Start with the atmosphere you want to create, then judge the palette and décor in the room’s lighting and from a first-time visitor’s perspective.
Choose a palette for the atmosphere you want
The American Dental Association (ADA) treats color as an important part of practice design. Its guidance describes tranquil color combinations as a way to create a calm impression: shades of blue and green tend to feel relaxing, while bright, dominant red or yellow may create tension. These are design recommendations, not universal responses or evidence that a color treats dental anxiety. ADA guidance on choosing a color scheme

Evaluate color as part of the whole room. The ADA notes that perception depends on hue, value (lightness or darkness), and texture; lighting, furnishings, and the amount of visual contrast also affect how a scheme reads in context.

- For a more energetic impression: Brighter colors may feel cheerful, but a bold, dominant scheme can be visually intense. Balance it with the room’s other surfaces and furnishings.
Make the reception area welcoming from the doorway
The ADA advises looking at the reception area through a new patient’s eyes. Ask whether it feels orderly, comfortable, and cheerful, and whether its appearance is consistent with the quality and cleanliness patients expect from the practice. A pleasant reception room may help put patients at ease, but that is a design aim—not a guaranteed clinical result. ADA reception-area and office-decor guidance

Consider a larger landscape image, without promising an anxiety benefit
A 2019 outpatient exam-room experiment compared small, medium, and large landscape art images with a blank wall. In its 4 × 2 design, participants also experienced either a 10- or 45-minute wait. The large image had a more positive impact on most measured judgments than smaller art or the blank wall; longer waits were negatively evaluated and affected anxiety and perceived spaciousness. The study was not conducted in a dental office and does not show that large artwork reduces dental anxiety. PubMed record for the 2019 art-image study
For a reception area, this is a reason to consider whether one substantial landscape image fits the wall better than several small pieces or an empty wall—not a rule about what every patient will prefer. Choose art that suits the room’s scale and is practical to keep clean and in good condition.

What the dental studies do—and do not—show
Evidence from dental settings does not support presenting pleasant décor as an established anxiety treatment. A controlled trial by Lundberg and Srinivasan included 392 patients in a geriatric dental clinic. It found no effect of aquarium condition—no aquarium, a partially stocked aquarium, or an aquarium with fish—on blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety, or mood, although patients rated the fully stocked aquarium more positively in subjective experience. The specific population limits how widely the result can be generalized. PLOS ONE study of an aquarium in a dental waiting area (2021)

A 2023 study of operatory color in a committed-youth setting likewise reported no statistically significant reduction in anxiety. Its specialized setting limits generalization, and the record notes that possible clinical significance requires further study. It does not establish that color reliably lowers anxiety across patients. PubMed record for the 2023 study of operatory color and youth anxiety

Match the choice to the room, not a promise
When deciding between a quieter palette, brighter accents, or landscape art, weigh the intended atmosphere against the room’s lighting, furnishings, audience, upkeep, and visual scale. The ADA’s color recommendations are practical design guidance; the art-size finding comes from a non-dental experiment. Neither establishes a guaranteed emotional response or clinical outcome.
