10 fascinating facts about bison
1. Bison are North America’s largest land animals
An adult American bison can stand more than 6 feet tall at the shoulder hump, and large individuals may weigh more than a ton. Bulls are generally larger than cows, while age, subspecies, health, and seasonal condition also affect size.

That makes the bison North America’s largest terrestrial animal. Its bulk is especially impressive because the animal is not simply a heavy grazer: it can sprint, turn quickly, and move over rough ground with surprising agility.

2. The hump is concentrated over the front shoulders
The bison’s most recognizable feature is its large hump. Rather than being evenly distributed across the back, the animal’s powerful anatomy is concentrated toward the front of the body, over the shoulders and neck.
A bison also has a massive head, short curved horns, a beard, and long, coarse hair around the head, neck, forelegs, and front of the body. The rear of the body has shorter hair, giving the animal its distinctive front-heavy silhouette.
3. Its shaggy coat helps it survive harsh winters
Bison grow a particularly heavy winter coat, with especially dense insulation around the head and front of the body. Their shaggy heads are well suited to facing into strong winds and blizzards while the animals continue searching for food.

They may roll against the ground to loosen the old hair, leaving visible clumps of fur behind. This seasonal shedding is one reason bison can look ragged or patchy during spring.
4. Bison can run about 30 miles per hour
Their enormous size can make them appear calm and slow, but American bison can reach approximately 30 miles per hour. They are also capable of abrupt turns and quick changes of direction.
This combination of speed, weight, horns, and unpredictability makes even a seemingly relaxed bison dangerous to approach. A bison that is accustomed to seeing people is still a wild animal—not a domesticated cow or a safe photo prop.
5. They use their heads like snowplows
Bison primarily graze on grasses, although they may also eat flowering plants, lichens, and woody leaves. They feed throughout the year, including during winter when snow covers much of the vegetation.

To reach buried forage, a bison sweeps its head from side to side, pushing snow away with its muzzle and forehead. After feeding, it ruminates—bringing partially digested food back up to chew again. Bison also need access to water every day.
6. Wallowing helps bison deal with heat and insects
A wallowing bison rolls in dust or mud, sometimes creating a shallow depression in the ground. Wallowing helps the animal cool down and can soothe irritation from biting insects.
The depressions may remain visible in grasslands after the bison has moved on. These features are a familiar sign of bison activity, although their wider effects on habitat vary with local conditions and should not be treated as identical in every ecosystem.
7. Newborn calves have reddish-yellow coats
A female bison usually gives birth to one calf after a gestation of about 285 days. Newborn calves have a distinctive yellow-red or reddish-yellow coat rather than the dark brown appearance of many adults.
The young bison can generally keep up with the herd after only a few days. It nurses for roughly seven to eight months while gradually learning to graze and navigate the herd’s environment.
8. Bison communicate with grunts, snorts, and bellows
Bison are not silent animals. They use several vocal signals, including grunts, snorts, and hoarse bellows. Grunts can help individuals maintain contact, while snorts may warn of an intruder or possible threat.
During displays or conflicts, bulls may lower their heads, paw the ground, bellow, butt heads, or charge. These behaviors are reminders that horns and vocalizations are part of real social communication—not entertaining performances for visitors.

9. “Buffalo” is common, but “bison” is more accurate
In American English, “buffalo” is a widespread traditional name for the American bison. The name became established through historical naming practices and remains deeply familiar in places such as Buffalo, New York, and Yellowstone National Park.
Zoologically, however, American bison are not true buffalo. Water buffalo are native to Asia, and Cape buffalo are native to Africa. Using American bison or North American bison avoids confusing these distinct bovids.
10. Bison survived a near-extinction crisis
Before the 1800s, estimates suggest that tens of millions of bison lived across North America, although historical estimates vary considerably. By the late nineteenth century, uncontrolled commercial hunting and other pressures had reduced the population to only a few hundred to fewer than 1,000 animals, depending on the estimate and date.
One USDA account describes a decline from approximately 60 million bison to slightly more than 300 in 1893. The Smithsonian gives an estimate of fewer than 1,000 by the 1890s. These figures differ, but they tell the same story: the species came extraordinarily close to disappearing.
Ranchers, zoos, public agencies, Tribes, and conservation organizations helped prevent extinction. Yellowstone’s bison population reached just 23 animals in 1902 before recovering through sustained protection and management.

They help shape grassland ecosystems
The National Park Service describes bison as ecosystem engineers because their grazing and movement influence the places where they live. Grazing can create a varied pattern of vegetation, while wallowing leaves distinctive soil depressions. Long-term studies in Yellowstone examine how bison affect forage use, soils, plant productivity, and nutrient cycling.
These effects are not identical in every grassland. Population density, climate, available forage, soil, and other grazers all matter. Still, bison are far more than large animals that happen to eat grass: their daily behavior helps shape prairie habitats.

They have deep Indigenous cultural importance
Bison were integral to the economic, material, and spiritual lives of many Indigenous peoples. Meat provided food, while hides and other parts supported clothing, shelter, tools, and other necessities. The animal also holds enduring cultural and ceremonial importance for many Tribes.
Contemporary bison management can involve Tribal harvests and food-transfer efforts that support Tribal food sovereignty and access to meat and hides. Conservation is therefore not only a question of animal numbers; it also involves relationships, cultural responsibilities, access, and decision-making.
Bison became the United States’ national mammal in 2016
The National Bison Legacy Act, approved on May 9, 2016, designated the North American bison as the national mammal of the United States. The designation recognizes the animal’s ecological, historical, and cultural significance.
It was a symbolic designation, however. The law did not itself create special federal legal protection for every bison or replace existing wildlife-management policies.
How many bison are there now?
The answer depends on which animals are counted. Smithsonian estimates commonly distinguish roughly 500,000 commercial bison from approximately 30,000 animals in conservation herds. Commercial livestock are not counted in the same way as free-ranging wildlife when conservation status is assessed.
That means it is misleading to treat the entire figure as a single, fully wild population. Modern conservation concerns include protecting suitable habitat, preventing fragmentation, maintaining genetic diversity, and managing hybridization in some managed herds. The American bison should not simply be labeled “endangered” without specifying the population, assessment, and definition being discussed.

Yellowstone National Park is home to one of North America’s best-known wild bison populations, but its numbers do not represent the total continental population. Yellowstone’s 2024 Bison Management Plan established a flexible target range of approximately 3,500 to 6,000 wild, migratory bison.

The National Park Service reported a pre-calving estimate of nearly 5,300 bison in 2025 and more than 5,200 entering winter 2025–2026. These are Yellowstone-specific estimates, not a count of all American bison.
Management is complicated because Yellowstone bison migrate beyond park boundaries. Once they leave the park, different agencies, states, landowners, and Tribal entities may have different authorities and concerns. Limited winter range, possible livestock interactions, and the needs of migratory wildlife all contribute to the challenge. The Interagency Bison Management Plan coordinates these interests.
How to watch bison safely
If you see bison in a national park or open landscape, stay at least 25 yards away from bison and other large animals. Watch from inside a vehicle when possible, and use binoculars for wildlife viewing rather than walking closer.
- Never approach a bison for a selfie or attempt to touch, feed, or drive it.
- Do not assume a bison is calm because it is grazing or standing still.
- Give the animal room to move, especially near calves, roads, trails, and mating animals.
- Keep dogs leashed where regulations require it and prevent them from provoking wildlife.
- For photography, use distance and a telephoto lens instead of moving toward the animal. A lens with useful reach can help you follow park rules, but no camera equipment replaces the 25-yard minimum.
Respecting distance protects both people and bison. It also gives the animals the space they need to behave naturally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are bison and buffalo the same animal?
No. American bison are native to North America, while true buffalo—such as water buffalo and Cape buffalo—are native to Asia and Africa. “Buffalo” is a common traditional name for American bison in the United States, but “American bison” is the more precise name.
Can bison really run faster than people?
American bison can reach about 30 miles per hour and can turn quickly. People should never attempt to outrun or approach one. In Yellowstone, visitors are instructed to remain at least 25 yards from bison.
Are American bison endangered?
The answer depends on the population being discussed. The species recovered from a near-extinction crisis, but conservation herds and commercial herds are counted differently. Current concerns include habitat fragmentation, genetic management, and hybridization in some managed populations.
What do bison eat in winter?
Bison primarily eat grasses year-round. In winter, they sweep snow aside with their heads to reach available forage. They may also eat flowering plants, lichens, and woody leaves, depending on what is available.
The Bottom Line
American bison combine enormous size with speed, specialized winter anatomy, complex social behavior, and a history that reaches from near-extinction to significant recovery. They remain ecologically important and culturally meaningful—but they are still powerful wild animals. The best way to appreciate one is from a respectful distance.
