Could you foster a dog or cat near Brands Hatch?
Battersea Dogs & Cats Home has centres in London, Brands Hatch in Kent, and Old Windsor in Berkshire. Its general requirement is to live within an hour’s drive of one of its sites; you do not necessarily need to live in Brands Hatch itself. Battersea also says foster carers must have no other pets at home and be willing to complete training.

Fostering gives some animals a home environment while they wait for a permanent home. Battersea prioritises dogs and cats who are stressed in kennels or catteries, have medical needs, or are too young to stay in those settings. The charity says its team matches each animal to a foster home according to the animal’s needs and the carer’s circumstances. You are not expected to accept a placement you are uncomfortable with.

Dog or cat fostering: which requirements fit your home?
The shared rules are only the starting point. Check the relevant species page carefully, since the time, space and household-age requirements differ.

What training and support does Battersea provide?
Battersea provides an online induction covering animal behaviour, body language, signs of stress and handling, along with further required learning modules. Its fostering overview says the charity provides the foster animal’s needs—including food, bedding, toys and veterinary care—and that fostering costs the carer nothing.

A Battersea appeal dated 10 November 2025 also described behaviour training and ongoing support for local foster carers, and asked applicants to have access to a car in case an animal needed veterinary attention. Because those details come from a dated local appeal, check Battersea’s current fostering information for arrangements that apply to a particular placement.

How to become a foster carer at Brands Hatch
- Read Battersea’s current fostering overview. It explains the programme and links to the separate dog and cat requirements.
- Check the right criteria for your household. Review the dog fostering page or cat fostering page, including the rules on children, time alone and room or garden access.
- Confirm the live application route and local need. Battersea’s pages and appeals may change; contact the charity through its current site to ask about Brands Hatch placements and the steps now required.
- Complete the training and discuss a suitable match. Battersea says its team considers both the animal’s needs and the carer’s circumstances. Raise any concerns before accepting a placement.
Battersea’s published pages establish the programme criteria and support, but do not provide a current dedicated application form or confirm live Brands Hatch demand. Use the current site to verify both rather than relying on older appeals.

In a press release dated 10 November 2025, Battersea said it directly cared for 2,766 dogs and 2,454 cats across its three centres in 2024. That release used Tom Jones, a seven-year-old greyhound at Brands Hatch who found kennel life stressful, as an example of a dog who benefited from enrichment while waiting for a home.

In a separate appeal dated 16 February 2026, Battersea said hundreds of animals had come into its care that year and described foster homes as useful for animals stressed by kennel life, needing medical care, or too young for a kennel environment. This is a dated statement, not a current total or confirmation that the appeal remains open. Brands Hatch foster carer Julie Webster said in that release: “I unfortunately am not in the position to own my own dog, so I applied to Battersea to become a foster carer and fostering dogs has given me a new lease of life!”
