The study describes this hidden stage; it did not measure survival or show that accelerometers improve it.
How do baby sea turtles get out of the nest?
After hatching, green turtle hatchlings must move upward through the sand before they can emerge and make the familiar crawl across the beach. That buried interval is difficult to observe directly. David Dor, David T Booth and Lisa E Schwanz studied this pre-emergence stage in green turtles (Chelonia mydas) on Heron Island, Australia.

In February 2023, the researchers attached a small accelerometer logger to one hatchling in each of ten nests, reburied the clutch and recovered the device after the hatchling emerged. The Axy 5 XS logger measured 21.5 × 11.5 × 7 mm, weighed 2 g and recorded raw acceleration on three axes at 1 Hz. The team also compared a short sample of hatchlings’ surface crawling with the signal recorded in the nest. These were research instruments attached to turtles, not consumer monitors or devices intended to improve hatchling survival.

Hatchlings spent much of the recorded time head-up
Across the ten recordings, hatchlings spent 67% of recorded time in a head-up orientation. Once that orientation was established, their movements were mainly along the axis associated with dorsal–ventral heaving and pitching, rather than left–right swaying.

The motion resembled vertical swimming, not literal swimming
The authors described the movement as “dorsal–ventral heaving and pitching as if swimming vertically through the sand to the surface.” This is an analogy for the recorded motion, not a claim that turtles literally swim through sand. It also differs from the alternating side-to-side crawl a person might expect from watching a hatchling move over the beach.
Activity came in irregular bursts
Movement was intermittent, with inactive intervals between bouts; the abstract reports that most short inactive periods lasted less than 10 minutes. During the first 24 hours of head-up activity, the researchers found no day–night pattern. In the final 24 hours before emergence, movement was more intense at night than during daytime.

How long did emergence take in this study?
For the ten monitored hatchlings, the interval from logger attachment to emergence ranged from 31 to 92 hours. The study reports median intervals of 76.2 ± 1.0 hours for the three natural nests and 73.9 ± 21.0 hours for the seven relocated nests. These are results from this particular sample and protocol, not a universal timetable for sea turtle hatchlings.
The researchers cautioned that excavating and re-burying nests may have loosened the sand column, making it easier for hatchlings to reach the surface. That possibility matters when interpreting the measured intervals.

What the findings do—and do not—say about survival
The study offers a way to observe movement during a hidden life stage and adds detail about how green turtle hatchlings progress through sand. It did not track survival, compare survival rates, or test whether using accelerometers helps more hatchlings reach the sea. The title’s survival framing should therefore be read as context for why early-life behaviour matters, not as a measured outcome of this experiment.
A separate 2022 paper described TurtleSense, an accelerometer-based system that monitors movement and temperature in nests to help identify activity patterns and estimate emergence timing. That is distinct from the 2024 study: TurtleSense monitors nest events, while Dor and colleagues attached loggers directly to hatchlings to record their movements. The 2024 study’s data files are available through Dryad; data availability does not make the study’s logger or analyses a validated consumer tool.
