Choosing a Lab Aquarium or Terrarium for Research and Observation

The right lab aquarium or terrarium depends on the animal, its life stage, and the study. Compare aquatic, terrestrial, and mixed-habitat needs before choosing a system.

There is no single “best” lab aquarium or terrarium: the right enclosure depends on the organism, its life stage, and the study protocol. Start by deciding whether the animal needs aquatic, terrestrial, or mixed habitat, then assess whether a candidate system can maintain the required conditions, support routine care and observation, and meet applicable institutional and regulatory requirements.

Start with the animal and the study

A research aquarium and a terrarium serve different housing needs. An aquatic enclosure must provide suitable water conditions and a way to monitor and maintain them; a terrestrial enclosure must suit the animal’s land-based environment. Some animals need both aquatic and terrestrial areas. General husbandry guidance can help frame a design, but it does not replace the approved animal-use protocol or facility requirements.

Before choosing an enclosure, define:

  • Species and life stage: Housing needs vary among organisms and can change as animals develop.
  • Study purpose and protocol: The study may determine required environmental controls, monitoring, separation, and handling practices.
  • Habitat type: Establish whether the animal needs aquatic, terrestrial, or mixed habitat rather than treating all enclosures as interchangeable.

What a research aquarium needs to support

The National Academies’ Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Eighth Edition (2011), treats aquatic housing separately from terrestrial housing. Its criteria for aquatic primary enclosures call for support of normal physiological and behavioral needs, stable conditions, appropriate water quality, and practical monitoring and water changes. The enclosure should also keep food accessible while allowing food waste to be removed, limit escape and entrapment, use nontoxic materials, and avoid electrical hazards. See the Guide, Chapter 3.

Observation is part of the design, not an afterthought. The Guide says the enclosure should “allow for observation of the animals with minimal disturbance.” Consider whether animals can be monitored without unnecessary disruption and whether routine maintenance can be carried out safely.

Choose water testing to match the protocol

There is no universal water-quality test panel or testing frequency for every lab aquarium. The Guide says the institution or individual animal-use protocol should identify acceptable water-quality standards, which parameters to test, and how often to test them. A water-quality testing kit is useful only when its measurements and ranges match those requirements; the product label alone cannot establish research suitability.

When a terrarium needs a mixed habitat

“Terrarium” is not a single design specification. Some semi-aquatic or semi-terrestrial amphibians may need both terrestrial and aquatic components, while terrestrial reptiles have different enclosure considerations. The UK government’s guidance for animals used for scientific purposes gives examples for particular groups; those examples should not be generalized to every species or research terrarium. Check the guidance applicable to your jurisdiction and its current version.

Seachem Prime -500 ml/ 17 fl. oz.
  • POWERFUL TREATMENT: Seachem Prime is a complete and concentrated conditioner for both freshwater and saltwater fish tanks, working hard to remove chlorine and chloramine.
  • REMOVER: Seachem Prime immediately and permanently removes chlorine and chloramine, successfully allowing the bio filter to remove ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate while they are detoxified for 48 hours.
  • DETOXIFIER: Seachem Prime effectively detoxifies ammonia, nitrite, and heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels, providing a ideal environment for your betta, tetra, or other fish.
  • USE: Use 1 capful (5 mL) of Seachem Prime for each 200 L (50 US gallons) of new or replacement water. For best results, add Seachem Prime to new water first. For exceptionally high chloramine concentrations, a double dose may be used safely. For smaller volumes, use 2 drops per gallon.
  • SAFETY: In case of an emergency, the 5x dose of Seachem Prime may be used for both ammonia and nitrite. Use a ½ dose if the water temperature is > 30°C (86°F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low.

Compare candidate systems against the real requirements

Rather than ranking tanks or terrariums in the abstract, assess each candidate against the animal’s needs and the study’s constraints.

Decision point What to establish
Habitat Whether the organism needs aquatic, terrestrial, or mixed habitat, based on its species and life stage.
Environmental control Whether the system can maintain and measure the conditions specified by the institution or protocol.
Care and observation Whether monitoring, water changes or other routine care can be done while minimizing disturbance and maintaining access.
Safety Whether materials are nontoxic, escape and entrapment risks are addressed, and electrical hazards are avoided where relevant.
Study separation Whether the setup and facility can separate animals, projects, quarantines, or specialized housing as required.
Governance Whether the design meets the approved protocol, institutional policies, and applicable regulations.

Specialist aquatic facilities may use system components such as filters, pumps, biofilters, and monitoring equipment. These are categories of equipment, not an endorsement of a consumer aquarium model or vendor. A product listing does not show that a system is suitable for regulated research.

Facility separation and regulatory scope

Facility layout can matter as much as the individual enclosure. In the United States, 40 CFR § 160.43 addresses test-system care facilities within that regulation’s scope. It calls for enough animal rooms or other test-system areas to provide appropriate separation of species, projects, quarantines, and specialized housing. For aquatic toxicity projects, it addresses isolation as needed to prevent cross-contamination between chemicals. This is a scoped US regulatory provision, not a universal rule for every laboratory or jurisdiction.

The National Academies Guide is the 2011 eighth edition and calls for its framework to be applied with species-, strain-, or use-specific needs in mind. Confirm current rules and your institution’s approved protocol before implementing a housing design.
