There’s no established evidence that cats lick themselves after being petted specifically to remove a person’s scent. The timing may be coincidental, or the touch may have drawn the cat’s attention to an itchy or sensitive spot. Stress-related grooming is another possibility. A single episode can’t tell you which explanation applies.
Why a cat may groom after you pet it
Three explanations are plausible, but none can be diagnosed from timing alone. Notice where and how long your cat licks, how often it happens, and how the cat responds to touch.

1. It may simply be routine coat grooming
Cats groom regularly, so a grooming session that starts after petting may just happen to coincide with the cat’s usual routine. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored overview estimates that cats spend about two to five hours a day licking their fur. That is an estimate from that source, not a universal threshold or a way to judge whether an individual cat’s grooming is normal.
2. Touch may bring attention to itch or discomfort
A pet or scratch can draw a cat’s attention to an area that feels itchy, sensitive, or painful. Cats differ in how much handling they enjoy. Watch for licking, biting, scratching, or pulling away when you touch a particular area; an unusual response may point to sensitivity or discomfort. Persistent or focused licking warrants more attention than a brief grooming episode.

3. Licking may be soothing or stress-related
Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes licking as a possible displacement behavior: grooming can help a cat settle in a stressful situation or amid change. That makes stress one possible explanation, not a diagnosis based on a single brief episode. Consider whether the behavior occurs alongside changes in the cat’s surroundings or routine.
What scent behavior does—and does not—tell us
Cats use scent in social communication. AAFP/ISFM guidance notes that cats rub against caregivers to mark scent and show familiarity, and the Merck Veterinary Manual describes grooming as an affiliative display. Those behaviors make scent relevant to how cats interact; they do not show that a cat’s self-licking after petting is an attempt to erase a person’s scent.

The available sources do not quantify how often cats groom immediately after a person pets them, or establish that scent removal is the motive. Treat that explanation as speculation rather than a proven account of what your cat is doing.
When post-petting grooming deserves attention
Look at the pattern rather than one isolated lick. Note the frequency and duration, the body area involved, the condition of the skin and coat, and whether grooming disrupts eating, play, or sleep. Also watch your cat’s body language during petting: pulling away or reacting sharply to touch can help identify a sensitive area.

- Ask a veterinarian for advice if licking is excessive or persistent, repeatedly focused on one area, or accompanied by hair loss, redness, or sores.
- Seek advice if grooming interferes with normal activities or if your cat shows signs of pain or distress.
These signs do not establish a cause on their own, but they are reasons to have the behavior assessed rather than assume it is about your scent.

Published estimates vary. PetMD’s 2025 overview gives about two to five hours per day; a 2025 review in the Merck Veterinary Manual says cats groom 15% of the day. Cornell’s Feline Health Center quotes Pamela Perry, D.V.M., as saying cats groom 30–50% of the day; the page reviewed does not supply a publication year for that figure. These figures come from different sources and should not be combined into a single measurement or treated as a clinical cutoff for an individual cat.
