Can Betta Fish Live with Catfish? Corydoras Compatibility and Care

Corydoras can sometimes live with bettas, but compatibility is conditional. Learn what to check about species, space, water, feeding, and behavior.

Sometimes—but the answer depends on the catfish species and the individual betta. Care guides identify Corydoras, particularly small or dwarf species, as possible companions in a peaceful, suitably sized aquarium. They do not establish that catfish in general are safe tank mates. A betta may still chase or attack a Corydoras, so plan for separation if the fish do not tolerate one another.

Which catfish can live with a betta?

The compatibility advice here applies to Corydoras catfish, not every fish sold or described as a catfish. Aqueon includes Corydoras among possible tank mates in a larger, peaceful community aquarium, while Fluval specifically points to small or dwarf Corydoras. Both sources caution, in effect, that a possible match is not a guarantee: betta temperament varies, and a particular fish may chase or attack tank mates (Aqueon; Fluval).

Do not assume another catfish species will share Corydoras’ suitability. Before choosing any catfish, check its adult size, group needs, behavior, feeding requirements, temperature range, and space needs against the aquarium and the betta’s requirements. The cited care guidance does not support ranking or recommending other catfish species.

What conditions make a Corydoras pairing more likely to work?

Choose a suitable aquarium, not just a compatible-sounding fish

Aquarium Co-Op discusses betta tank mates in a 10–20 gallon aquarium with plenty of cover and live plants. That is general context for its suggested tank mates, not a universal minimum for every betta–Corydoras pairing. The space needed depends on the Corydoras species, group size, aquarium footprint, and other occupants; the available guidance does not establish one minimum volume for all combinations (Aquarium Co-Op).

  • Community Compatibility: Help keeping your tank clean by scavenging leftover food and enjoy living in groups where they display lively, social behavior.

Account for Corydoras’ social and feeding needs

Corydoras are bottom-dwelling, social fish. Aquarium Co-Op recommends keeping three to six Corydoras of the same species and offering a variety of sinking foods so they get enough to eat. They are not a cleanup service and should not be expected to live on leftovers. Include their group and feeding needs in the stocking plan rather than adding a single fish and assuming it will thrive (Aquarium Co-Op).

Match temperature and water conditions for both species

Betta care sources give different temperature ranges: Fluval lists 76–82°F (25–27°C), while PetMD lists 76–81°F. These are betta-specific recommendations, not a universal range for Corydoras or all catfish. Confirm the requirements of the exact Corydoras species and choose a temperature suitable for both before buying fish (Fluval; PetMD).

PetMD’s betta care sheet, written by veterinarian Maria Zayas and reviewed by PetMD Editorial, was updated April 27, 2026. It recommends a fully cycled aquarium, a heater and thermometer, gentle or adjustable filter flow, conditioned tap water, and weekly testing of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. It gives bettas a pH target around 7, with a tolerance range around 6.5–7.8. These are betta-care recommendations; check the selected Corydoras’ needs as well (PetMD).

How to introduce Corydoras and monitor the pairing

  1. Identify the exact species. Confirm its adult size, social group requirements, diet, and water conditions rather than relying on the general label “catfish.”
  2. Check the whole aquarium plan. Make sure there is room for the betta and an appropriate group of Corydoras, with cover and a layout that suits the inhabitants. A tank-mate recommendation does not override space or care requirements.
  3. Prepare stable water first. Cycle the aquarium, use conditioned water, provide gentle-flow filtration, and check water quality and temperature. PetMD recommends weekly testing of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH for betta care (PetMD).
  4. Feed the Corydoras deliberately. Offer varied sinking foods; do not count on scraps reaching the bottom (Aquarium Co-Op).
  5. Watch behavior and be ready to separate them. Repeated chasing or attacks, damaged fins, hiding, abnormal activity, or loss of appetite are reasons to intervene. Check water quality and temperature if a fish seems unwell, and separate incompatible fish; Fluval advises isolation if the betta–tank mate combination does not work (Fluval; PetMD).

When should you choose another plan?

Do not add Corydoras if you cannot provide for an appropriate group, meet both species’ water requirements, or separate the fish if aggression develops. If the aquarium’s capacity or the chosen species’ care needs are uncertain, resolve those questions before purchase. A peaceful reputation or a list of possible tank mates cannot predict how one betta will behave.
