Perth’s City Beach was temporarily closed on 10 March 2023 after a helicopter crew reported seeing a large shark offshore. PerthNow described it as an estimated five-metre great white about 50 metres from shore; those figures were reported estimates, not verified measurements. 7NEWS said the beach reopened around midday.
What was reported at City Beach
PerthNow reported that the Surf Life Saving Westpac Helicopter spotted the shark at approximately 10:27am on 10 March 2023. The report described it as circling about 50 metres offshore and estimated its length at five metres. The incident details come from contemporary news coverage, not a retrieved official incident log, so the species, size, distance and circling behavior should be understood as reported rather than independently confirmed. PerthNow’s report covered the sighting.

No. This was a specific event from March 2023, and it does not establish present-day beach status. A separate SharkSmart alert issued on 28 September 2026 concerned a whale carcass at City Beach, which could attract sharks. In its 1 October update, SharkSmart said the carcass had been removed but beaches in the City Beach area remained closed because residue might attract sharks. That update does not establish the status on 4 October 2026. For a visit, check the current SharkSmart alerts rather than relying on either historical report.
