Yes. Most koi have visible scales across much of their bodies, but coverage varies by type. Doitsu koi have scales only in limited areas, and leather koi may have very few or no visible scales. A smooth-looking koi can still be a normal scale-pattern type.
Why most koi have scales
Koi are domesticated ornamental carp. Carp typically have large scales, though some carp forms have reduced scale coverage. The NSW Department of Primary Industries describes this variation, including mirror and leather forms, in its general information about carp. How koi scale patterns differ
Scale coverage and scale appearance are separate features. A koi may have scales over most of its body, only in certain rows or areas, or very few visible scales; some scales may also be especially reflective.

These descriptions follow the pattern terms summarized by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association in its pond fish keeping guidance and the scale-cover categories in a University of Waikato thesis. Terminology can differ: leather koi are also described as “naked.” Ginrin refers to reflective scales, not a scaleless condition.

Where scales sit and what covers them
Koi scales are embedded in the skin rather than sitting on it like separate shells. A koi-specific histological study published in the University of Peradeniya proceedings in 2025 describes scales in dermal pockets anchored by collagen fibers. Fish skin and scales are generally covered by a protective mucus layer, as explained by the University of Florida IFAS Extension in How Ornamental Fishes Get Their Color.
What a smooth-looking koi means
Limited or nearly absent visible scales can reflect a Doitsu or leather scale pattern. Appearance alone does not establish whether a koi is healthy, and scale pattern should not be used by itself to judge health.
