When your dog seems overwhelmed, calmly increase distance from whatever is upsetting them and guide them toward a familiar, quiet place. Give them time to settle without insisting on food, attention, or obedience. “Overstimulated” is a useful everyday description, not a diagnosis: look at what your dog is doing and what is happening around them, rather than assuming one behavior has a single cause.
What to do when your dog is overwhelmed
- Move away from the trigger. Quietly leave the area or block the source of noise, movement, or contact if you can. Do not stay to see whether your dog will get used to it; intense exposure without a chance to recover can make fear or reactivity worse.
- Offer a quiet retreat. Choose a familiar, low-stimulation spot where your dog can disengage. Let them rest there without crowding or repeatedly calling them.
- Make interaction optional. A treat or familiar cue may help some dogs move to safety. If your dog turns away, avoids you, refuses food, or seems more distressed when you engage, stop asking for attention or a response.
- Do not punish warning signs. Barking, growling, pulling away, or freezing can signal distress. Prioritize space and safety instead of reprimanding the dog for communicating discomfort.
These steps reflect VCA’s guidance on fear and anxiety in dogs to remove the stressor and find a quiet place. Food and engagement are not useful for every dog in every moment.

How to recognize stress in your dog
Possible signs include lip-licking, yawning, panting, pacing, whining, barking, looking away, hiding, ears held back, a tucked tail, visible whites of the eyes, raised hackles, freezing, or growling. A dog may also refuse food or become unusually still. None of these signs proves stress on its own: yawning can mean tiredness, for example, and vocalizing has several possible causes. Read the behavior in context and compare it with your dog’s usual behavior.

Stress can build across several events
A dog may cope with one stressful event but have less capacity after several more. A vet visit, a barking dog on the walk, and then a doorbell can accumulate until the final event triggers a strong reaction. This is often called trigger stacking. When a dog is over threshold, they may be unable to focus or learn in that moment; give them distance and time to recover rather than adding demands.
Freezing or withdrawing does not necessarily mean a dog is calm. Repeated, intense exposure without a chance to recover—sometimes called flooding—can worsen fear or reactivity. For more on recognizing stress and responding without unnecessary pressure, see the AKC’s guidance on helping a stressed dog feel more comfortable.

How to help your dog recover and prevent overload
Lower demands after an incident
Give your dog quiet time after a stressful episode. Resume normal activities gradually, and keep the next training session farther from the trigger than the point at which your dog became uncomfortable. If a stimulus recurs at home, a calm retreat can give your dog a place to disengage. Comfortable exercise may suit a healthy dog, but adding more activity is not an automatic answer to distress.
Practice settling before you need it
Build a settle routine during calm periods, not for the first time during a crisis. In a quiet environment, place a mat or bed in a spot where your dog can relax. Reward soft, relaxed postures and use a quiet tone; the goal is emotional as well as physical relaxation, not simply keeping the dog still. VCA’s settle exercise uses a mat or bed and small treats as part of this practice.

A dog training mat is just a station for practicing the routine; a familiar bed can serve a similar role. Do not force your dog to stay in place. If they tense up, resist touch, snarl, or growl during handling practice, stop and consult a qualified behavior professional.
Work gradually on a recurring trigger
For a known trigger, gradual desensitization and counterconditioning may help. Begin at a distance or intensity where your dog remains comfortable, pair the trigger with something positive, and increase exposure slowly. If your dog shows distress, stops readily taking treats, or cannot settle, increase distance or reduce intensity rather than continuing.

Choose enrichment for the individual dog
Some dogs enjoy sniffing, foraging, a snuffle mat, or a food puzzle; others may not find those activities calming. Treat them as optional enrichment, not as remedies for anxiety. Supervise food-filled toys and chews because of choking or ingestion risks, and ask your veterinarian about the safety of particular toys for your dog. VCA’s guidance on food puzzles for dogs covers their use and supervision.

When to contact a veterinarian or behavior professional
Contact your veterinarian if stress is frequent, persistent, appears suddenly, occurs across many triggers, or is getting worse. A veterinary exam can help determine whether pain, discomfort, or another medical issue contributes to the behavior. Your veterinarian may recommend a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Medication can be part of an individualized treatment plan, but do not give medication or supplements based on a general article; supplements can interact with medications, so discuss them with your dog’s veterinarian.
If your dog is afraid of veterinary visits, ask the veterinary team about a pre-visit plan. Any prescribed medication may need to be given well before arrival, on the schedule the team sets; do not work out a dose or timing on your own. As VCA explains in its guidance on pre-visit pharmaceuticals, “Fear and stress can prevent your dog’s veterinary team from completing a true assessment of your dog’s health.”
