Rabies Facts and Statistics: Global Risk, U.S. Cases, and What to Do

Rabies remains a major preventable cause of death worldwide, but human cases are rare in the United States because prevention and exposure response are widely available. The World Health Organization estimates about 59,000 people die from rabies each year globally; in contrast, the CDC documented 17 U.S. human cases over the ten years from 2015 through 2024. The figures measure different things—an annual global estimate and a U.S. surveillance total—and should not be compared as if they were collected the same way.

How many people die from rabies each year?

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that rabies causes about 59,000 deaths worldwide each year. This is an estimate, not a precise annual count: WHO notes that underreporting means documented cases do not capture the full burden. About 40% of rabies deaths are among children younger than 15. WHO also estimates that roughly 29 million people receive human rabies vaccine each year and that the disease costs about US$8.6 billion annually worldwide. These are global estimates reported in WHO’s 5 June 2024 rabies fact sheet.

Where is rabies most common?

Rabies remains a public-health problem in more than 150 countries and territories. About 95% of cases occur in Africa and Asia, according to WHO. The burden is especially tied to dog-mediated transmission in many affected regions. These global patterns differ from the United States, where wildlife—not dogs—is the main reservoir for animal rabies.

What animals spread rabies?

Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals. Infected animals can spread the virus through saliva, usually when a bite or scratch breaks the skin, or when saliva reaches the eyes, mouth, or another mucous membrane or an area of broken skin.

Worldwide: dogs are the main source of human infections

Dogs are responsible for up to 99% of human rabies cases globally, WHO reports. Children are particularly vulnerable to exposure, and many victims are younger than 15. Mass dog vaccination is therefore a central prevention strategy in regions where dog-mediated rabies persists.

United States: wildlife, especially bats

In the United States, more than 90% of reported animal rabies cases involve wild animals. Bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes are prominent sources, according to the CDC’s U.S. rabies overview dated 30 September 2025. Bats are the leading source of U.S.-acquired human rabies cases: a CDC report found bat contact in 35 of 42 cases reported from 2000 through 2024. That history makes possible bat exposure worth taking seriously, even when a bite is not obvious.

Why are U.S. human cases rare despite rabies in animals?

CDC documented 17 human rabies cases in the United States from 2015 through 2024; two of those infections were contracted abroad. Low human case counts do not mean rabies is absent from U.S. animals or that exposure response is rarely needed. CDC estimates that about 1.4 million people seek medical care each year after possible animal exposure and about 100,000 receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

These U.S. figures are surveillance totals and annual estimates, not the same kind of measurement as WHO’s estimated worldwide deaths. They show how prompt assessment and prevention can keep a disease present in animal populations from becoming a common human illness.

Can rabies be treated after a bite?

Rabies can be prevented after a possible exposure if appropriate care begins before symptoms develop. Once clinical symptoms appear, the disease is almost always fatal. WHO describes it as fatal in 100% of cases after the virus infects the central nervous system and symptoms begin. Do not wait for symptoms to seek advice.

PEP is medically directed care. WHO describes it as thorough wound washing, a course of human rabies vaccine, and rabies immunoglobulin when indicated. For people who have never been vaccinated against rabies, CDC describes PEP as wound washing, human rabies immune globulin at the first visit, and rabies vaccine. The recommended response depends on details such as the animal, location, circumstances of contact, and prior vaccination. A clinician or public-health professional should assess the exposure.

What should I do if a bat was in my room?

Contact a clinician or local or state public-health department promptly and explain that a bat was in the room. Do not decide on your own that there was—or was not—an exposure: public-health professionals can assess the circumstances and advise whether PEP is needed. CDC identifies bat contact as the leading source of U.S.-acquired human rabies cases and notes the importance of assessment after possible bat contact. A possible encounter calls for professional evaluation; it does not mean every bat-in-room situation automatically requires PEP.

For any possible contact with an animal that could have rabies, seek urgent medical or public-health advice rather than waiting to see whether symptoms appear. CDC’s Clinical Overview of Rabies says patients with possible exposure should be assessed by public-health professionals.

How can rabies be prevented?

  • Vaccinate dogs at scale. WHO identifies mass dog vaccination as a way to stop transmission at its source.
  • Get prompt exposure care. Thorough wound washing and quality-assured PEP can prevent disease before symptoms begin.
  • Build awareness. Knowing how rabies spreads and where to seek help supports timely action for people and communities.

These measures complement animal surveillance and local public-health response. For pets, ask a veterinarian about rabies vaccination requirements and schedules in your area.

What recent U.S. rabies signal should readers know about?

A CDC Health Alert Network advisory dated 10 September 2026 reported 17% more rabies-related inquiries to CDC in July–August 2026 than in the same period of 2025. At least eight state health departments also reported increased PEP use, PEP administration errors, or both. The 17% figure compares inquiries, not rabies infections; it is not evidence that rabies incidence rose by 17%. The advisory is a reminder to use professional guidance for possible exposure and PEP decisions.
