You can begin with a few household-compatible supplies, keep the searches easy, and add a class or competition only if you want more coaching or structure.
What is nose work for dogs?
Nose work, also called scent work, asks a dog to search for a particular odor and communicate when it has found it. The handler rewards the dog at the odor source. It is an activity built around the dog’s own sniffing rather than a test of speed or obedience.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes its sport as modeled on detection work. Its introductory material includes container, interior, exterior, and buried searches, along with odor-search and handler-discrimination divisions. These are features of AKC’s program, not requirements for a casual game at home. AKC Scent Work
The National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW) describes scent work as a dog-centered activity as well as a competitive sport, with separate trial and education programs. Its K9 Nose Work approach is designed to be accessible across training histories and skill levels. AKC and NACSW offer distinct programs, so their competition rules should not be treated as interchangeable. NACSW’s mission and organization

Why try scent work with your dog?
A search gives a dog a structured sniffing task and a chance to work through a small problem alongside you. AKC characterizes scent work as engaging and confidence-building; those are the organization’s descriptions, not guaranteed outcomes for every dog. No controlled comparative benefit study is established by the sources cited here, so scent work should be seen as one enrichment option rather than a proven replacement for other activities.
AKC also describes the activity as low impact and potentially suitable for senior dogs or dogs with mobility issues. That is general guidance, not a medical recommendation: adapt the search to your dog’s comfort and ask your veterinarian about activity limits if your dog has a health condition.

What supplies do you need for dog nose work?
You do not need a proprietary kit to try a beginner search. AKC’s home exercise uses birch essential oil, cotton swabs, tweezers, a small glass jar with a lid, a scent vessel such as a cleaned mint tin with holes in its lid, disposable gloves, high-value treats, and a lidded plastic container with holes. Some items may already be at home. AKC’s home scent-work exercise

- Prepare the odor away from the search area. Put birch oil on cotton swabs using gloves and tweezers, then keep the prepared swabs in a closed glass jar. This helps keep odor handling separate from the place where the dog will search.
- Introduce the scent vessel. Use tweezers to place a scented swab in a perforated vessel. Let your dog investigate; reward at the vessel when the dog shows interest in the odor.
- Vary your presentation. Change which hand holds the vessel so your dog learns to follow the odor rather than anticipating one particular hand.
- Add a simple container search. Once your dog identifies the odor consistently, place the vessel in a box. Start with the box held for the dog to investigate, then put it on the floor.
- Try an easy hide. Hide the vessel in an accessible spot in another room. Let the dog search and reward at the odor source when it is found.
This is AKC’s published beginner progression, not individualized instruction. If your dog is confused, make the search easier rather than repeating a difficult setup. Read AKC’s complete beginner exercise
How do you handle odor safely and make searches harder?
Keep the odor clean and separate
- Wear disposable gloves and use tweezers to handle scented swabs.
- Prepare target odor away from the search area so you do not unintentionally spread scent through the room.
- Dispose of used materials in a sealed bag away from the training area. AKC says a swab may be reused only if it has not been contaminated by drool, food, or soil.
Increase difficulty gradually
Wait until your dog can find hidden odor reliably in familiar, low-distraction places before adding distractions or more challenging hides. Buried, elevated, and obstructed hides are harder; they are not necessary for a first session.

For outdoor practice, AKC recommends choosing dog-friendly locations without interference from people or other dogs. Avoid off-leash dog parks, busy foot traffic, and playgrounds for hide placement, and get permission before using private property. Keep your dog securely crated and in sight while you set up a hide, use a leash and harness for practice, and retrieve every swab or container before leaving. If the search becomes difficult, return to an easier hide or a quiet familiar location. AKC guidance for scent work on walks

Competition is optional, and entry rules depend on the organization. NACSW’s published trial requirements say a dog must be at least one year old, earn the Odor Recognition Test (ORT) title, and meet membership and dog-registration requirements; additional location rules may apply. NACSW reports that training to trial readiness averages about a year, while noting that an ORT verifies odor recognition and is not itself a measure of trial readiness. These conditions apply to NACSW trials, not casual play or AKC competition. Check NACSW’s current trial requirements and eligibility before planning to enter.
Which nose-work route should you choose?
| What you want | A practical route |
|---|---|
| Casual enrichment | Start with simple home searches and increase difficulty only when your dog is finding the odor consistently. |
| Coaching | Look for a local scent-work class or club if you want help with odor handling, search setup, or interpreting your dog’s signals. |
| Competition | Choose an organization, then follow its own current odor progression, search format, and eligibility rules. |
A home game is a valid place to start; a class can provide feedback if you want it. Competition is a separate choice, with organization-specific preparation and entry requirements.
