Desensitising Your Dog to Loud Noises: A Safe Training Plan

Pair a quiet version of the noise with a valued reward, increase intensity only while your dog stays relaxed, and make a separate safety plan for real storms and fireworks.

Desensitise your dog by pairing a very quiet version of the noise with something they enjoy, then gradually increase the volume only while they remain relaxed. If your dog tenses, shows fear, cannot settle, or stops taking the reward, lower or stop the sound. Never force them to endure a frightening noise. Recordings can help with practice, but they do not recreate every cue in a real storm or fireworks display.

What desensitisation involves

Desensitisation means introducing a trigger at an intensity low enough that it does not provoke fear, then increasing it gradually. Counterconditioning is pairing that trigger with something the dog values, such as food, so the noise predicts a positive experience. The two approaches are commonly used together. AAHA’s behavior guidelines distinguish these methods from flooding: keeping a dog exposed to a frightening level of a trigger. Flooding should be avoided because it can worsen fear and harm welfare.

How to train with a sound recording

  1. Identify what your dog fears. Note the sounds and situations that cause a reaction, and what your dog does. Thunder may not be the only trigger: a storm-sensitive dog can also react to rain, wind, flashes, dark skies, or changes in air pressure. A recording may not represent all of these cues.
  2. Set up a familiar, calm place. First practise settling there without the noise. Choose a reward your dog values, such as a small treat, chew, or food toy. A mat can serve as a familiar settling spot, but no special equipment is required.
  3. Start below the fear threshold. Play an appropriate recording so quietly that your dog remains at ease. Pair the sound with the reward. Keep the first exposure brief and watch your dog rather than relying on a particular volume setting: speakers, rooms, and dogs differ.
  4. Increase gradually and flexibly. When your dog remains relaxed during practice, raise the volume by a small amount. Progress is not a fixed ladder or a schedule; varying intensity while making an overall gradual upward trend can be more appropriate than turning it up at every session. Allow your dog’s response to determine the pace.
  5. Step back at signs of discomfort. Tension, fear, inability to settle, or losing interest in the reward means the sound is too difficult. Stop or reduce it, give your dog a chance to recover, and resume later at an easier level. Do not try to push through a reaction.
  6. Get help if progress is difficult. A veterinarian can assess severe or unmanageable fear, worsening symptoms, stalled progress, or whether medication may be appropriate. An appropriately qualified behavior professional can help tailor the exposure steps and timing to your dog.

There is no guaranteed timetable. VCA notes that some programs take several weeks, but that is not a promise or deadline; individual progress varies. Once your dog can remain calm, maintain practice rather than assuming the response will automatically carry over to every real event.

What recordings can—and cannot—do

Recordings let you control sound intensity and duration, making them useful for gradual practice. They cannot reproduce all the conditions of a thunderstorm or fireworks event. Storms can include rain, wind, flashes, dark skies, and pressure changes, while fireworks happen in an environment that a recording cannot fully recreate. Merck notes that controlled sound exposure alone seldom resolves multisensory phobias completely. A dog that stays calm during a recording may still be frightened by the real event, so training and event-day management have separate roles.

Help your dog through a real storm or fireworks display

  • Prepare a safe place before the noise starts. Use a familiar interior room with bedding. A crate is suitable only if your dog already finds it safe; confinement can be dangerous if a panicking dog tries to escape.
  • Reduce sound and visual cues where practical. Choose a quieter room, close windows or curtains as appropriate, and use white noise or music to mask some of the noise.
  • Offer food only if your dog can engage comfortably. A long-lasting treat or food toy may help, but do not insist if fear prevents your dog from eating.
  • Prevent escapes. Keep your dog indoors, secure exits, and check collar identification and microchip details. Take outdoor breaks before predictable noise begins. If your dog must go outside after it starts, use a leash even in a fenced yard.
  • Stay calm and avoid punishment. Fearful behavior is not misbehavior to punish. For severe or predictable events, discuss a plan with your veterinarian in advance. If medication is prescribed, Cornell recommends trying it on a quiet day and giving it early enough to work.

Choosing the right kind of support

Recordings, practical management, and veterinary care address different parts of the problem and can be combined. Controlled recordings help build tolerance to sound when there is time to train; a quiet safe space and escape prevention reduce risk during an actual event. If fear is severe, involves several storm cues, or makes training impractical, veterinary assessment is an important part of the plan. Medication, when a veterinarian considers it appropriate, is not a substitute for keeping the dog safe and reducing frightening exposure.
