No: the animals Colossal Biosciences announced are genetically edited gray wolves, not dire wolves restored unchanged from extinction. The company says it used ancient dire-wolf DNA to guide 20 edits to gray-wolf cells, producing animals intended to show selected traits of the extinct species. That is a significant biotechnology claim, but it does not make the dinosaur premise of Jurassic Park real.
What did Colossal announce?
Colossal Biosciences said three animals were born from its dire-wolf project: Romulus and Remus in October 2024, followed by Khaleesi in January 2025. The company made the project public in April 2025, months after the first reported births. These dates and the company’s account of the animals’ creation come from Colossal’s project announcement.

According to Colossal, its team used ancient DNA to map the dire-wolf genome and made 20 genetic edits to gray-wolf cells. The University of California describes the animals as genetically modified gray wolves with traits associated with the extinct species, and calls the result “dire wolf 2.0.” UC Santa Cruz’s coverage and the University of California’s explanation both frame the animals as altered gray wolves, rather than unchanged dire wolves.
Are these real dire wolves?
They are real animals, but “dire wolf” is not a precise description of their biological starting point. The most accurate shorthand is genetically edited gray-wolf proxies intended to express selected dire-wolf traits. Colossal calls the work de-extinction; other scientists question whether editing a living relative to resemble an extinct animal amounts to bringing that species back.

- Welcome to the finest collection series: This is a collection series of very delicate, very beautiful prehistoric animals that are both toys and the best collection on display and gift.
The distinction matters because editing selected features does not recover an extinct animal’s complete genome, development, behavior, or ecological role. A University of California account describes the gray-wolf genome as altered to resemble its extinct relative. Independent coverage records disagreement about whether that makes the result a de-extinct dire wolf. For example, Scientific American reports skepticism about the claim, while the Associated Press covers the limits of what current de-extinction efforts can establish.
The company’s description of its methods is not the same as an independent technical audit. Institutional coverage confirms that gray wolves were modified, but a peer-reviewed methods paper for this exact project is not established in the sources available here. Treat the number of edits and the precise process as Colossal’s account, not as independently verified technical findings.

Why do scientists disagree about “de-extinction”?
The disagreement is about what counts as bringing a species back. One view emphasizes whether genetic engineering can produce an animal with recognizable features of an extinct species. A stricter view asks whether the result is that species itself, including its full inherited biology and the behaviors and ecological relationships that cannot be reconstructed simply by changing selected genes.
Evolutionary geneticist Tom Gilbert, a scientific adviser to Colossal, gave Scientific American a pointed assessment of the animals’ appearance: “There is no chance in hell a dire wolf is going to look like that.” That is Gilbert’s skeptical view, not a consensus statement. In the Associated Press, University at Buffalo biologist Vincent Lynch described the limits he sees in such efforts: “All you can do now is make something look superficially like something else”. These comments illustrate why the label remains contested; neither quote alone settles the scientific question.

Live Science reports that Colossal chief science officer Beth Shapiro characterized the animals as gray wolves with 20 modified genes. That framing is consistent with describing them as engineered proxies, while the company’s use of “de-extinction” makes a broader claim about what the project represents.

No. The Jurassic Park comparison is a dramatic way to evoke the idea of extinct animals returning, not an accurate description of what this project did. The reported work concerns editing a living canid relative using selected information from ancient dire-wolf DNA. It does not involve extracting intact dinosaur DNA or recreating dinosaurs.

It is also important not to confuse a genetic resemblance with a full reconstruction. Even if an engineered animal displays selected traits associated with an extinct species, that does not establish that its behavior, physiology, or ecological role matches the extinct animal’s. The dire-wolf project therefore does not demonstrate that the fictional dinosaur-recreation premise of Jurassic Park has become reality.

Colossal presents its work as a biotechnology advance with possible conservation applications. The company’s education page discusses potential conservation value, but potential technology benefits are not evidence that these particular animals can restore a lost ecosystem.
Questions remain about how animals with selected traits would behave, what care they would need, and whether their traits would be suitable in any present-day habitat. TIME has raised ecological and behavioral questions, including the challenge of relating an animal to prey and environments that may no longer exist: TIME’s coverage. The sources cited here do not establish that the edited wolves have been released into the wild or that they can restore a former ecosystem.
