Check gently for an obvious surface injury if your cat allows it, use clean pressure for bleeding, and contact a veterinarian promptly if the swelling is painful, worsening, accompanied by a wound or discharge, or your cat will not use the leg. Home first aid can protect an injury while you arrange care; it cannot determine or treat every cause.
What to do first
- Observe before examining. Note which paw is affected, when swelling began, whether it is getting worse, and whether your cat can bear weight. Look for bleeding, a wound, discharge, heat, or an unusual odor without forcing a painful inspection. Cats in pain may bite or scratch; stop if your cat resists or the examination hurts. VCA’s limping-cat guidance recommends seeking veterinary attention for most limps.
- Look only for an easy-to-reach surface problem. If your cat tolerates it, gently check the pads, between the toes, and around the nails for a cut, a torn pad, a broken nail, or a superficial object. Rinse dirt with cool, clean water. Remove a foreign object only if it is easy to grasp; do not dig or probe for embedded debris, which can worsen pain or bleeding. See VCA’s foot-pad first-aid instructions.
- Control bleeding with pressure. Hold a clean towel or absorbent dressing steadily against the wound. If bleeding from a torn foot pad cannot be stopped within 10–15 minutes, VCA advises emergency veterinary care in its guidance last updated June 20, 2024. Do not apply creams, ointments, disinfectants, or other chemicals to an open wound unless a veterinarian directs you. VCA’s open-wound guidance cautions against unadvised topical products.
- Keep activity low. Confine a lame cat and limit movement while arranging veterinary advice. Do not bend, straighten, or otherwise manipulate a leg that may be fractured or dislocated. VCA mentions an ice pack for 15 minutes when swelling may be due to a sprain or bruise, but recommends consulting a veterinarian; do not treat this as a universal remedy for an unexplained swollen paw. VCA’s limping-cat guidance.
- Arrange transport carefully. Use a suitable carrier and minimize handling. A removable-top carrier can make it easier to lower a painful cat in rather than push it through a small door. Follow the receiving clinic’s directions. See VCA’s advice on transporting a cat in an emergency.
When a swollen paw needs veterinary care
Seek urgent veterinary direction
Call a veterinary clinic or emergency service promptly if your cat has severe pain, the leg looks abnormally angled, bleeding is significant or will not stop, or the paw has a deep wound. Do not try to straighten or test a possibly injured limb. If your cat will not use the leg, contact a veterinarian rather than waiting to see whether home care works.
Arrange prompt examination
Contact a veterinarian for swelling that is painful, worsening, or persistent; a cut, puncture, burn, broken nail, discharge, or foul odor; or any concern that your cat’s condition is deteriorating. VCA advises veterinary care if lameness lasts more than 24 hours. That threshold is not a reason to wait when symptoms are severe or worsening.
A warm, soft-to-mildly-firm swelling may be an abscess. Bite punctures can close over quickly, so the entry wound may be hard to spot even when swelling and pain appear later. VCA advises taking a cat with a suspected abscess to a veterinarian as soon as possible; abscesses can become painful whether or not they rupture and can make a cat very sick. See VCA’s information on abscesses in cats and its limping-cat guidance.

Can you bandage a cat’s swollen paw?
A bandage may be used temporarily to protect a foot-pad wound if a veterinarian recommends it. VCA describes non-adherent gauze for cushioning and self-sticking wrap to hold the dressing in place. These are wound-covering supplies, not a treatment for the cause of swelling; do not wrap a paw simply to conceal swelling or postpone an examination.
Any wrap must be loose enough not to restrict circulation. Watch for swollen toes, foul odor, or moist discharge and contact the veterinarian if these occur. VCA recommends daily bandage changes and close monitoring of the injury. If you are unsure how to apply or change a dressing, ask the clinic for instructions rather than improvising a tight wrap. What might cause a cat’s paw to swell?
- Pad injury: A cut, puncture, or burn can damage the pad.
- Nail injury: A broken nail can cause sudden pain and limping.
- Bruise or sprain: Soft-tissue injury is possible, but an owner may not be able to distinguish it from a more serious problem.
- Infection or abscess: A bite puncture may close quickly, with pain and swelling becoming apparent days later.
- Other limb problems: Lameness and swelling can involve bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, or skin, sometimes without an obvious external injury.
These possibilities cannot identify the cause in an individual cat. A visible wound may not show how deep the injury is, and a paw that looks intact does not rule out a problem beneath the skin or involving the limb. A veterinary examination is needed to assess what is actually wrong.

- Do not apply creams, ointments, disinfectants, or other chemicals to an open wound without veterinary direction.
- Do not use a bandage to hide swelling or delay veterinary care.
- Do not assume a warm swelling or closed-over puncture is harmless; seek veterinary advice for a suspected abscess.
