A video reported in August 2023 shows a large carpet python moving from the roof of a Queensland home toward nearby trees as a family watches. The caption and news headlines called it five metres long, but that measurement was never confirmed.
What happened in the Queensland snake video?
PerthNow reported on 29 August 2023 that footage showed a carpet python moving from a home’s rooftop into nearby trees while family members watched. The report reproduced the video caption: “Only in Australia will you see a 5 metre long Carpet Snake in the suburbs”. A fact-check result summary identifies TikTok user @iamiandyi as the original publisher, with the clip posted on 27 August 2023. PerthNow’s report said the video had more than 1.1 million views at the time of publication; that is a dated figure, not a current view count.

The news report also quoted a child asking, “How will we get him away,” and an adult replying, “We won’t.” These are lines as reproduced by the report, not an independently verified transcript. The exact Queensland location and any direct comment from the family or uploader were not established in the available reporting.
Was the carpet snake really five metres long?
There is no verified measurement of the snake. The five-metre figure comes from the video caption and repeated media descriptions; the fact-check summary says it could not determine the animal’s exact length. It found no reason to doubt the footage’s authenticity and no evidence of digital editing, but an apparently genuine video does not establish the caption’s measurement. The fact-check summary therefore supports separating what the clip appears to show from how long the snake was.

Queensland government carpet python guidance, as summarized in that fact-check, says carpet pythons can grow up to 4 metres, though most do not exceed 2.5 metres. The guidance is general information about the species, not a way to measure the individual snake in the video. The five-metre claim is not confirmed by those figures.
What kind of snake was it, and can carpet pythons be near homes?
The contemporaneous report described the animal as a carpet python, also called a carpet snake. Queensland government guidance summarized by the fact-check says carpet pythons occur in varied habitats and may be found around structures such as houses or sheds. Their appearance near a home is therefore consistent with the general guidance, but the available sources do not establish a more precise location or circumstance for this particular video.
