What the Pyramiden polar bear video reportedly shows
PerthNow published its account on 30 April 2025, describing an encounter filmed the previous month in Pyramiden, Svalbard. The report says eyewitness Rebecca Baack was staying at a hotel for a ski expedition and recorded the scene from her balcony.

According to the outlet’s description, a man appeared to try to scare off the polar bear by firing a rifle. He ran over a wall through deep snow toward a nearby snowmobile, dropped the rifle just before the bear reached him, then rode away as the bear followed for a time. These are details reported from the video, not an independently confirmed official account of the incident. PerthNow’s 30 April 2025 report.
What is not established about the encounter
- The report does not name the man or verify that he was Norwegian.
- It does not establish why the rifle was fired or whether the bear was struck.
- No exact filming date, official incident investigation, injury report, or outcome for the bear is established by the published account.
Why Svalbard’s safety rules are not general advice
The Governor of Svalbard says, “Due to the polar bear threat on Svalbard, anyone travelling outside the settlements must be equipped with suitable means of scaring off polar bears.” The guidance recommends firearms, while loaded firearms may not be carried in Longyearbyen’s settlement area.
