Help your new puppy or dog settle by making the first days quiet, safe and predictable. Set up a peaceful place to rest, keep familiar food and routines where possible, give the dog time to explore at its own pace, and arrange a veterinary check with any health records you have. There is no universal settling timetable: age, health, temperament and past experience all affect how quickly a dog adjusts.
Before your dog comes home
A little preparation can make the first hours less overwhelming. Ask the breeder, rescue, shelter or previous guardian about the dog’s food, daily routine, toileting habits, medical history and known fears. If possible, bring a familiar blanket or bedding, especially for a puppy.

- Prepare a quiet, draught-free resting place, plus separate food and water spots.
- Remove hazards such as accessible electrical cords and poisonous items.
- Have a collar, leash and ID tag ready, and plan safe transport home.
- Arrange a veterinary examination soon after arrival. Bring vaccination and deworming records if available.
- If you have other pets, prepare separate beds and water bowls and a way to give each animal space.
The AVMA recommends preparing the home, gathering supplies and arranging veterinary care as part of choosing and bringing home a dog: Selecting a pet dog.

Keep the welcome low-key and limit visitors at first. Let the dog explore a small, safe area at its own pace, and make sure it can retreat to an undisturbed resting place. Avoid forcing contact with people or other pets; calm, positive exposure is more useful than an exhausting round of introductions.

Start a steady daily rhythm for meals, toilet opportunities, walks or age-appropriate activity, play and sleep. For a puppy, ask what food and routine it already knows, and continue them initially where feasible. The RSPCA’s puppy guidance covers dogs from 6 weeks to 12 months and discusses preparing for the 8–12-week arrival stage: Caring for your puppy.
Give the dog breaks between new experiences. If it is not fully vaccinated, ask your veterinarian how to balance safe socialization with local infection risks before choosing places to visit.
Set up a comfortable place to rest
A crate is optional, not a requirement. Some dogs like having a den-like resting space; others find confinement stressful. A gated room or another dog-safe area can be a better choice if your dog cannot relax in a crate.

If you choose a crate, introduce it gradually and positively, using food or treats so the dog can explore it voluntarily. Watch the dog’s response rather than assuming that distress is something it must endure. The RSPCA explains gradual crate training in How to crate train a puppy; the ASPCA describes alternatives for dogs who become distressed in a crate in its guidance on separation anxiety. A crate should not be used to shut a dog away all day while you work.
Build a toilet routine without punishment
Take your dog to its toilet area often, especially after waking, eating and playing. Supervise closely indoors so you can notice when it needs to go, and praise it when it toilets in the right place. If you find an accident after it has happened, clean it up without scolding; punishment after the fact does not teach the dog what to do instead.
Puppies need frequent opportunities and close supervision. An adult dog may also need time to learn a new household’s routine. The ASPCA notes that there is no sure-fire house-training timetable that works for every dog in House Training Your Dog or Puppy. The RSPCA also provides advice on dog toilet training.

Introduce resident pets carefully
Keep initial introductions calm, supervised and brief enough that both animals can cope. Give each pet separate resting and feeding resources, and make sure each has a way to take a break. A baby gate can help manage puppy-to-dog introductions; remove toys and food from the meeting area to reduce avoidable conflict.

How long does it take a new dog to settle?
There is no fixed number of days. Some dogs adjust quickly; others need more time to feel comfortable. The ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” is a rough adoption heuristic: it describes possible nervousness during the first three days and decompression and early settling over the following three weeks. It is not a guarantee or a deadline, and individual dogs may take a different amount of time. See the ASPCA’s Adoption Tips.
For a puppy, the extra demands of housetraining, socialization, feeding and supervision can make the transition particularly hands-on. Adult or adopted dogs may have established habits, limited known history or a toileting routine to relearn; tailor the pace to the individual dog rather than expecting a particular milestone by a particular date.

When to ask for help
Contact your veterinarian about health concerns, diet changes, parasite control, vaccinations or possible infection exposure. If your dog panics when left alone, remains persistently fearful, guards resources or behaves aggressively, do not rely on waiting it out. A veterinarian or qualified behavior professional can help identify an appropriate next step. This general settling-in advice is not a substitute for individualized veterinary or behavior guidance.
