What can keep my dog occupied?
Food-stuffable toys and puzzle feeders can give some dogs a way to work for food and engage with their surroundings. They are enrichment tools, not a substitute for walks, play, training, or interaction with you.

Choose for safe, manageable use
- Match the toy’s size to your dog so it is practical for them to use and less likely to be swallowed.
- Start with an easy puzzle or a lightly filled toy; increase difficulty only if your dog remains comfortable and engaged.
- Consider how easily the item can be cleaned, especially if it holds food.
- Supervise your dog’s first uses and stop if the item breaks or your dog tries to chew off and swallow pieces.
If your dog struggles when left alone, a puzzle toy is not a treatment for separation anxiety. Anxiety-related behavior can have medical causes, so discuss it with a veterinarian. A behavior plan may include training approaches such as gradual desensitization and counterconditioning. The AKC’s separation-anxiety guidance describes those approaches and the importance of assessing the problem.

Which grooming tools do I actually need?
Grooming needs depend on coat type, breed, lifestyle, and the task. A basic home kit may include a brush, nail clippers, a toothbrush, and toothpaste made for dogs, but not every dog needs the same tools or routine.

Match the tool to the job
- Brushing: Choose a brush suited to your dog’s coat rather than assuming one style works for all dogs.
- Nails: Use dog nail clippers and trim only as much as you can do safely. If trimming is stressful or you are unsure where to cut, ask a groomer or veterinarian for help.
- Teeth: Use a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste; do not substitute human toothpaste.
Introduce handling gradually and keep sessions comfortable. If grooming causes distress, or you are uncertain which tool fits your dog, ask a veterinarian or groomer for advice. The AKC overview of dog grooming supplies notes that tools and routines vary among dogs.
How do I choose a chew safely?
Chews can give dogs an appropriate outlet for chewing, but a product that suits one dog may be unsuitable for another. Match a chew toy or treat to your dog’s species, size, and chewing habits, follow its label directions, and supervise your dog while they chew.

What if my dog seems anxious or resists a product?
Start by observing your dog’s response rather than assuming a product will solve the behavior. If anxiety is persistent, severe, or new, ask a veterinarian to rule out health issues and discuss an appropriate behavior plan. Enrichment can be one part of support, but it does not cure anxiety.
Evidence for calming products also varies. The AKC’s article on diffusers summarizes a 2021 review that found evidence for dog-appeasing pheromones in managing anxiety-related stress behaviors in dogs over six months old remained weak; it should not be read as proof that a diffuser will work for an individual dog. Read the AKC’s discussion of calming diffusers.

How do I decide what to buy first?
Begin with the actual problem, then choose the least complicated product that supports the relevant care routine.
- Boredom or food-seeking: Try a size-appropriate food-stuffable toy or puzzle feeder, and supervise its first uses.
- Coat or nail maintenance: Select a dog-specific tool for the coat or task; ask a groomer or veterinarian if unsure.
- Chewing: Choose a chew matched to the dog’s size and chewing habits, follow the label, and supervise.
- Seasonal paw exposure: Rinse paws after contact with winter chemicals; consider boots only if conditions and your dog’s tolerance make them useful. In warm weather, avoid hot pavement and walk at cooler times.
Responsible care remains broader than any purchase: it includes appropriate food and water, exercise, training, social interaction, veterinary care, and protection from hazards. The ASPCA’s responsible-pet-care guidance outlines those basics.
