Calcite crystals—not a baby dinosaur or bones—were found on the inner eggshell of one fossil egg from China. The eggs come from the Qianshan Basin in Anhui Province and were described in a scientific paper published in 2022, not newly discovered in 2025.
What was found inside the fossil eggs?
The crystals are calcite on the inner surface of an eggshell fragment from specimen QS-01. The study authors wrote: “The inner surface of the eggshell fragment of QS-01 is covered by a calcite crystal layer and individual calcite crystals are evident.” That describes crystals coating the shell’s inside—not an egg containing a preserved embryo or a nest of crystals.

The paper does not report quartz. Its findings concern calcite crystals associated with the eggshell.

How many eggs were reported?
The researchers reported three discovered eggs. Two were preserved in the Geological Museum of Tianzhu Mountain World Geopark; the third was lost and, according to the paper, still in the process of collection. The preserved fossils are QS-01, which is incomplete and has the calcite crystals, and QS-02, which is more complete.

What does the find tell us—and what does it not?
The fossils document a named egg type from the Qianshan Basin and calcite crystals on the interior shell of one specimen. They do not establish which dinosaur species laid the eggs, and the study does not report a baby dinosaur or bones inside them.
For context, the paper’s 2022 introduction says approximately 16 oofamilies and 35 oogenera had been reported in China. That is a background figure cited by the authors, not a current census.
