The National Park Service (NPS) described it as only the second confirmed wolverine detection in California in more than a century. The sighting is significant, but it does not show that wolverines have re-established a breeding population in Yosemite or the Sierra Nevada.
What happened in Yosemite?
An NPS ranger observed the wolverine in Yosemite National Park’s backcountry on May 24, 2023. The agency’s account, on its Threatened Mammals – Yosemite National Park page, was last updated September 22, 2025.

The observation is a confirmed detection of one animal—not a population count, a reintroduction, or evidence that a group is living in the park. NPS did not establish the individual’s sex or origin.
Why was this sighting so rare?
Wolverines were formerly native to California and are thought to have become locally extinct there. NPS says the last California specimen was collected in 1922. A wolverine was later definitively detected at a camera station north of Lake Tahoe in 2008; NPS characterizes the Yosemite observation as the second confirmed California detection in more than one hundred years.

That timeline matters: the 2023 sighting was not the first California detection since 1922, and it does not mean the species was extinct everywhere. The record concerns California, not the global status of wolverines.
What does one wolverine sighting actually mean?
It confirms an animal was present, not that a population has returned
A sighting can establish that an individual reached or occupied a place at a particular time. By itself, it cannot establish how long the animal stayed, whether it survived, or whether others were nearby. NPS did not report a resident Yosemite population or a breeding pair.

The animal’s movements and identity remain uncertain
NPS noted that recent observations in the Sierra Nevada might have involved the same individual. Its sex and origin were unknown in the agency’s account. A dispersing male was one possibility, not a confirmed identification, and the source does not establish the animal’s route or distance traveled.
Snowpack may have helped, but the cause is unproven
The region had record snowpack in the winter before the sighting. NPS suggested that conditions may have enabled the wolverine to travel farther south, but did not establish snowpack as the cause of its appearance.

What is a wolverine?
Wolverines are members of the weasel family and are adapted to travel extensively. NPS describes them as opportunistic feeders: they scavenge animals killed by predators such as wolves or bears, hunt, and excavate smaller prey. Young males sometimes explore hundreds of miles from their native range, but that general behavior does not tell us how far the Yosemite animal traveled.
The NPS Yosemite profile gives a length of 26–34 inches and a weight of 24–40 pounds. Those are the agency’s species figures on a page last updated September 22, 2025, not measurements of the individual seen in Yosemite.

What would it take for wolverines to recover in the Sierra Nevada?
One animal is not enough to establish a self-sustaining population. NPS explains that without a female companion and additional animals establishing territories, genetic diversity would remain low. The sighting is an encouraging sign of a wolverine’s presence, but it is not evidence of population recovery or a conservation release.

What did the National Park Service say?
The NPS account attributes this reaction to Tim Knaus: “Seeing the wolverine reminded me that Yosemite is a wild place and how many other incredible, wild and capable beings we share this place with.” The page does not state Knaus’s role.
The agency also wrote, “Whether this animal stays in the Sierra Nevada or roams back north and east, it’s an encouraging sight to see the intrepid wolverine return to its home in the Sierra Nevada.” That reflects the significance of the observation; it does not establish that the animal stayed or that a population was re-established.
