Researchers reported three specimens collected in 2024, along with additional photographic records. That is a rediscovery—not proof that the fish was formally declared extinct and then brought back.
What fish was rediscovered in the Himalayas?
It was the Chel Snakehead, Channa amphibeus, a large snakehead species endemic to the Himalayan region of India. It is also known as Bora Chung. The species is a river fish, but the published abstract does not provide a measured maximum length or weight, so “giant” should not be taken as a specific size measurement.

Why is the rediscovery described as an 85-year gap?
The paper traces earlier specimen records to fish collected between 1918 and 1933. Researchers then documented three specimens in 2024. The interval between those earlier records and the new specimens is the basis for describing the fish as rediscovered after more than 85 years. It does not mean scientists know the species was absent throughout that period; it means there was a long gap in recorded specimens.
Was the Chel Snakehead officially extinct?
The paper says the long absence from records had prompted speculation that the species might have gone extinct. That speculation is not the same as a formal extinction determination. The 2025 report documents the species again; it does not describe a reversal of an official extinction declaration or demonstrate that its population has rebounded.

What evidence did researchers report?
The rediscovery rests on three specimens collected in 2024 and additional photographic records. The authors say the paper presents the first live image of C. amphibeus, along with biometric and genetic data. The accessible abstract does not state the measurements or genetic findings, so it does not support a precise size claim or detailed account of the fish’s biology.
What is still unknown about the species?
A rediscovery record confirms recent documentation, but it does not by itself establish how many Chel Snakeheads remain or whether the population is increasing or declining. The accessible abstract gives no population estimate, measured maximum size, or current conservation assessment. Those details should not be inferred from the fact that specimens were found again.
