Neither a covered nor an open litter box is best for every cat. Start with the roomiest box your cat can enter, turn around in, and use comfortably; then let observed use, cleanliness, and access determine whether a cover stays. Open boxes are easier to inspect and scoop, while a covered box can work well when it is genuinely spacious, accessible, and kept clean.
What the head-to-head evidence shows
The most direct comparison tested 28 domestic cats that had no recent history of elimination disorders. Each cat had exclusive access to one covered and one uncovered box for 14 days. The boxes were identical plastic storage tubs measuring 82.5 × 50.2 × 47.3 cm, filled with the same fine-grained clumping litter and scooped daily. Overall use did not differ significantly by box style.

| Result in the 28-cat comparison | What it means |
|---|---|
| 4 cats (15%) used the covered box significantly more | A clear covered-box preference occurred in a minority of this sample. |
| 4 cats (15%) used the uncovered box significantly more | An equally sized minority preferred the open design. |
| Most cats showed no significant preference | Large, clean boxes can make the cover itself a relatively unimportant variable for many cats. |
The authors summarized the finding this way: “Provided large boxes, using fine clumping litter and daily scooping, the majority of cats in our study did not exhibit a preference between covered and uncovered litter boxes.” Read the full study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.

The researchers intentionally used tubs larger than the commercial boxes available at the time so they could isolate the effect of the cover from the effect of cramped dimensions. A retail covered box may provide much less usable headroom or floor space. The cats were also not experiencing active house-soiling problems, and cats living together were separated during testing. Apply the findings to a healthy cat choosing between roomy, similarly maintained boxes—not automatically to a cat already avoiding the box or to every product sold as “large.”

A 2018 joint guideline from the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the International Society of Feline Medicine likewise reports that cats are about evenly divided in preference when the covered and uncovered boxes are large. It notes that regular cleaning may influence acceptance more than the presence of a cover and recommends an open design when possible because it makes monitoring and scooping easier. The guideline is available at AAFP/ISFM Guidelines for Diagnosing and Solving House-Soiling Behavior in Cats.
How to choose between the two styles
Choose an open box when monitoring and access come first
- You want to see urine clumps and feces quickly and remove them without disassembling a lid.
- Your cat is a kitten, elderly, stiff, recovering from surgery, or otherwise benefits from a low, unobstructed entry.
- You are troubleshooting a new problem and need to observe posture, digging, hesitation, or frequency of use.
- The available covered models are short, narrow, top-entry, or difficult to clean thoroughly.
An open box exposes waste to the room, so owners may notice odor sooner. That is a monitoring advantage as well as a housekeeping issue: waste can be removed promptly instead of remaining hidden under a hood. An open design does not eliminate odor; it simply does not confine it inside a cover.
Choose a covered box when the cat accepts it and the interior is truly roomy
- Your cat enters, turns, digs, squats, and exits without crouching against the roof or sides.
- The cover helps the box fit a household location or keeps waste less visible to people and other pets.
- You can remove the lid or open the access panels often enough to scoop and wash every surface.
- The entrance is easy to reach and the box is positioned so the cat cannot be cornered on the way in or out.
A hood can retain odors from the cat’s perspective. A cat that repeatedly approaches, sniffs, and backs away may be rejecting the trapped smell rather than the concept of a box. The cover also reduces usable volume: compare the interior floor and ceiling clearance, not the outside dimensions or a marketing label such as “jumbo.”
Size and posture matter more than the label
AAFP/ISFM guidance recommends a rectangular box about 1.5 times the cat’s nose-to-base-of-tail length. Measure the cat from the nose to the end of the body where the tail begins, then use that measurement to judge the box’s usable length. This is a guideline rather than a guarantee; a very tall cat, a cat that turns several times before squatting, or a cat that stands to urinate may need more room.

- Measure the interior from wall to wall and front to back. A thick rim, internal filter housing, or sloping hood can consume space.
- Check that the cat can stand, rotate, scratch, and adopt a normal elimination posture without touching the ceiling.
- For a cat that urinates while standing, a high-sided open box can contain spray. High sides should not create a high step-over for a cat with limited mobility.
- Use a low entry for kittens, older cats, and cats with arthritis or other mobility limitations. Do not assume a top-entry model is accessible simply because the floor pan is large.
The unusually large tubs in the 28-cat study are a useful reminder: “large” on a package does not mean the product matches the space those cats received.
Access, location, and household safety
A box must be easy to reach at the moment a cat needs it. Place it where the cat can approach and leave without passing a dog, another cat, a noisy appliance, or a dead-end corner. In a multi-pet home, provide options in separate, quiet locations rather than arranging every box in one cluster that a territorial cat can guard.
- Keep the route and entry clear; do not trap a cat behind a closed door or furniture.
- Avoid locations beside loud washers, furnaces, or frequently opening doors.
- Do not put food and water directly beside the box.
- For a covered model, leave enough clearance to lift the lid and clean it; an inaccessible box will not stay clean.
- Watch whether another pet waits near the entrance. A cat may dislike the location even when it accepts the box itself.
These placement principles apply to both styles. A well-sized box in a stressful location can fail, while a modestly styled box in a safe, quiet location may be used reliably.

Cleaning is a deciding factor
Daily scooping was part of the controlled comparison, and professional guidance identifies cleaning as a major influence on acceptance. Remove urine clumps and feces at least daily, refresh litter according to the litter manufacturer’s directions, and wash the pan when it becomes soiled or smells despite scooping. When you clean a covered box, wash the hood, door, seams, and filter area as well as the pan; residue hidden in a lip can keep the odor problem going.

Use unscented products unless your veterinarian has advised otherwise. Strong fragrance can make a box aversive even when people find the smell pleasant. If a cat stops using a box after a new litter or deodorizer is introduced, restore the previously accepted setup before changing box style again.
What a cover can and cannot do
A cover may hide waste from view and may limit visible litter around the room, which can be useful for household housekeeping. The available sources do not establish a universal or quantified reduction in litter scatter. A cover also does not neutralize waste; it can hold odor inside the cat’s enclosure and make owners slower to notice that scooping is overdue.
If odor is the concern, improve the cleaning routine and ventilation before assuming that a hood is required. If you use a covered box, inspect it from the cat’s level: a smell that seems mild at human height can be concentrated under the lid.

- Select comparable boxes. Make both as roomy as possible, with a similar amount and type of litter. Check interior dimensions and entry height rather than relying on product names.
- Use the same litter depth and cleaning schedule. Scoop both on the same schedule and wash them with the same method. Do not make one box noticeably dirtier or more strongly scented.
- Place them where access is equally safe. Avoid putting the covered box in a noisy or exposed location and the open box in the quietest room; location can overwhelm style.
- Keep the reliable box available. If your cat already uses one box consistently, do not remove it abruptly. Add the alternative beside or near it while preserving an escape route.
- Record behavior. Note entries, eliminations, hesitation, scratching, and whether the cat avoids one box after it has been cleaned. A simple date-and-box log is enough.
- Let repeated use decide. A single visit is not a preference. Look for a consistent pattern while both boxes remain equally clean and accessible.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s summary of the comparison also emphasizes testing the individual cat rather than assuming a universal answer; see its 2015 study summary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a cat may refuse a covered box
The interior is too small
A cat that bumps the roof, cannot turn, or must back out may avoid the box. Replace it with a longer, wider model or remove the hood and observe whether use returns.
The entrance is difficult or feels unsafe
High steps, a flap that brushes the back, a slippery ramp, or a location where another pet can block the doorway can all cause refusal. Try a low-entry open pan in a quiet location, particularly for kittens, older cats, or cats with mobility problems.
Odor has accumulated under the hood
Hidden residue, an overdue scoop, or a scented litter can make the enclosed air unpleasant. Empty and wash every component, dry it fully, use the previously accepted litter, and compare use with the lid removed.

The problem is not the box style
House-soiling can be linked to medical disease, aversion to the litter, aversion to the location, or a stressful environment. Cornell’s Feline Health Center explains these possibilities and recommends veterinary examination and appropriate tests for an identified cat with house-soiling; its guidance was updated in January 2015. Read Cornell’s house-soiling guide.
What to do when accidents start
- Arrange a veterinary assessment. Pain, urinary disease, gastrointestinal disease, mobility problems, and other medical conditions can change elimination behavior. A box swap is not a diagnosis.
- Document the pattern. Record urine versus feces, surface and location, frequency, posture, straining, vocalization, and any change in appetite or drinking. Bring the information to the appointment.
- Keep an accepted box in service. Add a new option rather than removing the only box the cat is using reliably.
- Review litter and location. Return to a previously accepted unscented litter, clean daily, and make sure the route is quiet and escape-safe.
- Follow the veterinary plan. Persistent cases may require medical treatment plus a broader behavior and environmental assessment; a qualified veterinary behavior professional can help after medical causes are addressed.
Seek prompt veterinary care for repeated straining, frequent attempts with little urine, blood, obvious pain, or a cat that cannot pass urine. Those signs can represent an urgent medical problem rather than a preference for open or covered equipment.
A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Best starting approach | Checks before committing |
|---|---|---|
| You want the easiest inspection and scooping | Spacious open box | Use a quiet location and a rim high enough to contain the cat’s normal posture. |
| Your cat already uses a roomy covered box comfortably | Keep the covered box | Confirm the cat can turn and stand normally; clean the pan, hood, seams, and any filter area frequently. |
| Your cat is a kitten, elderly, or mobility-limited | Low-entry open box | Ensure the step-over is easy and the route is free of obstacles. |
| Your large cat sprays over the edge while standing | Large open box with higher sides, if accessible | Preserve a low enough entry and enough interior length for a full turn. |
| You do not know which style your cat prefers | Offer both under comparable conditions | Keep litter, cleanliness, and location quality as similar as possible; log repeated use. |
| House-soiling has begun or persists | Veterinary assessment plus environmental review | Do not treat a cover change as the sole remedy; check health, litter, box dimensions, and location. |
Bottom line for “Should I get a covered or open litter box?”
Buy the largest, easiest-to-access box that fits your cat and your home, then prioritize the cat’s actual behavior. An open box is the straightforward default when observation, scooping, and low access matter. A covered box is a sound choice when the cat accepts it, the interior supports normal posture, and the enclosure is cleaned as diligently as an open pan. If the preference is uncertain, provide both and let consistent use—not a universal rule—make the decision.
