The Chihuahua is a tiny, long-lived companion dog with a confident personality, substantial training needs, and a level of physical fragility that requires thoughtful handling. The breed can thrive in an apartment or other small home, but it is not a low-maintenance dog: owners must plan for socialization, dental care, weight control, cold-weather protection, and prevention of falls or rough play.

What does a Chihuahua look like?

The Chihuahua is a compact, balanced toy breed rather than a deliberately fragile-looking dog. Its familiar features include a rounded “apple” skull, large erect ears, full expressive eyes, a compact body that is usually slightly longer than tall, and a tail carried in a sickle or loop. The official breed standard emphasizes a level topline, balanced movement, alert expression, and a confident, terrier-like presence.

The AKC describes an expected height of about 5–8 inches and a weight not exceeding 6 pounds. The Chihuahua Club of America’s standard also sets 6 pounds as the maximum; in the conformation ring, a dog above that weight is disqualified. That is a show-ring requirement, not a diagnosis or a statement that every individual pet above 6 pounds is unhealthy. Body condition, muscle, proportions, and veterinary assessment matter more to a pet’s health than pursuing the smallest possible number on a scale.

Smooth coat and long coat

Chihuahuas have two official coat varieties:

  • Smooth coat: Short, close, soft, and glossy.
  • Long coat: Longer hair that may be flat or slightly wavy, often with feathering on the ears, legs, feet, and tail, plus a neck ruff.

Both varieties are the same breed. The standard permits every color, including solid, marked, and splashed patterns. Color, coat length, or exceptionally small size does not by itself determine temperament, health, or quality.

Is a “teacup Chihuahua” a separate breed?

No. “Teacup Chihuahua” is not an official AKC or Chihuahua Club of America variety. The breed standard does not create a separate size category called teacup. Exceptionally small dogs may need additional care because their margin for error around food intake, cold, falls, and injury can be smaller, so buyers should be cautious of sellers using “teacup” as a quality guarantee or marketing label.

Chihuahua temperament and behavior

A well-socialized Chihuahua is often alert, loyal, affectionate with familiar people, adaptable, and remarkably self-assured for its size. The official standard describes terrier-like confidence, self-reliance, and self-importance. Many Chihuahuas form a particularly close bond with one or more household members.

That confidence can also appear as barking, vigilance, stranger wariness, guarding, or reactivity to unfamiliar dogs, sounds, and movement. These behaviors are not inevitable, and “small dog” should never be treated as a synonym for aggressive. Early, humane exposure to people, dogs, household activity, handling, and different environments gives a puppy more opportunities to learn that new experiences can be safe.

Owners should reward calm greetings, quiet behavior, appropriate distance from triggers, and willingness to be handled. Allowing a Chihuahua to bark at every visitor, avoid all handling, or guard a favored person can make those habits stronger. At the same time, forcing a frightened dog into overwhelming situations can increase fear. Gradual exposure paired with rewards is a safer approach; serious fear, guarding, or biting warrants help from a qualified reward-based behavior professional and a veterinarian.

Training and socialization

Chihuahuas are intelligent and can learn quickly. Their small size does not reduce their need for rules, communication, or mental activity. They may take advantage of inconsistent boundaries—for example, being allowed to bark for attention one day and punished for it the next.

Begin with short, frequent, reward-based sessions. Useful early goals include:

  • Responding to a name and coming when called indoors
  • Walking on a loose leash
  • Settling quietly on a mat or in a pen
  • Accepting gentle handling of paws, ears, eyes, and mouth
  • Comfort with a crate or exercise pen
  • Polite greetings and calm visitor routines
  • Being carried safely when necessary while still learning to move on cue
  • Cooperative nail trims and tooth brushing
  • House-training with a consistent schedule

Positive reinforcement is especially useful because punishment can create fear, avoidance, or defensive behavior. If using small training treats for dogs, choose tiny pieces and count them as part of the daily calorie allowance; treats do not automatically solve barking, fear, or poor socialization.

Why house-training can take patience

A Chihuahua has a very small bladder, and cold or wet weather may make a puppy reluctant to go outside. Take puppies out frequently, especially after sleeping, eating, drinking, playing, and exciting activity. Supervision, a predictable schedule, and immediate rewards for eliminating in the correct place are more effective than punishment after an accident. Ask a veterinarian about persistent accidents, sudden changes, excessive thirst, diarrhea, or straining, since these can have medical causes.

  • CHICKEN FLAVOR DOGS ACCEPT WELL: The chicken-flavored enzymatic toothpaste for dogs encourages cooperation during brushing; if your dog is sensitive to flavor intensity, start with small amounts to build a consistent daily habit.

  • TWO BRUSH STYLES FOR FIT: The kit pairs a dual-sided toothbrush for standard brushing with a finger toothbrush for dogs sized for small mouths and hard-to-reach spots, so you can match the tool to your dog's comfort and mouth size.

Exercise, enrichment, and apartment living

Most Chihuahuas do not need the endurance exercise of a working or sporting breed. Many can meet much of their activity requirement through indoor movement and play, supplemented by short, slow walks. The right amount depends on age, health, weather, fitness, and body condition. A Chihuahua that is panting heavily, struggling to keep up, stumbling, or trying to stop should be taken out of the situation and allowed to rest; a carrier or secure ride home can be useful when a dog is tired or the environment becomes hazardous.

An apartment can be an excellent home, but a small floor plan does not eliminate the need for enrichment. Rotate activities such as:

  • Two- to five-minute training sessions
  • Supervised toy play
  • Scent searches using part of the dog’s meal
  • Food puzzles appropriate to the dog’s size and chewing habits
  • Calm observation of the outside world from a safe location
  • Short walks that allow relaxed sniffing rather than forced distance

Because Chihuahuas are small and can be injured by falls, block unsafe stairs, prevent leaps from beds and sofas, and supervise play with larger dogs. A properly fitted small-dog harness can be practical for walks, but measure the dog’s chest rather than choosing by breed label, check for rubbing or escape gaps, and supervise its use. No harness makes rough play, traffic, or unsupervised dog interactions safe.

Are Chihuahuas good family dogs?

They can be excellent companions for adults and families with older, respectful children. They are generally a poor match for homes with very young children or anyone likely to pick up, squeeze, chase, or handle a dog roughly. A Chihuahua’s small body can be hurt by an accidental drop or a tumble during play, even when nobody intends harm.

Children should learn to let the dog approach, avoid disturbing it while eating or sleeping, and ask an adult before picking it up. An adult should supervise every interaction. A calm, predictable home is usually more important than having a large amount of indoor space.

Grooming and daily care

Smooth-coat Chihuahuas generally need occasional brushing and regular bathing. Long-coat Chihuahuas should generally be brushed at least weekly, with extra attention to feathering and areas where tangles form. Both varieties need regular nail trims, periodic ear checks, and routine dental care. Grooming should keep the coat neat rather than substantially sculpting or altering it.

A small slicker brush, grooming comb, or nail trimmer can make routine care easier; choose tools sized for a toy breed and introduce them gradually with food rewards. Stop if the dog is panicking, and seek professional help for severe matting or handling problems.

Dental care is a major Chihuahua responsibility

Small mouths can become crowded, and Chihuahuas may develop plaque, calculus, periodontal disease, or retained puppy teeth. Ideally, brush the teeth daily or nearly every day with a dog-safe toothpaste and a brush designed for dogs. Begin with allowing the dog to taste the product and tolerate a finger or brush near the lips before attempting a full brushing.

A dog toothbrush kit may support regular home plaque control, but it cannot remove established calculus. Plaque can mineralize into calculus, and professional veterinary cleaning may be needed. Your veterinarian should examine the mouth, discuss retained teeth or extractions when appropriate, and advise how often dental examinations are needed.

Never use human toothpaste on a dog. Products containing xylitol can cause profound low blood sugar and, at higher exposures, serious liver injury. If a Chihuahua may have swallowed xylitol, do not wait for symptoms or attempt home treatment: contact a veterinarian or animal poison service immediately.

Nutrition and weight management

Feed a complete and balanced diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage, using a veterinarian’s advice when the dog has a health condition or unusual nutritional needs. Measure meals rather than estimating, and review the dog’s body condition regularly. In a dog weighing only a few pounds, a handful of treats or table scraps can represent a substantial share of daily calories.

Keep treats small, reduce the main meal when appropriate, and look at the dog from above and from the side when assessing condition. Your veterinarian can tell you whether the dog is underweight, at an ideal condition, or carrying excess fat. Do not restrict food aggressively in a growing puppy without veterinary guidance.

Hypoglycemia in very small puppies

Very young, unusually small, stressed, ill, or poorly eating puppies may be vulnerable to hypoglycemia. A puppy that is weak, trembling, unusually sleepy, uncoordinated, collapsing, or seizing needs urgent veterinary advice. Puppy feeding frequency should be individualized with a veterinarian; some Chihuahua puppies may need frequent meals, but sugar or other home remedies are not a substitute for professional assessment and can delay lifesaving treatment.

Health concerns in Chihuahuas

Breed predisposition is not a diagnosis, and a health-tested puppy can still develop disease. Nevertheless, knowing the concerns associated with Chihuahuas helps owners choose preventive care and recognize changes early.

Conditions and screening to discuss

  • Patellar luxation: The kneecap moves out of its normal groove. Signs range from none to intermittent “skipping,” lameness, pain, or persistent difficulty using a leg. Severity is graded, and treatment depends on the grade and its effect on the dog.
  • Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: An orthopedic condition associated with some small breeds, including Chihuahuas. Limping, pain, or reluctance to use a hind limb should be evaluated.
  • Heart disease: Potential concerns include patent ductus arteriosus and mitral valve disease. Ask your veterinarian what examinations are appropriate at routine visits.
  • Eye disease: Regular veterinary assessment is important, particularly when selecting breeding stock.
  • Idiopathic epilepsy: Seizures have multiple possible causes. Any first seizure or unexplained collapse requires prompt veterinary guidance.
  • Dental disease: Crowding, retained puppy teeth, plaque, and calculus make oral examinations especially important.

The AKC identifies three parent-club-recommended evaluations for Chihuahua breeding dogs: a patella evaluation, a cardiac examination, and an ophthalmologist evaluation. Prospective buyers should request verifiable results for both parents and ask what veterinary examinations and vaccinations the puppy has received. Screening lowers risk; it does not eliminate inherited disease.

When a Chihuahua needs veterinary attention

Arrange an examination for repeated skipping, limping, pain, reluctance to climb or use a limb, coughing, breathing difficulty, fainting, eye changes, seizures, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or a marked change in appetite or energy. A “molera”—a soft spot that may occur in the breed—should not alone be treated as proof of purity or automatic evidence of illness. The dog’s overall health and veterinary evaluation are what matter.

Cold weather, handling, and transportation

Chihuahuas can be sensitive to cold because of their small bodies and, in some individuals, their short coats. Limit exposure when the dog is cold, shivering, reluctant to walk, or otherwise uncomfortable. A correctly fitted small-dog winter coat may help some dogs outdoors, but clothing must be supervised, kept dry, and removed if it restricts movement, causes overheating, or is chewed.

Use two hands when lifting: support the chest and the hindquarters, keep the dog close to your body, and prevent sudden jumping. For travel or crowded areas, a secure small dog carrier can provide controlled transport during fatigue, extreme weather, or hazardous surroundings. Select a well-ventilated carrier with secure closures, use the correct size, and acclimate the dog gradually. A carrier is transportation and safety equipment, not a replacement for appropriate exercise.

Choosing a Chihuahua responsibly

Do not select a puppy solely because it is the smallest, quietest, or most unusual color. Ask to see the mother, observe the puppies in a clean and appropriately social environment, and request documentation rather than accepting verbal assurances. Discuss patella, cardiac, and eye screening for the parents, the puppy’s veterinary records, parasite prevention, diet, socialization, and any known family health history.

Be especially cautious of sellers who advertise “teacup” as a separate breed or guarantee that a puppy will remain at an exceptionally tiny size. A responsible breeder or rescue should also ask questions about your home and help match temperament and needs. Adoption through a reputable rescue can be a good option, though the dog’s history and health information may be incomplete.

Is a Chihuahua right for you?

A Chihuahua may be a strong match if you want a portable companion, can provide daily interaction and training, are comfortable with routine dental care, and can protect a tiny dog from rough handling, falls, larger animals, and cold. The breed’s size makes some logistics easier, but it does not make the dog maintenance-free.

Think carefully if you want a dog that is automatically quiet, naturally house-trained, safe for unsupervised young children, or content to be carried everywhere without learning skills. The best Chihuahua home treats the dog as a complete dog: small in stature, but deserving of exercise, boundaries, enrichment, socialization, preventive medicine, and respectful handling.

Sources and evidence notes

Breed description and temperament information in this guide are based on the American Kennel Club educational material and the Chihuahua Club of America breed standard and statements. Health and dental explanations draw on the Merck Veterinary Manual. Puppy hypoglycemia guidance reflects veterinary educational material summarized from PetMD. These sources describe breed tendencies and care considerations, not a diagnosis for an individual dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a teacup Chihuahua a real breed?

No. “Teacup Chihuahua” is not an official AKC or Chihuahua Club of America variety. It is a marketing term for an exceptionally small dog, and extreme smallness may bring additional care concerns.

Are Chihuahuas good apartment dogs?

Often, yes. Chihuahuas can get much of their activity through indoor play and movement, plus short walks. They still need training, enrichment, safe exploration, and protection from overexertion.

Are Chihuahuas good with children?

They can be, provided children are older and understand gentle handling. Chihuahuas are physically delicate and should never be left unsupervised with young children or exposed to rough play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should a Chihuahua be groomed?

Smooth coats generally need occasional brushing, while long coats should generally be brushed at least weekly. Both varieties need nail care, ear checks, bathing as needed, and regular dental care.

How long do Chihuahuas live?

The AKC commonly gives a 14–16-year expectation, while other AKC educational material gives a broader 15–17-year estimate. Presenting the likely range as approximately 14–17 years is more realistic than promising a specific lifespan.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Chihuahuas are intelligent, affectionate, adaptable toy dogs that can live happily in small homes, but their tiny bodies demand careful handling and their confident personalities demand consistent training. Plan for dental care, measured nutrition, positive socialization, cold-weather protection, and veterinary screening rather than choosing one simply because it is small.
