as they settle in the nest near the end of the first stage of labor. These are observed contexts, not a test of how an individual cat feels.

Rather than treating purring as one of seven proven causes, it is more accurate to consider several contexts that may overlap:
- Contact with her kittens: Purring may accompany licking and nuzzling as she cares for newborns.
- Settling in the nest: Purring has been described around nesting and birth.
- The nursing period: Purring can occur in the wider context of maternal care, but the available guidance does not establish that it triggers nursing or serves a specific nursing function.
- Another emotional or physical state: Purring does not rule out stress, discomfort, pain, or illness. By itself, it does not establish any of them.
How to judge whether mother and kittens are doing well
Look at the whole picture and how it changes. A purring mother who is attentive to her litter may still need care if she is unwell; conversely, purring alongside ordinary kitten care is not, by itself, a reason to assume something is wrong. Keep an eye on her appetite, energy, breathing, movement, nursing, vaginal discharge, and mammary glands. Also watch the kittens: excessive crying, poor weight gain, or a kitten’s death warrants veterinary advice.

Warning signs that need veterinary attention
Call a veterinarian promptly if you notice any of the following:
- Foul-smelling or pus-like discharge, or heavy bleeding
- Poor appetite or marked lethargy, especially if it lasts more than 24 hours
- Continued straining after delivery
- Panting, restlessness, stiffness, tremors, clumsy movement, twitching, or collapse
- Repeated or profuse vomiting or diarrhea, or excessive drinking
- Failure to nurse or signs of inadequate milk production
- Mammary glands that are hot, swollen, or painful, or milk that is bloody or pus-like
Heavy bleeding, foul discharge, collapse, seizures, tremors, or severe distress call for urgent veterinary attention. Do not try to treat these signs at home or give calcium supplements unless a veterinarian directs you to. Merck Veterinary Manual describes postpartum low blood calcium (puerperal hypocalcemia) as requiring immediate veterinary medical treatment.

What complications a veterinarian may assess
Warning signs can have different causes, and purring does not identify which one is present. Depending on the signs and examination, a veterinarian may assess for retained fetal membranes, metritis (infection or inflammation of the uterus after birth), mastitis (inflammation or infection of the mammary glands), or eclampsia, also called puerperal hypocalcemia. These are possibilities for a veterinarian to evaluate—not diagnoses that can be made from purring.

Nursing increases nutritional demands. Cats Protection recommends high-quality kitten food while a cat is nursing; VCA Animal Hospitals likewise says a diet formulated for pregnant cats or kittens provides additional nutrients needed during pregnancy and nursing. Choose a complete food suitable for kittens or nursing cats, and ask your veterinarian if the queen needs an individual diet. Food is not a treatment for postpartum warning signs.

When in doubt, call the veterinarian
If the mother is purring but you are unsure about her condition, describe what you observe—including her appetite, energy, discharge, nursing, movement, and any changes in the kittens—to your veterinarian. Purring cannot confirm that recovery is uncomplicated, and concerning signs are more useful than the sound itself when deciding to seek help.
