Cats vs. Dogs: What Research Can—and Can’t—Say About Intelligence

Research does not establish an overall intelligence winner between cats and dogs. Direct comparisons reveal task-specific differences, while uneven evidence and participation limit broad conclusions.

Neither cats nor dogs have been shown to be smarter overall. Animal cognition is made up of abilities such as memory, problem-solving, learning, and responding to human cues; studies test particular abilities rather than awarding either species a universal intelligence score. Dogs have done better than cats in some direct experiments, but those results apply to the tasks tested—not to intelligence in general.

What does “smart” mean in an animal study?

A cat or dog may excel at one kind of problem and not another. Researchers therefore measure specific behaviors, not a single all-purpose quality called “smart.” A fair comparison needs to distinguish what an animal did in one task from how it learned across repeated trials, how it responded to human social cues, and whether it participated consistently enough for the task to measure the intended ability.

The amount of evidence matters, too. A review of cat cognition describes research on perception, object permanence, memory, physical reasoning, discrimination of quantity and time, responses to human cues, vocal recognition and communication, attachment, personality, and cognitive health. It also notes that cat cognition has received relatively little research, particularly compared with dog cognition. That uneven coverage makes a point-for-point species ranking difficult. What have direct cat-and-dog comparisons found?

Detouring around a transparent obstacle

In one experiment, privately owned cats and similarly sized companion dogs had to detour around a transparent obstacle to reach food. Dogs reached the reward faster. Across consecutive trials, dogs improved their speed and tended to reuse the side of the obstacle that had worked before; cats did not show the same improvement pattern and chose a side regardless of prior success. See the transparent-obstacle study.

This is evidence about performance and learning in that particular detour task. It does not show that dogs are generally more intelligent: the result cannot establish how either species would perform across the full range of cognitive abilities.

Choosing in response to human pointing

In a separate object-choice study involving human pointing gestures, cats made considerably fewer choices in the laboratory than dogs, and their tendency to choose declined over trials. The researchers’ comparison concerns both response to pointing and how reliably the animals took part. Read the object-choice study.

When an animal does not choose consistently, researchers have less evidence about what it understood from a cue. Low participation is not, by itself, proof of low intelligence; it complicates interpretation of the task outcome.

Why the evidence does not settle an overall winner

Comparative reviews make the same central point: dog cognition research cannot serve as a universal yardstick when the evidence on cats is much thinner. A review of canine cognition notes both that dogs have distinctive abilities in some comparative contexts and that more data on cats are needed for balanced comparisons. Read the review of canine cognition in comparative context.

So, a finding that dogs outperform cats on a particular measure is meaningful within that study, but it is not a general intelligence ranking. The available comparisons cover selected tasks, and differences in participation can affect what a test can tell researchers.

What to take away

  • There is no established, reliable score that ranks cats and dogs by overall intelligence.
  • Dogs outperformed cats on speed and improvement in one transparent-obstacle detour experiment; that finding is specific to the experiment.
  • Results from human-cue tasks must be interpreted in light of whether the animals participated consistently.
  • Cats have been studied across multiple cognitive domains, but the comparative evidence is uneven, limiting broad conclusions.
