If your cat is vomiting blood, contact a veterinarian promptly. Blood in vomit is a sign of an underlying problem, not a diagnosis in itself. VCA lists blood in vomit among signs that require immediate veterinary care, and PetMD advises veterinary examination for any amount of blood, even when it looks like only a small streak.
What blood in cat vomit looks like
Veterinary descriptions list several appearances. Blood may be bright red, appear as small pink or red streaks mixed with mucus or other material, or form darker clots. Blood that has been partly digested can look dark and resemble coffee grounds (PetMD, updated August 29, 2024).
Appearance does not reveal the cause or the location of the bleeding. A 2013 literature review in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery notes that hematemesis alone does not show whether the source is the stomach or another part of the gastrointestinal tract. A darker or smaller amount is not a reliable sign that the problem is minor.
Why is my cat vomiting blood?
Veterinary sources describe several groups of possible causes. They are the starting points a veterinarian will work through, not a ranking of likelihood for your cat.

Irritation, injury, or disease of the digestive tract
Persistent vomiting, ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, infection, and a foreign object that damages or blocks the digestive tract are all listed as possible causes (VCA, last updated August 14, 2026; Cornell Feline Health Center; and the 2013 review).
Drugs and toxins
Some medications and rodenticides can cause bleeding in the vomit. Caustic substances may injure the tract directly, while anticoagulant poisoning can impair clotting. Any possible exposure to a toxin should be reported to a veterinarian at once.
Clotting disorders, shock, and organ disease
Disorders that affect blood clotting, shock, kidney disease, liver disease, and cancer are listed as possible causes (PetMD and VCA).

Blood swallowed from elsewhere
Blood from a nosebleed, a mouth injury, or a respiratory problem can be swallowed and then vomited. In these cases the vomiting is not the original problem, so the veterinarian will still need to find where the blood came from.
Is blood in my cat’s vomit an emergency?
Treat it as urgent. Call your veterinarian now, and if the clinic is closed, go to an emergency animal hospital. Do not wait to see whether the vomiting stops on its own.

What to prepare before the appointment
Clinicians find it easier to narrow down causes when the owner can answer a few questions. Have these details ready when you call:
- When the vomiting started, and whether it has recurred.
- What the blood looked like: bright red, streaks, clots, or dark material.
- Any other symptoms, including changes in appetite, drinking, energy, or stool.
- Every medication the cat takes, including anything you have given recently.
- Possible access to toxins, rodent bait, or small objects the cat may have swallowed.
- Recent trauma, surgery, or a nosebleed or mouth injury.
- The cat’s relevant medical history.
A photo of the vomit can help describe what you saw. Send it or bring it along, but do not let photographing it delay the call or the trip to the clinic. Do not give your cat any medication, including human medicines, unless a veterinarian directs you to.

How veterinarians investigate the cause
The veterinarian starts with a history and physical examination, then chooses tests based on the cat’s condition and the suspected cause. Commonly described steps include:
- Bloodwork, including checks on clotting and organ function
- Urine and fecal testing
- Radiographs (X-rays) and ultrasound of the abdomen
- Endoscopy, biopsy, or exploratory surgery in selected cases
If the cat is dehydrated or in shock, the veterinarian will usually stabilize it before completing the full workup. The 2013 literature review describes further investigation whenever blood is present in vomit.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity, so there is no single home remedy for this symptom. Depending on the findings, a veterinarian may use:

Cornell Feline Health Center (last updated 2021) notes that specific treatment depends on the diagnosis. Because vomiting has many causes, the same symptom can lead to very different plans, and an owner should not choose a treatment before the cause is known.
Recovery depends on identifying and managing the cause. Follow-up instructions from the veterinarian, including any medication schedule and recheck timing, matter as much as the initial treatment.
If you are worried about the cost or the logistics of emergency care, tell the clinic at the start of the call so the team can explain options and the likely next steps.
