A cat’s third eyelid showing is a sign, not a diagnosis. The membrane normally protects and moistens the eye, but it should not protrude in a healthy cat. Inflammation, infection, injury, or a broader illness may be involved; the appearance alone cannot tell you which. Contact a veterinarian promptly, especially if your cat is squinting, has eye discharge or redness, or the eye looks cloudy, swollen, or held shut.

What is the third eyelid, and should it be visible?

The third eyelid, also called the haw or nictitating membrane, sits at the inner corner of the eye. It helps protect the eye and keep its surface moist. In a healthy cat it does not protrude, so a newly visible or persistent membrane is a reason to contact a veterinarian. Cornell’s Feline Health Center advises prompt assessment of unusual eye changes.

What can make a cat’s third eyelid show?

The available feline-specific guidance supports several broad possibilities, but not a definitive list of five distinct causes. A visible membrane can accompany local eye inflammation or infection, an injury, or illness affecting the cat more generally. Its appearance by itself cannot identify the cause.

Inflammation or infection

Conjunctivitis can make the third eyelid red or swollen. Other possible signs include squinting, frequent blinking, and watery or thicker discharge. Infection is a frequent cause of conjunctivitis, though irritants can also contribute. Cornell’s conjunctivitis guidance describes these signs and possible causes.

Injury or irritation

Trauma or irritation may affect the eye locally. One eye being affected can make trauma more likely, according to PetMD’s guidance on third-eyelid visibility and cat eye injuries, but this is only a clue—not a way to diagnose the problem at home.

A broader illness

When both eyes are affected, infection or another illness may be more likely than a single local injury, according to PetMD. Bilateral visibility does not prove a systemic illness, and one-sided visibility does not rule one out; a veterinarian needs to assess the individual cat.

How urgent is a visible third eyelid?

Contact a veterinarian promptly about a newly visible or persistent third eyelid. PetMD’s general eye-injury guidance says eye or eyelid changes should be addressed within 24 hours, if not sooner; treat this as triage guidance, not a guarantee that waiting is safe for every cat. Seek urgent veterinary advice sooner if the eye is held closed, your cat is squinting, or you notice discharge, marked redness or swelling, cloudiness, or an apparent injury.

When you call, tell the clinic whether one eye or both are affected, when you first noticed the change, and whether there is discharge, redness, swelling, cloudiness, squinting, frequent blinking, or a held-closed eye. Also mention any other signs of illness.

What might the veterinarian check?

The work-up depends on what the veterinarian finds; not every cat needs every test. PetMD describes a general examination and a detailed eye examination. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may use an ophthalmoscope to inspect the eye, stain the cornea to check for damage, or measure eye pressure with a tonometer. Additional tests may be appropriate when an underlying cause is not clear.

What should you do while arranging care?

  • Observe and report which eye is affected and any changes in appearance or behavior.
  • Do not try to diagnose the cause from whether one eye or both are involved.
  • Do not use unprescribed eye medication or assume an over-the-counter product will treat the cause. Treatment depends on the examination and diagnosis.
