The claim that a spider spun red fluorescent silk is not a verified scientific finding. A 2025 paper reported the result in the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum, but the journal later retracted it after the authors could not confirm that the intended genetic changes had occurred at the targeted locations in the genome.
What did the paper claim?
The paper described using CRISPR-Cas9 to make knock-out and knock-in mutations in offspring of the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum. It reported inserting a sequence for a red fluorescent protein into a silk gene and claimed that the resulting silk fibers fluoresced red. Those statements describe the paper’s original claims; they are not independently verified results. Wiley’s record of the paper now labels it retracted.

A University of Bayreuth announcement published before the retraction described injecting unfertilized female spider eggs with a solution containing CRISPR components and the red fluorescent protein sequence, then mating the spiders. It said offspring showed fluorescence in dragline silk. That announcement is historical context, not confirmation: the subsequent retraction means the reported outcome cannot be treated as established.

In its retraction notice, Wiley said the authors could not confirm that either the knock-out (KO) or knock-in (KI) occurred at the intended place in the genome. The notice concluded that the study’s results could not be verified and the article therefore had to be retracted. Read the Wiley retraction notice.

This is the central distinction: the paper made a claim about engineered spiders and fluorescent silk, but the retraction says the genetic changes underpinning that claim could not be confirmed at their intended genomic locations. The result is unverified; the paper does not establish that the spider produced the reported silk.
How the claim changed over time
- April 13, 2025: Wiley lists the original paper as first published online.
- May 8, 2025: A University of Bayreuth announcement carried by Phys.org presented the work as the first application of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing in spiders and described the claimed red fluorescent silk. It was published before the retraction.
- August 21, 2025: Wiley first published the retraction notice.
- September 26, 2025: The retraction record gives this as its issue date in Angewandte Chemie International Edition.
The announcement’s “world’s first” framing referred to the experiment as it was then being reported. In light of the retraction, it should not be repeated as a confirmed scientific milestone. The announcement remains available via Phys.org’s reproduction of the University of Bayreuth announcement.
