Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Catnip

Catnip affects many cats through nepetalactone, usually for about 15 to 30 minutes. Here is how it works, how to offer it safely, when to call a vet, and why catnip essential oil is not a pet product.

Catnip affects many cats through a plant compound called nepetalactone. Some cats become playful and active, some turn mellow, and some show no interest at all. The effect is short, usually lasting about 15 to 30 minutes according to one veterinary source, and it is not harmless in large amounts. Here is what it does, how to offer it safely, and what it can and cannot do for your cat.

What catnip is

Catnip is Nepeta cataria, a perennial in the mint family. Its leaves and stems contain nepetalactone, the compound linked to the behavior changes cat owners see. The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences identifies nepetalactone in those parts of the plant as the chemical associated with feline responses (Texas A&M, “Feline Fine: The Benefits of Catnip” (2019)). The ASPCA’s poison-control entry names nepetalactone as the toxic principle in the plant (ASPCA Animal Poison Control, “Toxic and Non-toxic Plants: Catnip”).

What catnip does to cats

The response depends on how the cat encounters the plant. Texas A&M veterinarian Dr. Lori Teller, clinical associate professor at Texas A&M, says that smelling nepetalactone tends to stimulate activity, while eating it has a sedative effect. Cats may roll, dart around, flip over, or seem hyperactive, and others become calm. Teller’s words in the university’s 2019 article:

“Catnip has a psychoactive effect, meaning that it can make cats high for about 15-30 minutes after exposure.”

That 15 to 30 minute window is a general description from the source, not a guarantee for any individual cat. Teller also notes that some cats are not susceptible to catnip at all, so an owner who sees no reaction has not necessarily done something wrong.

Why some cats do not respond

Sensitivity to nepetalactone appears to be inherited rather than universal, and the sources used here do not establish how common non-response is across cats. What owners can observe is simple: offer the herb or a toy, watch the cat for a few minutes, and accept the result. Kittens under about six months are often reported as less responsive, but that claim is not established by the sources cited here, so do not rely on it.

Why frequent exposure may dull the effect

Teller says that frequent exposure might reduce the response. The sources do not give a precise interval between sessions or a tolerance timeline, so there is no reliable schedule to recommend. In practice, offering catnip occasionally, perhaps a few times a week instead of every day, is the more defensible approach, and it keeps the plant from becoming something the cat ignores.

How to offer catnip

Texas A&M describes two basic methods: buying toys that contain catnip, or buying loose herb and sprinkling it on places where the owner wants the cat to spend time, such as a scratching post. The herb can be fresh or dried, and individual cats may prefer one form over the other. The table below compares the common options using only what the sources state.

Using catnip to redirect chewing

Cornell’s Feline Health Center lists catnip and catmint among possible plant alternatives for cats that chew houseplants. The same guidance warns that a cat may keep snacking on houseplants and that some houseplants are dangerous. Catnip can serve as one diversion while you move or remove problem plants, but it does not make a toxic plant safe to leave within reach (Cornell Feline Health Center, “Feline Behavior Problems: Destructive Behavior”).

Safety: what to watch for

Catnip is not categorically harmless. Texas A&M says it is unlikely to cause an overdose, but too much can cause nausea and vomiting. Its advice is to remove catnip if this happens and to consult a veterinarian if you are concerned. The ASPCA classifies catnip as toxic to cats and lists vomiting, diarrhea, and either sedation or stimulation among the reported signs (ASPCA).

When to call for help

  • The cat has eaten a large amount of catnip, or a catnip product, and then vomits or has diarrhea.
  • The cat appears unusually sleepy, unsteady, or agitated for longer than the usual short window.
  • The cat has any symptom you cannot explain after contact with the plant.

In those cases, contact your veterinarian or a animal poison-control service, such as ASPCA Animal Poison Control, rather than waiting for the signs to pass.

Catnip essential oil is a different product

Do not treat catnip essential oil as interchangeable with dried herb. The ASPCA advises against applying essential oils directly to pets, because concentration and formulation vary and affect the level of risk. It also advises keeping oils out of reach of pets (ASPCA, “The Essentials of Essential Oils Around Pets”).

Growing catnip at home

Texas A&M states that cat owners can grow catnip themselves and describes the plant as relatively easy to care for and suited to much of North America. NC State Extension describes Nepeta cataria as a fast-growing, low-maintenance, deer-resistant perennial that suits cottage, sensory, herb, and children’s gardens (NC State Extension, “Nepeta cataria (Catmint, Catnip, Catswort)”).

These sources do not give sowing dates, soil requirements, watering schedules, or regional timing. Those details depend heavily on climate and local conditions, so check your regional cooperative extension office for planting instructions before you sow or transplant. Because the plant is a perennial, it may return in the same spot in following seasons in climates that suit it, but that is a general expectation rather than a schedule the sources provide.

A separate note: the insect-repellent laboratory study

Catnip oil has also been studied as an insect repellent, and that work is often confused with cat enrichment. A 2009 study by USDA Agricultural Research Service authors, published in Medical and Veterinary Entomology, reported that 20 mg of catnip essential oil produced average repellency of 96% against stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and 79% against houseflies (Musca domestica) in laboratory bioassays (USDA Agricultural Research Service authors, “Efficacy and safety of catnip (Nepeta cataria) as a novel filth fly repellent” (2009)). Those figures describe the tested oil, dose, and species under laboratory conditions. They do not show how the oil performs in homes or barns, and they do not establish that the oil is safe to apply to animals.

The same study reported moderate skin irritation in a rabbit test, which is one more reason not to apply catnip oil to a cat or other pet.
