Most Elspet smart litter-box problems come from one of five causes: an obstruction in the rake path, an incorrectly seated drawer or pedal, dirty or covered sensors, unsuitable or excessive litter, or a delayed automatic-cleaning setting. Start by identifying your exact model—such as MSP01, Spaceship, or Spaceship 2—because parts, button layouts, manuals, and disassembly procedures are not universally interchangeable.
Before inspecting anything, keep your cat away, stop any active cycle, unplug the unit, and never reach into a moving rake or door mechanism. The steps below apply to the original ELS PET smart self-cleaning litter-box family. They should not automatically be applied to the newer Orbitie line.

First, identify the model and make the machine safe
ELS PET and Elspet documentation covers more than one smart litter-box design. Check the label on the base or rear of the machine, compare its shape with the manual, and confirm the model before buying a rake, basin, liner, sensor, or other part. The MSP01, Spaceship, and Spaceship 2 may use different components even when the symptom sounds identical.
- Move your cat to a separate room.
- Stop an active cleaning cycle if possible.
- Unplug the litter box before removing the drawer, rake, basin, or door components.
- Do not force a jammed rake, bend the mechanism, lubricate it, or bypass a safety sensor.
- Take a photo of the model label and the fault indicator before dismantling anything.
Elspet describes laser and infrared presence detection and automatic stopping when a cat enters the machine. Those safeguards do not make it safe to inspect a powered appliance while a rake or door is moving.

Quick diagnosis by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely checks |
|---|---|
| Rake stops or jams | Clumped litter, feces, a twisted waste bag, excess litter, stuck residue, side sensors, or rake attachment |
| No cleaning cycle after use | Cleaning delay, presence sensor, drawer or pedal seating, obstruction, or safety alert |
| Door stays open or looks misaligned | Normal standby behavior, pressure switch, rake home position, or door alignment |
| Red light, beeping, or no power | Adapter, power connection, pedal, drawer, or possible electrical fault |
| Cat is not detected | Dirty or covered sensors, waste-bag placement, or a cat below the reliable detection range |
| App will not connect | 5 GHz Wi-Fi, phone on a different network, pairing mode, router distance, or network-name compatibility |
1. Fix a rake that is blocked or stops halfway
Remove obvious obstructions
With the unit unplugged, remove the waste drawer and inspect the entire rake path. Look for:
- Hard clumps or feces caught in front of or behind the rake
- Litter stuck to the bottom of the basin
- A waste-drawer bag twisted upward into the mechanism
- Loose debris around the side rails
- Too much litter in the basin
Remove stuck waste rather than trying to push it through the mechanism. Check that the rake is firmly attached and that the drawer and basin are sitting squarely. If the litter is above the indicated operating level, reduce it before testing again. Too much litter can overload the rake; too little can produce weak clumps that smear onto the basin.
Reset the machine
After clearing the obstruction, reconnect the machine and hold the third button from the left for approximately 10 seconds to reset it, following the button arrangement on your model. Elspet recommends the same long-press reset when the rake is fixed and will not move. Start a cleaning cycle only after confirming that the path is clear and the cat is away from the unit.
Clean the side sensors
Dust or litter on the two internal side sensors can make the box stop or report a false obstruction. Unplug the machine, then gently wipe the sensing areas with a soft, slightly damp cloth or paper towel. Do not flood the sensor openings or spray cleaner directly into them.
Isolate a tray or drive problem
A full or badly installed bag can interfere with the sensors and rake. Temporarily remove the rear waste drawer and its bag, reconnect the machine, and test whether the rake operates normally.
If the fault remains, Elspet’s troubleshooting sequence uses another isolation test: remove the pedal and litter basin, reinstall the pedal without the basin, and test the mechanism. This can help distinguish a drive or control problem from a tray, basin, or alignment problem. Stop if the mechanism makes abnormal electrical or mechanical noise. Do not force it or attempt an improvised repair.
When a replacement rake is appropriate
If the rake is visibly damaged, repeatedly slips after the path is clear, or has a confirmed mechanical failure, verify the model before ordering a ELS PET Spaceship replacement rake. The Spaceship name alone may not establish compatibility with Spaceship 2 or another ELS PET model, and live marketplace stock is not guaranteed.
2. The box does not clean automatically after your cat leaves
Check the cleaning delay first
Automatic cleaning is intentionally delayed so urine or feces can form a scoopable clump. The app’s cleaning-delay or clumping-time setting controls this wait. For example, a 10-minute setting means the cycle generally does not begin until about 10 minutes after the cat leaves.
Elspet recommends setting clumping time above five minutes to reduce sticking. If you are testing the machine, wait through the full configured delay before assuming automatic cleaning has failed.
If the delay has passed, check these items
- Confirm that the cat actually triggered the presence sensors.
- Make sure the pedal and waste drawer are fully seated.
- Check that the waste bag is not covering a sensor.
- Look for an obstruction, rake fault, tray problem, or door-safety condition.
- Clean the internal sensing areas with the machine unplugged.
- Check that the litter is within the indicated level and is capable of forming a firm clump.
A box that thinks a cat is still inside may intentionally refuse to clean. That is preferable to a cycle starting while the cat is present, so do not disable or bypass the detection system.
3. The door will not close or is out of position
The door may remain open while the machine is in standby and close as part of a cleaning cycle. If it needs to return to its normal position, Elspet instructs owners to hold the pressure switch at the top of the door while allowing the rake to rotate back to its original position, then release the switch.
The pressure switch is described as a metal contact or white button inside the upper-left portion of the door frame. Keep fingers clear of the moving mechanism. Do not push, twist, or force the door into alignment.
If necessary, a manual cleaning cycle can be initiated with the first button on the applicable unit. Button layouts vary, so use the model’s manual if the controls differ.
A door that remains misaligned, fails to respond to the pressure switch, or repeatedly reports a door fault may have a defective door switch or door motor. Those are repair topics identified in Elspet support materials; they are not good candidates for trial-and-error disassembly while the appliance is connected to power.
4. Red light, beeping, or an apparently dead unit
Check the basic installation
- Use the supplied adapter, or an exact replacement that matches the model’s voltage, current, polarity, and connector requirements.
- Push the power connection firmly into place.
- Confirm that the pedal and waste drawer are installed correctly.
- Look for a twisted bag, tray obstruction, or loose component.
- Inspect the cord and adapter for damage before reconnecting power.
Do not substitute a random “more powerful” adapter. Elspet mentions a more powerful compatible adapter only as part of diagnosing inadequate power; compatibility must be confirmed by the exact electrical specifications for your model.

At that point, repeated resets are unlikely to solve the underlying problem.
Basic setup sequence
For the setup procedure described by Elspet, install the pedal while power is connected, remove the bottom drawer before use, press the side buckles until the magnetic strip engages, and press the power button. To activate the ring light, hold the LED-light button for 10 seconds. The exact labels and indicator behavior can vary by model.
5. False sensor alerts or failure to detect your cat
Sensor problems can prevent a cleaning cycle, stop a cycle partway through, or make the machine behave as though a cat is still inside. ELS PET describes laser and infrared sensing as part of its cat-detection system.
- Unplug the litter box.
- Inspect the internal side sensing areas.
- Remove litter granules, dust, waste, and any part of the bag covering the sensors.
- Wipe the areas gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Let surfaces dry before reconnecting and testing.
Do not pour water into the appliance or use a sharp object to clean a sensor opening. If the sensor continues to misread after cleaning and correct reassembly, it may need professional diagnosis or a model-specific infrared-sensing-module replacement.

Small animals may not reliably trigger the infrared sensor. Elspet says kittens under approximately one month old or below 2.3 lb may require manual cleanup. Its published guidance also says cats weighing 3.3 lb or less should not use automatic mode without supervision and recommends at least 5 lb for automatic mode.
Another reproduced manual gives a less strict threshold of more than 1.5 kg, or approximately 3.3 lb. Because the documentation conflicts, use the safer approach: supervise small cats and kittens, and keep the box in manual or powered-off operation until the cat reliably triggers the sensors. Never rely on the machine to detect a very small kitten unattended.
6. Wi-Fi or app pairing problems
The original ELS PET smart litter-box instructions specify a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; 5 GHz is not supported. Follow this pairing sequence:

- Move the litter box near the router for setup.
- Connect your phone to the same 2.4 GHz network.
- Open the Elspet app and register or sign in.
- Choose Add a device.
- Select the self-cleaning litter-box option.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Press and hold the first and second device buttons until the machine beeps and the indicator flashes.
- Wait approximately one minute for pairing to complete.
If pairing does not finish, disconnect and reconnect the litter box’s power, then retry the process. Keep the phone and box on the same 2.4 GHz network during setup.
A reproduced manual says some model or firmware combinations may have difficulty with Wi-Fi names containing spaces, Chinese characters, or special characters. Treat that as a model-dependent diagnostic rather than a universal requirement. Do not rename a network unnecessarily if the exact model’s current instructions do not call for it.
Wi-Fi loss does not necessarily stop the physical litter box. Elspet says the unit continues using its default automatic-cleaning mode while remote monitoring and app control are unavailable, then reconnects when Wi-Fi returns. You will temporarily lose app-based control and status information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Choose litter that the rake can handle
Elspet’s troubleshooting guidance recommends mixed litter, including plant-based or bentonite litter, with granules shorter than 5 mm. A reproduced manual gives a different limit for tofu litter, saying not to use tofu pellets longer than 7 mm. Since those documents conflict and models may differ, follow the current manual supplied with your exact unit and avoid oversized pellets. When in doubt, the more conservative under-5-mm guidance is the safer general choice.
For owners replacing unsuitable litter, small-granule clumping cat litter is the relevant category to compare. Check the pellet size, clumping behavior, dust level, and the model’s manual rather than assuming any litter advertised for an automatic box will work in every ELS PET machine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExcess litter can overload or stall the rake. Too little litter can produce poor clumps that adhere to the basin. If the app displays a litter-level reading, its indicator and reset behavior may differ by model; follow the exact instructions for your device after adding litter.
8. Clean the machine without damaging it
Routine cleaning prevents residue from hardening and interfering with the rake, sensors, drawer, and basin. The official procedure removes components in stages, including the rear waste drawer, inner door, rake, pedal and drawer assembly, sponge strip, and litter basin.
Practical maintenance checklist
- Remove stuck clumps before they harden.
- Keep both internal sensor areas free of dust and litter.
- Inspect the rake attachment and side rails.
- Check that the waste bag is not folded over a sensor or into the rake path.
- Confirm that the drawer, pedal, basin, and magnetic strip are seated correctly.
- Replace a full bag before it interferes with the mechanism.
- Wipe the basin and removable parts, then dry them completely before reassembly.
Wipe the appliance rather than rinsing the complete machine with water. The electronics and motor housing should not be treated as waterproof. Never test the machine while moisture remains around electrical connections or moving components.
Elspet support materials also cover cleaning and replacement of the infrared-sensing module, motherboard, door switch, door motor, ambient-light component, and UV lamp. UV operation should not be described as medical-grade disinfection: the available materials describe the feature and safety interruption but do not establish a clinical sanitation claim.

Replacement parts are model-specific. Elspet’s parts catalog includes liners, litter-tray liners, rakes, rake racks, pedal grids, deodorant covers, basin-related accessories, and other components for Spaceship, Spaceship 2, and related units. Verify the model label, part shape, connector, and current stock before ordering.
For the waste drawer, compare ELSPET automatic litter box liners only after confirming the liner dimensions and attachment method for your machine. A bag that is too large, folded incorrectly, or covering a sensor can create a fault that looks like a motor or sensor failure. Some accessory listings may ship from a warehouse with a stated transportation period of 20–30 working days, so check current delivery information before relying on a replacement.
Marketplace listings can change, and the appearance of an ELS PET product on Amazon does not prove that every exact part is currently available or sold by an authorized seller. Check the model compatibility and seller information before purchasing.
10. When to stop troubleshooting and contact Elspet
Stop using the machine and seek professional help or contact Elspet when:
Recommended Free Tools
- The rake repeatedly stalls after all obstructions have been removed and the unit has been reset.
- The machine continues to show a red alarm or beep after correct installation and power checks.
- The cord, plug, or adapter is damaged.
- You smell hot electrical insulation or see smoke, melting, sparks, or exposed wiring.
- The door, rake, or other moving part exposes a hazard.
- A motherboard, motor, sensor module, or door switch appears to have failed.
- The machine requires forced disassembly, a bypass, or an electrical repair you cannot verify safely.
Record the model, symptoms, indicator behavior, app error, recent cleaning or litter change, and the steps already attempted. Photos or a short video of a safe, unplugged condition can help support identify the correct part. Do not order a generic motor, adapter, rake, or sensor solely because it looks similar.
Recommended troubleshooting order
- Identify the exact model.
- Remove the cat and unplug the machine.
- Clear the rake path and inspect the bag, drawer, basin, and pedal.
- Clean the internal sensors.
- Check litter quantity and granule size.
- Reconnect and perform the applicable long-press reset.
- Wait through the configured cleaning delay.
- Test Wi-Fi separately on a 2.4 GHz network if the physical machine works but the app does not.
- Escalate rather than forcing a component when the fault returns.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Elspet litter box not cleaning right away?
Automatic cleaning waits for the configured cleaning-delay or clumping-time period after the cat leaves. A 10-minute setting normally means the cycle begins after about 10 minutes. If the delay has passed, check the presence sensors, drawer, pedal, waste bag, rake path, and safety indicators.
What should I do when the Elspet rake is stuck?
Unplug the unit, remove the drawer, clear clumped litter, feces, residue, debris, and any twisted bag from the rake path, then check the rake attachment and side sensors. Reconnect the machine and hold the third button from the left for about 10 seconds to reset it. Do not force or lubricate the mechanism.
Can a kitten use an Elspet automatic litter box?
Small kittens may not reliably trigger the infrared sensor. Elspet advises manual cleanup for kittens under approximately one month old or below 2.3 lb, warns against unsupervised automatic use at 3.3 lb or less, and recommends automatic operation at 5 lb or more. Because the manuals are inconsistent, use the stricter guidance and supervise small cats.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the Elspet litter box work without Wi-Fi?
According to Elspet’s FAQ guidance, the physical box continues in its default automatic-cleaning mode when Wi-Fi is unavailable, but app control and remote monitoring are unavailable until the connection returns.
What Wi-Fi does an Elspet smart litter box need?
The documented setup requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network; 5 GHz is not supported. Connect the phone and litter box to the same 2.4 GHz network, use Add a device in the Elspet app, and hold the first and second device buttons until the unit beeps and the indicator flashes.
Can I wash the entire Elspet litter box with water?
No. Wipe the appliance and clean removable components according to the model’s instructions. Do not treat the electronics or motor housing as waterproof, and dry every cleaned component completely before reassembly and testing.
The Bottom Line
Clear the machine safely, clean the sensors, verify the drawer, pedal, bag, basin, litter level, and cleaning delay, then reset the unit before considering a replacement part. Use the exact model label for every part and adapter decision. Persistent jams, red alarms, electrical smells, damaged wiring, or suspected motor, motherboard, sensor, or door-switch failures require Elspet support or qualified repair—not a forced mechanism or bypassed safety system.
