Cloudy Eyes in Dogs: Common Causes and Treatments

Cloudy eyes in dogs can result from age-related lens change, cataracts, corneal injury, glaucoma, or inflammation. Learn the warning signs and how vets diagnose and treat them.

A cloudy eye is a sign, not a diagnosis: the haze may affect the cornea or lens, or accompany disease inside the eye. Because appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish harmless age-related change from a sight-threatening problem, a veterinarian should assess new or unexplained cloudiness; sudden, painful, or vision-affecting changes need prompt attention.

Where the cloudiness is—and what it may mean

The cornea is the clear dome at the front of the eye; the lens sits behind the pupil and focuses light onto the retina. Problems in either structure can make an eye look cloudy. Inflammation or raised pressure inside the eye can also change its appearance.

Possible cause Where it occurs Typical clue Why it matters
Lenticular (nuclear) sclerosis Lens Blue-gray haze behind the pupil in an older dog Common aging change, but it can resemble a cataract
Cataract Lens Opaque area in the lens Can reduce vision and lead to complications
Corneal disease or ulcer Cornea Cloudy or irregular-looking front surface, sometimes with squinting or swelling May be painful; a deep ulcer can threaten the eye
Glaucoma Pressure inside the eye Cloudiness with redness, pain, swelling, or an abnormal pupil High pressure can damage the optic nerve and cause blindness
Uveitis Inflammation within the eye Cloudiness with other signs of eye inflammation May be associated with infection, injury, immune disease, or another eye disorder

Common causes and their treatments

Lenticular (nuclear) sclerosis

As dogs age, lens fibers become compressed and less transparent, producing a bluish haze visible behind the pupil. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine describes this as a common age-related change that usually does not make a dog blind, though fine-detail vision may be affected. The lens remains translucent; a cataract is opaque. Because the two can be hard to distinguish by appearance, have a new or uncertain haze checked rather than assuming it is normal aging.

Cataracts

A cataract is an opacity in the lens that blocks light reaching the retina. Depending on its size and progression, it may impair vision or cause blindness. Causes include inherited factors, diabetes, malnutrition, inflammation, and trauma. Cornell reports that about 75–80% of diabetic dogs develop cataracts within the first year after diagnosis; its article does not state the publication year for this figure.

A veterinarian may monitor a cataract or discuss surgery if the dog is a suitable candidate. Cornell reports surgical success rates as high as 80–90% for ideal candidates; that figure is not a guarantee for an individual dog. Untreated or chronic cataracts can be associated with lens-induced uveitis, glaucoma, lens displacement, and retinal detachment, so follow-up matters even when surgery is not pursued.

Timing can affect surgical suitability. Cornell ophthalmology professor Kelly Knickelbein says, “The ideal time to perform cataract surgery is prior to the cataract becoming mature, as more advanced cataracts (mature and hyper-mature) are more likely to cause lens-induced intraocular inflammation, lens instability, and loss of lens capsule integrity.” Ask the veterinarian whether referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist is appropriate.

Corneal cloudiness, injury, or ulcer

The cornea may turn cloudy because of fluid buildup, inflammatory cells, pigmentation, or fibrous tissue. Scratches, foreign material, and chemical exposure can cause corneal ulcers. Pain, an irregular-looking cornea, and swelling may occur; deeper ulcers can threaten the eye’s integrity. Prompt veterinary assessment is important when an injury or ulcer is possible.

Treatment depends on what the examination finds. It may include prescription topical medication or veterinarian-performed removal of damaged tissue; more serious cases may need surgery or grafting. Do not try to remove an embedded object or treat a suspected ulcer with household products.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma occurs when fluid does not drain adequately and pressure rises inside the eye. It can damage the optic nerve and cause blindness. Redness and squinting may appear early. Sudden, severe glaucoma can cause a swollen or discolored cornea, a dilated or poorly responsive pupil, and an eye that feels firm.

If glaucoma is suspected, Merck Veterinary Manual advises immediate veterinary attention. A veterinarian measures intraocular pressure with a tonometer and determines whether medication, surgery, or both are appropriate for the type and condition of the eye.

Uveitis and other internal disease

Uveitis is inflammation within the eye. Possible causes include infection, trauma, immune-mediated disease, cataracts, and other eye disorders. Treatment is selected for the underlying cause and may include prescription anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial medication. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may examine the cornea, perform a physical examination, or recommend blood or eye-fluid tests.

When to seek veterinary care

  • Seek immediate care: cloudiness that comes on suddenly with redness, apparent pain, swelling, a dilated or slow-moving pupil, a firm-feeling eye, or a sudden change in vision. These signs can indicate acute glaucoma or another urgent problem.
  • Arrange prompt assessment: suspected scratches, foreign material, chemical exposure, or corneal ulceration.
  • Contact a veterinarian for any new or unexplained cloudiness: do not wait to see whether it clears, even if the dog seems comfortable.

What the veterinary examination may involve

Be ready to explain when the change began, whether one or both eyes are affected, any possible injury or chemical exposure, medicines already used, and changes in vision or behavior. These details help the veterinarian choose the right tests.

Choosing a treatment plan

There is no single treatment for cloudy eyes. The plan depends on the affected structure, the cause and severity, the urgency, and the dog’s health and likely benefit from treatment. Discuss these points with the veterinarian:

  • Goal: monitoring, treating inflammation or infection, protecting vision, addressing pressure, or maintaining comfort.
  • Options and burden: whether the condition can be managed with follow-up and prescription medicine or whether a procedure or surgery should be considered.
  • Suitability and risks: for cataract surgery, factors include cataract maturity, possible complications, overall health, and expected benefit.

Do not use leftover prescription drops or human eye medicines unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to do so. A hard plastic Elizabethan collar may be part of veterinarian-directed at-home care after cataract surgery, as Cornell notes, but it is a recovery aid—not a treatment for cloudiness or a routine need for every dog.
