In Levi’s case, veterinarian Dr. Paola Cuevas interprets the behavior as most consistent with guarding a valued toy. The safest first move is to prevent other dogs from reaching his ball, then practice a calm trade in a controlled setting.
Why can’t Levi just pick another ball?
When Levi has a ball and another dog approaches it, he may be guarding that particular valued object rather than weighing whether another ball is available. If his response makes the other dog back away while he keeps the ball, the behavior has achieved its immediate purpose. From the human perspective, another ball seems like an easy substitute; in the moment, Levi may be focused on keeping the one he has.

How to prevent another ball-related incident
Stop using dog parks with loose balls
For now, avoid dog parks where tennis balls are available and other dogs can approach Levi while he has one. Management matters because each encounter can give him another opportunity to guard the ball.

Make ball play controlled and separate
Arrange ball play where another dog cannot reach Levi’s ball. Give Levi and Ruby separate opportunities to play, and remove high-value toys when you cannot actively supervise them together. Rough play at home does not, by itself, establish that the dogs have a problem; the relevant precaution is preventing competition around valued toys.

Reward Levi immediately when he releases the toy.

Increase the toy’s value gradually only while he understands the exercise and stays relaxed. If he becomes tense or defensive, the exercise is too difficult at that stage; return to an easier toy and setting.

Dr. Cuevas cautions that these confrontational responses may increase arousal and worsen guarding. Prioritize preventing access by other dogs and practice trades with an easier toy instead.
When to seek professional help
