The Devon Rex is a small-to-medium cat with a short, soft, wavy coat, oversized ears and an unusually interactive personality. This is not a cat that simply occupies the house: most Devons want to follow people, climb on them, play with them and investigate whatever is happening.

They are often a good match for households seeking an affectionate, intelligent companion, provided someone can offer daily attention and enrichment. Their coat is relatively easy to maintain, but the breed is not hairless, non-shedding or genuinely hypoallergenic. Prospective owners should also ask breeders for meaningful health documentation, particularly cardiac screening and the COLQ test associated with congenital myasthenic syndrome.

History and origin

The modern Devon Rex began in Buckfastleigh, Devon, England. In 1960, Beryl Cox found that a stray cat she owned had produced a curly-coated male kitten. She named him Kirlee. His father was believed to be a feral curly-coated tom, and Kirlee became the foundation of the breed.

The Devon Rex is not simply a variant of the Cornish Rex. Although both breeds have unusual curly or wavy coats, they developed from different foundation cats and have distinct coat characteristics and body types.

Appearance

Devons have a distinctive, almost pixie-like expression. Typical features include a modified-wedge-shaped head, prominent cheekbones, a short muzzle, large eyes and very large ears set low on the head. Their bodies are muscular and flexible, with hind legs longer than the forelegs, giving them an agile, athletic outline.

The coat is short, soft and wavy rather than long and curly. Its texture comes partly from modified guard hairs and a sparse undercoat. Coat density and waviness can differ considerably between individual cats. A kitten may lose much of its coat at around three months, then develop a fuller adult coat over the following months. A temporarily sparse kitten coat is not automatically a sign of illness.

Devons usually shed less than many other cats, but they still shed. Owners may notice fine hairs or a light “lint” on bedding and favorite resting places.

Devon Rex personality and behavior

This breed is typically people-oriented, curious, playful and physically affectionate. A Devon may follow family members from room to room, perch on a shoulder, settle on a lap or insert itself into a household activity. Many remain highly playful well into adulthood.

Intelligence and curiosity are useful traits when directed into appropriate activities. Food puzzles, clicker training, interactive toys, fetch and climbing structures can all help. Rotate toys rather than leaving every toy available all the time; novelty often makes a familiar toy interesting again.

Devons can become unhappy or destructive when routinely left alone for long periods. That does not mean every individual requires constant physical contact, but the breed generally does best with dependable social interaction. A home with another compatible cat or a cat-friendly dog may suit some Devons, although introductions must be gradual and the other animal’s temperament matters more than the label “cat-friendly.”

Grooming and everyday care

Coat care

Many Devon Rex cats need only minimal coat maintenance. A gentle hand pass or light brushing is usually enough to remove loose hair. Aggressive brushing can break the delicate coat or irritate the skin, so a stiff brush and repeated grooming sessions are poor choices.

The reduced undercoat can make natural skin oils more visible. Mild oiliness may occur, but persistent greasiness, redness, scaling, itching, odor, hair loss or recurring sores should be assessed by a veterinarian. Repeated baths or home remedies may worsen an underlying skin problem.

Ears

The large ears can collect oily material and debris. Check them regularly and clean only when they are visibly dirty, using a veterinarian-approved product and the technique your veterinary team recommends. Do not routinely push cotton swabs into the ear canal.

Claws and teeth

Trim the claws about weekly if needed. Start when the cat is young, handle one paw at a time and reward cooperation. A scratching post remains important even when claws are trimmed.

Dental care should include regular brushing with cat-safe toothpaste. Ordinary dry food does not reliably prevent dental disease. If a Devon resists brushing, ask a veterinarian about alternatives and schedule oral examinations as part of routine preventive care.

Food and water

Some Devons are enthusiastic eaters and can gain excess weight if food is left out without limits. Measure portions and adjust calories for age, activity, reproductive status and body condition. Your veterinarian can help determine whether the cat is lean, overweight or at a healthy weight.

Offer fresh water every day. A fountain can encourage drinking if a particular cat prefers moving water, but it is optional rather than essential.

Exercise and enrichment

A Devon Rex needs more than a food bowl and a soft bed. Provide vertical space such as a secure cat tree, shelves or window perches, along with opportunities to chase, pounce and solve problems. Several short play sessions are often more effective than expecting one long session.

  1. Use a wand toy for supervised chase and jumping games.
  2. Provide puzzle feeders or hide small portions of the daily ration around safe areas.
  3. Teach simple behaviors such as touching a target, coming when called or retrieving a toy.
  4. Give the cat a quiet retreat where children and other pets cannot disturb it.
  5. Inspect climbing equipment regularly for loose parts or unstable bases.

Because Devons are social and have relatively little undercoat, many also seek warm sleeping spots. Keep heated beds and heating pads properly designed for pets and prevent access to unsafe heaters or exposed cords.

Health concerns

The Devon Rex is generally considered a healthy breed, but no pedigree or mixed-breed cat is free from inherited and acquired disease. Routine veterinary examinations, vaccination decisions tailored to lifestyle, parasite prevention and dental care all remain important.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, causes thickening of the heart muscle. It may be clinically silent for some time. A veterinarian may hear a murmur, but a normal physical examination does not rule out HCM.

Echocardiography is the definitive imaging method used to assess feline cardiomyopathy. If buying a kitten, ask whether both breeding parents have documented, appropriately timed echocardiograms performed or interpreted by a veterinary cardiologist. A “clear” DNA panel cannot by itself rule out every possible cause of HCM in Devon Rex cats, so genetic testing does not replace cardiac imaging.

Congenital myasthenic syndrome

The condition historically called Devon myopathy or “spasticity” is associated with a mutation in the COLQ gene and is now called Sphynx and Devon Rex congenital myasthenic syndrome, or CMS. It is autosomal recessive:

Genetic result Expected implication
Two normal copies Not affected and not a carrier for the tested mutation
One mutated copy Carrier; generally unaffected
Two mutated copies At risk of developing CMS

Signs may begin at around three weeks of age and can include weakness brought on by exercise or excitement and a “dog-begging” or “chipmunk” posture. Severe disease can interfere with swallowing and lead to choking or aspiration pneumonia. Breeders should be willing to provide the actual CMS results for both parents, not just a verbal assurance that their line is healthy.

Other reported concerns

Depending on the family line and registry, breeders and veterinarians may also discuss skin disease, patellar luxation, dental disease and polycystic kidney disease screening. These are potential concerns, not conditions that every Devon Rex will develop.

Choosing or adopting a Devon Rex

Whether you find a kitten through a breeder or an adult through a rescue, evaluate the individual cat’s health and behavior rather than choosing on appearance alone. A responsible breeder should provide clear answers and records before asking for a commitment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ask for registration and pedigree information from a recognized cat association.
  2. Review the kitten’s veterinary examination, vaccination and parasite-control records.
  3. Request parent-specific COLQ CMS test results.
  4. Request documented HCM echocardiography for the breeding parents, including dates and the examining professional’s credentials.
  5. Read a written contract covering health guarantees, return provisions and spay/neuter or breeding terms.
  6. Look for evidence that kittens are raised with ordinary household sounds, handling and appropriate socialization.
  7. Ask what food, litter and routine the kitten already knows so the transition is less disruptive.

The Cat Fanciers’ Association notes that blood type B occurs at a relatively high frequency in the Devon Rex gene pool. Blood-type testing is therefore relevant to breeding management and should be discussed by anyone planning a breeding program.

Are Devon Rex cats hypoallergenic?

No. Devon Rex cats produce cat allergens like other cats. Some allergy sufferers tolerate a particular Devon better than a particular long-haired or heavily shedding cat, but the breed is not allergen-free. Allergic reactions vary between people and between individual cats.

Before adopting, spend meaningful time with the specific cat in an indoor environment if possible. Do not rely on a claim that the breed is “hypoallergenic.”

Common misconceptions

Claim What is more accurate
“Devon Rex cats do not shed.” They usually shed lightly, but they still shed.
“They are hypoallergenic.” They produce cat allergens; individual allergy responses vary.
“The coat needs no care.” It generally needs little brushing, but ears, skin, claws and teeth still need attention.
“A clear HCM DNA test proves the cat cannot get HCM.” DNA testing does not replace echocardiographic screening of breeding cats.
“The Devon Rex is hairless or identical to the Cornish Rex.” It has its own short, wavy coat with modified guard hairs and little undercoat.

FAQ

Are Devon Rex cats good family pets?

They can be excellent family pets for households that want an affectionate, active cat. They are usually social and playful, but children must handle them gently and give them a quiet place to retreat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much grooming does a Devon Rex need?

Usually very little coat brushing. Use a gentle hand pass or light brush, check the ears for oily buildup, trim claws as needed and brush the teeth regularly. Avoid aggressive brushing and unnecessary bathing.

Do Devon Rex cats shed?

Yes. They generally shed less than many cats because of their short coat and sparse undercoat, but they are not non-shedding or hypoallergenic.

What health tests should a Devon Rex breeder provide?

Ask for parent-specific COLQ testing for congenital myasthenic syndrome and documented HCM echocardiography for both breeding parents. Also review veterinary records, the contract and the kitten’s examination history.

The Bottom Line

The Devon Rex suits people who want an involved companion rather than an independent, low-interaction cat. Expect daily play, climbing, companionship and routine ear, claw, dental and skin care. The coat is low-maintenance but not allergen-free, and a careful buyer should verify CMS results and cardiac echocardiography rather than relying on breed reputation or vague health claims.
