PerthNow named drone operator Lexo Aveleyra and quoted Olive’s owner, Sascha Green. Aveleyra said he put up the drone to understand what had happened and described the footage as “impressive because it’s not something you see every day.” Green said, “The thing that shocked me was how far it came out of the water.” Read the PerthNow account.

Why the 2025 report mentioned shark warnings
On 14 December 2025, two days before PerthNow published its story, SharkSmart WA issued a warning covering beaches, surf and dive spots between Mullaloo Beach and Hillarys Boat Harbour after increased sightings. It specifically named Mullaloo Beach, Whitford Beach, Pinnaroo Point and Hillarys Beach. The notice cautioned that sharks may be present along Western Australia’s coast throughout the year, urged extra care, and advised people to follow official closures. It did not provide a sighting count or a calculated risk estimate. See the 14 December 2025 warning.
That alert is historical context for the news report, not proof that the same warning remains active. As of 4 October 2026, SharkSmart’s live activity page listed a Perth metropolitan waters warning dated 1 October 2026. Alerts can change, so check current notices close to your visit rather than relying on an older article. Check SharkSmart’s current activity page and the SharkSmart WA app listing for official updates.

What the council said about beach signs
PerthNow reported that Olive’s owner called for warning signs at the beach. The outlet quoted the local council as saying it “considers signage to be unnecessary as people are generally aware that coastal waters are natural habitat for marine wildlife, including sharks”. This is the council’s position as reported by PerthNow; no primary council record was reviewed.

What dog owners can take from the encounter
- Check current SharkSmart alerts and local closure notices before heading to the coast; a past news report or warning cannot establish today’s conditions.
- Follow official closures and beach directions. The 2025 warning advised extra caution because sharks may be present in coastal waters throughout the year.
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police and give the location and details you can identify; do not approach wildlife to get a closer look or a better image.
- Do not treat drone footage, signs, or an app as a guarantee that a beach is free of sharks.
