Good dog grooming is a routine tailored to the individual dog—not a fixed schedule or a single set of tools. Coat type, time outdoors, activity, skin health, comfort, and your own experience all matter. Home care helps maintain a coat and catch changes between appointments; a professional groomer or veterinarian should handle tasks that are difficult, stressful, or medically concerning.
How often should you groom your dog?
Set the routine around your dog’s coat and condition rather than following a universal calendar. The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers these examples: long-coated dogs or dogs that spend substantial time outdoors may need brushing three times a week to daily, while shorthaired dogs can often manage with weekly brushing. These are starting points, not prescriptions for every dog.

Check the skin and coat as you brush. Increase attention when your dog gets dirty, develops tangles, or has a coat that needs frequent maintenance; adjust if brushing or bathing irritates the skin. Ask your veterinarian or groomer for an individual routine if you are unsure.

There is no universally best brush. AKC identifies pin, bristle, and slicker brushes, rubber curry combs, and sturdy metal combs for different coat types and grooming jobs. The professional standard is to “Select the type of tool best suited for the intended purpose and coat type.”

| Need | Possible tool | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Detangling or working through a coat | Slicker brush, pin brush, or sturdy metal comb | Choose for coat length and texture; work gently and do not pull against resistance. |
| Smoothing a coat | Bristle brush or rubber curry comb | Match the tool to the coat rather than assuming it suits every dog. |
| Maintaining nails | Nail clippers or a grinder | Use only if you can control the tool safely and your dog tolerates it; seek help if uncertain. |
These are tool categories, not recommendations for a particular product or model. A veterinarian or groomer can help identify what suits your dog.
Brush gently and check for mats or changes
Use gentle strokes that reach down to the skin without scraping or tugging. Part longer hair as needed so you can inspect the coat underneath. Look for tangles, plant material, cuts, scrapes, mats, and other changes. Mats commonly develop behind the ears and under the legs, where friction and movement can cause hair to knot.
Do not forcefully cut out a tight mat at home: skin can be difficult to distinguish from tightly tangled hair. AKC’s professional standards call for groomers to assess mats, use basic dematting procedures, decide whether shaving is necessary, explain the downsides, and obtain written permission when shaving is needed to remove mats. For a difficult mat, ask a skilled groomer to assess it.

Bathe with dog-formulated shampoo and rinse well
When a bath is needed, use warm water and a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. Rinse thoroughly so shampoo residue does not irritate the skin. How often to bathe depends on coat, activity, and skin health; bathing too frequently can strip oils and leave the skin or coat dry.
Towel drying is a basic option. Use a dryer only when it is appropriate for your dog’s coat and the dog remains comfortable. Avoid bathing outdoors in cold weather.
Trim nails only if you can avoid the quick
The quick is the sensitive part inside the nail. Trim only the portion beyond it. On dark nails, AKC advises clipping only the hook-like part that turns down. If your dog resists, gradual handling and short sessions may help; do not force the process if the dog is distressed or you are unsure where to cut. A groomer or veterinarian can help. AKC identifies styptic powder as a response if you accidentally cut the quick.

Clean ears and eyes gently
Ears
Clean only the visible outer ear and never insert an object deep into the canal. The AKC National Core Professional Dog Grooming Educational Standards state: “Avoid plucking internal ear hair; gentle external cleaning is permittable.” Dry the ears after bathing or swimming. Marked redness, swelling, discharge, debris, or a strong odor calls for a veterinary check, not a grooming fix.
Eyes
Use a soft, damp cloth or cotton ball to gently wipe debris from the corners of the eyes. Avoid rubbing the eye, and use only products designed for dogs.
Make tooth brushing part of home care
Use a toothbrush and toothpaste made for dogs, introducing mouth handling gradually. AKC says daily brushing is ideal, while brushing several times a week is still helpful. Dental chews can supplement brushing, but they do not replace it.

Know when grooming should stop
Grooming can help you notice a wound, skin problem, or other change, but it does not diagnose or treat illness. Ask a veterinarian about injuries, wounds, unusual skin conditions, suspected ear infection, or other signs of illness. AKC advises owners not to express anal sacs unless a veterinarian has trained them.
Use a professional groomer when your dog needs skilled styling or dematting, or when nail or coat care is stressful or beyond your confidence. A professional salon should be able to explain its hygiene practices. AKC’s standards call for safe equipment and work areas, pet-friendly products, attention to eyes and ears, and sanitation; they also say grooming areas, tools, equipment, and cages should be disinfected after each dog, with cleaning solutions used and stored according to manufacturer instructions.
