Can a Hairball Kill a Cat? Warning Signs and What to Do

A lodged hairball can cause a life-threatening blockage. Know which symptoms need prompt veterinary care and how regular grooming may reduce swallowed fur.

Yes. A hairball can be fatal if it lodges in a cat’s digestive tract and causes a severe obstruction. This complication is uncommon, but it needs prompt veterinary care. Repeated retching or vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, no bowel movements, or trouble keeping food or water down are reasons to contact a veterinarian without delay.

How a hairball can become dangerous

Cats swallow loose fur as they groom. Because hair is indigestible, it can collect into a compact mass called a trichobezoar. Many cats bring up hairballs, but a mass can also remain in the stomach or lodge in the gastrointestinal tract, where it may irritate or obstruct the passage of food. Long-haired cats are at greater risk, according to Cornell’s Feline Health Center and VCA Animal Hospitals.

Cornell describes a hairball lodged in the small intestine as uncommon but very serious. Richard Goldstein, DVM, an associate professor of small animal medicine at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says: “This is uncommon,” he notes, “but it is very serious when it does occur. Without surgical intervention, it can be fatal.”

  • Repeated vomiting or unproductive retching
  • Lethargy or weakness
  • Refusing food or eating much less than usual
  • Abdominal pain
  • No bowel movements
  • Inability to keep food or water down

Vomiting more than once a week also warrants veterinary evaluation, as does vomiting accompanied by blood, decreased appetite, weakness, diarrhea, or changes in thirst or urination, according to Cornell’s guidance on vomiting. A blockage may not produce a visible hairball in vomit, so the absence of one does not rule it out.

Is your cat coughing or trying to cough up a hairball?

Coughing can look like crouching and hacking to bring up a hairball. If no hairball appears, or the episode happens again, do not assume it is a hairball. Respiratory illness, including asthma, is one possible cause of similar-looking episodes; gastrointestinal disease and other conditions can also cause vomiting or retching. Cornell advises veterinary assessment when vomiting is frequent or occurs with other concerning signs.

What to do if you suspect a blockage

Contact a veterinarian promptly and describe the symptoms, when they began, and whether your cat has passed stool or kept down food and water. Do not give a laxative or other home remedy unless a veterinarian directs you to do so. Cornell specifically warns against unsupervised laxatives and against relying on commercial diets marketed to prevent or relieve an obstruction. A suspected blockage needs professional assessment, not a trial of home treatment.

How veterinarians diagnose and treat a hairball obstruction

Evaluation may include a physical examination, blood tests, radiographs, and possibly ultrasound. The veterinarian uses the findings to determine whether a hairball or another problem is causing the symptoms. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes gastrointestinal obstruction as an emergency; treatment depends on the case.

  • For cats and kittens over 4 weeks

Some cases may be managed with supportive care or, when appropriate, laxatives under veterinary supervision. A mass that cannot pass may need removal by endoscopy or surgery. The options are not interchangeable home remedies: the right treatment depends on the obstruction’s location and severity and the cat’s condition.

How to reduce hairball risk

Brush or comb regularly

Regular brushing or combing removes loose fur before your cat can swallow it during grooming. Daily grooming is a practical starting point, especially for a long-haired cat; adjust the routine to what your cat tolerates.

Ask about diet, treats, or medication if episodes recur

Hairball-control foods and treats are available, but recurrent hairballs or vomiting deserve a discussion with your veterinarian. Frequent symptoms can point to an underlying skin or gastrointestinal problem, and a veterinarian can advise whether a specific food, treat, or medication is appropriate. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s cat-owner guidance recommends grooming and notes that formulated diets or treats may help; these measures are for prevention or management, not a substitute for urgent care when blockage is suspected.

How often is a hairball normal?

Cornell notes that expelling a hairball once every week or two can occur without lasting problems. That is not a reason to dismiss changes in your cat’s pattern: repeated vomiting, worsening episodes, or any warning sign above merits veterinary advice. Hairballs can also be mistaken for coughing or vomiting from another illness, so persistent episodes should not be self-diagnosed.
