Choose a food that is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then decide whether moisture, calorie density, preference, cost, convenience, or a health condition should shape the feeding routine. Wet food, kibble, or a measured mix can all be appropriate; ask your veterinarian about medical needs and calorie targets.
Start with nutritional adequacy, not texture
Look for a nutritional adequacy statement on the package showing that the food is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage. Puppies and adult dogs do not have identical nutritional needs. AAFCO-related statements may indicate that a food was formulated to meet nutrient profiles or evaluated through feeding trials; check the wording on the specific food rather than assuming that wet or dry form signals quality. See VCA Animal Hospitals’ guidance on choosing a pet diet and its overview of how to choose a high-quality food.

How wet and dry food differ in everyday use
| Factor | Wet food | Dry food |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture | Contains more water, which can help increase moisture intake as part of the feeding plan. | Contains less water; adding water is an option to discuss with your veterinary team. |
| Calories and portions | Water makes it less calorie-dense by weight, so a dog may need a larger portion to get the same calories. | Typically more calorie-dense by weight, so measure portions carefully. |
| Handling and storage | Opened food needs refrigeration; handle leftovers promptly. | Easy to measure and store sealed after opening; works with many automatic and interactive feeders. |
| Cost | VCA describes canned food as more expensive per calorie than kibble; compare the cost to feed your dog, not only the package price. | Often costs less per calorie than canned food, according to VCA. |
| Texture and preference | Offers varied textures, and some dogs prefer it. A dog’s preferences may reflect what it ate when young. | Some dogs prefer kibble; individual preferences vary. |
These practical differences are described in VCA’s comparison of dry, canned, and semi-moist dog food, last updated March 20, 2024.

Wet food can be useful when adding moisture is desirable, including for some dogs with urinary or kidney conditions. That does not mean canned food treats those conditions or is the right choice for every affected dog. Ask your veterinarian whether canned food, water added to kibble, or a therapeutic diet fits your dog’s overall care plan. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s 2025 Principles of Wellness states: “Always provide access to clean and fresh water.”

Wet food may also suit a dog that strongly prefers its texture. If aroma seems to affect appetite, VCA notes that some canned foods can be gently warmed. Do not use preference alone to replace a prescribed diet without first speaking to the veterinary team.
When kibble may make sense—and what it does not do
Dry food is often simpler for measured portions, many feeders, and some feeding routines that allow a dog to graze. Keep it sealed after opening and buy an amount that can be used while fresh. If your dog eats too much when food is left out, use measured meals rather than relying on free access.

Ordinary kibble should not be treated as dental care. Dry food alone does not reliably improve oral health or prevent periodontal disease. VCA distinguishes ordinary food from specially designed dental diets, for which plaque or tartar evidence may be reviewed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). A dental diet is a specialized option, not a benefit of all kibble. See VCA’s explanation of nutrition and periodontal disease, last updated March 7, 2025.
How to choose for your dog
- Check the life-stage statement. Choose a complete-and-balanced food appropriate for your dog’s age and life stage.
- Factor in medical needs. For kidney or urinary disease, weight management, persistent digestive symptoms, or a prescription diet, ask your veterinarian which food and feeding plan to use.
- Match the routine. Consider whether you need easy portioning or feeder compatibility, or whether a dog’s texture preference makes wet food more practical.
- Compare feeding cost and calories. Check the calories and feeding guidance for each food; a lower shelf price does not necessarily mean a lower cost per day.
- Transition gradually. Introduce a new food or texture slowly, and watch appetite, bowel movements, and body weight.
- Measure a mix accurately. If feeding wet and dry together, count calories from both foods and confirm appropriate portions with your veterinary team.
For a dog that refuses a prescribed food, get guidance rather than making repeated abrupt swaps; Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine explains what to consider when a dog refuses prescription food. For broader diet decisions, Cornell also offers guidance on re-evaluating a dog’s diet.

What to monitor after choosing
Use your dog’s response—not the food’s format—as a practical check. Keep track of appetite, body weight, and bowel movements, and discuss changes or concerns with your veterinarian. Feeding guidance on a package is a starting point; calorie amounts and medical needs are individual.
