Several U.S. charities may help with veterinary costs, but each has different rules for urgency, eligibility, and who can apply. RedRover Relief and Frankie’s Friends focus on urgent or emergency treatment; The Pet Fund is described as a non-emergency option. AVMF REACH requests must come from an eligible veterinarian, while two other programs currently show application pauses. Grants are limited and never guaranteed, so check the current status and requirements before relying on any program.
Compare the seven programs before you apply
Use this table to narrow down which organizations might fit your situation. A paused program is not the same as an ineligible case, and a stated maximum is not a promise of funding.

Which programs fit urgent veterinary care?
RedRover Relief: urgent, specific treatment
RedRover’s Urgent Care grant is aimed at pet guardians facing financial hardship when an animal needs urgent, specific treatment. The published guidelines require the applicant and animal to live in the United States and set a household income ceiling of $60,000. You will need a current diagnosis, a veterinarian’s treatment plan, and a cost estimate. The program excludes diagnostic testing, routine care, ongoing conditions, follow-up after the main treatment, and cases in which most or all treatment has already taken place. RedRover says the average grant is around $250 and that requests needing $500 or more to start or continue treatment are outside what the program can fund. Funding is not assured. Read RedRover’s current Urgent Care grant guidelines.
The application closes Friday at 4 p.m. Pacific and reopens Monday at 9 a.m. Pacific. Check the live page for the current application window before preparing to submit.

Frankie’s Friends: emergency and specialty care
Frankie’s Friends considers requests for lifesaving emergency or specialty treatment for family-owned pets when the caregiver cannot cover the full cost. A licensed veterinarian must provide an estimate, diagnosis, specific treatment plan, and good prognosis. Grants are not guaranteed, cannot exceed $2,000 per pet per household, are paid to the treating veterinarian, and do not reimburse bills already paid. The fund excludes initial exams and diagnostics, routine primary care such as dental work or vaccinations, spay/neuter, monthly medication, euthanasia, and stray, rescue, or foster pets. It also says it cannot help pets treated at hospitals with their own foundations or funds, including Banfield, BluePearl, and VCA. Review Frankie’s Friends’ national fund requirements.
Which programs may help with care already provided or non-emergency needs?
AVMF REACH: your veterinarian applies
AVMF REACH is for eligible charitable care that a veterinary practice has already provided to an owner facing financial hardship. The veterinarian must be a current AVMA member and on the practice’s staff; pet owners cannot submit requests themselves. The program considers care delivered within the prior two months, not estimates, and excludes elective surgery and routine preventive care. Awards may be up to $1,000 per case and $1,000 per veterinarian applicant annually. Veterinarians in a practice may pool requests up to $5,000 per calendar year. Funding is limited, and approval is not guaranteed. Ask your veterinarian whether the practice participates and can submit a request. See the AVMF REACH program details.

It says applicants need a diagnosis, treatment plan, and financial-hardship documentation; routine or preventive costs and outstanding bills are excluded. Its listed maximum is a one-time grant of up to $400. However, the page currently says applications are temporarily not being accepted and asks visitors to check after October 14 for updates. Do not treat the program as open until its live page confirms applications have resumed. Check the Paws 4 A Cure application page.
Bow Wow Buddies Foundation: monitor the application page
RedRover’s directory describes the foundation as serving dogs with urgent veterinary needs. - Ask your veterinarian for a written diagnosis and treatment plan. RedRover and Frankie’s Friends require these; Paws 4 A Cure also lists them among its requirements when applications are open.
- Request an itemized estimate. RedRover and Frankie’s Friends require a cost estimate. AVMF REACH does not consider estimates because it applies to eligible care already delivered.
- Clarify what has already been paid or completed. Frankie’s Friends does not reimburse bills already paid, while RedRover excludes cases where most or all treatment has already occurred. AVMF REACH is specifically for eligible care provided within the prior two months.
- Confirm who must apply. For AVMF REACH, ask the practice to submit; owners cannot apply. For other programs, follow the applicant instructions on the organization’s current page.
- Check the live status and eligibility rules. Application pauses and program details can change. Confirm the current requirements before sharing personal documents or scheduling treatment around a possible grant.
- Ask about local options as well. Contact your local humane society, shelter, or community animal-welfare group. RedRover’s FAQ points readers to its broader directory, and Paws 4 A Cure also recommends checking with local animal-welfare organizations. Explore RedRover’s financial-assistance directory.
What to expect from a charitable grant
These programs are limited charitable assistance, not guaranteed coverage or repayable financing. A maximum award is a ceiling, not a promise that an eligible applicant will receive that amount. Apply only after checking the current rules, and ask the treating clinic whether it can proceed if a grant is unavailable or smaller than the bill. RedRover reported that 580 animals received grants in 2025; the organization also reported extending $173,132 as grants and providing advice and resources to 5,083 pet owners. AVMF reported that REACH supported more than 1,300 pets and families with over $1 million during 2025. These are organizations’ reported program figures, not a measure of nationwide demand or an indication of an individual applicant’s odds. RedRover program information and AVMF REACH information.
